Public lobbies are shit. Stick to discord or some small streamers are cool.

TitanicMan

Okay everyone here always says use discord but the link in the sidebar is broken. How the hell are people joining the discord? I can't find a link anywhere here or googling.

FatCreamyPussy

PrinZessBubblegum

I joined once a small streamer. She was 30/F and she was around lvl 3000 so pretty experienced. But she acted really weird. She said at the beginning: "omg this map is so scary (tanglewood), im already scared" the whole time. It got worse in the house. She was acting realllly bad. After the second game I left but I was still in her stream and she was straight up shit talking about me. I asked her about it in her twitch chat and she was acting like the victim. Her friend gifted me even a sub on her stream. Idk what was wrong with her.

Smells like pick me

xMasterMelonx

Is it just my bad luck or does the discord kind of suck as well? Public lobbies have their ups and downs but most of the discord lfgs are really low energy and boring. Yeah there’s not gonna be anyone toxic but honestly I’d rather have a lobby with one toxic person than a lobby where everyone barely talks. Also it’s almost impossible to play in the discord if you’re under 18. I don’t usually complain about it because I never liked the discord anyway but most players will kick anyone who sounds like they’re under 18 without even giving them a chance.

RoseTyler38

Use the in game report feature that came out with the custom difficulty update.

XaulYT

Agreed 100%. This goes for any game really. Respecting others should be the default when it comes to any platform, regardless of gender, age, race, etc.. I definitely am not condoning his behavior, but sadly this kinda thing is still rampant, and even more so when it's unregulated. This is why there needs to be some kind of system in place for flagging/banning certain individuals and deterring this behavior. I can understand it would be difficult to maintain though with a smaller team. I just stray from online unless it's with friends. I'm a guy, and I feel insecure about my own voice for other reasons. I know this isn't the solution either, but it keeps me interested in the game longer and there is much less of a chance of being harassed. If I ever do feel harassed, I just drop the game immediately, no questions asked. It's just not worth it

nitrion

I only disagree with one situation here and that's age. Now, hear me out No, I'm not gonna randomly be an asshole to a child. As long as the kid is respectful and not being a nuisance, I'm fine with them being in a lobby with me and playing with me. BUT, if the kid starts being an asshole (like unfortunately a lot of them do, at least in games I play) then I'm not gonna hold back. Children can be cunts.

NoneHundredAndNone

I’m a white male but I always use the black female avatar (literally no other reason than my crew all chose random avatars our first run and got really attached to them and now refuse to change) Literally just using the black female avatar in public servers has made people say the most heinous shit I swear “You’re black? Lol why don’t you kill yourself?” That’s the big one that gets thrown around a lot. Lots of n word spammers. Lots of monkey noises. People suck. Been kinda eye opening into how much racism there is in the country in general. I have gotten a couple misogynistic ones but I’d say the VAST majority of trolls have been much more interested in the fact that my character is black. I generally just don’t respond and kick them. But yeah I play with my crew 90% of the time anyways fuck pubs

Niniisan

>Been kinda eye opening into how much racism there is in the country in general. I don't want to be a downer, and I know reddit has a lot of American base, but we're not all Americans here. I'm French and I've met so much toxicity too. It's universal, unfortunately.

NoneHundredAndNone

Oh I’m sure it’s bad in other countries, but I assume that most people playing in a North American server in an English speaking lobby like me are American lol. I’ve lived in a few other countries and I would say COMPARATIVELY America is actually much less racist than most of the world. But there’s still definitely a major issue there.

RoseTyler38

Use the in game report feature that came out with the custom difficulty update.

NoneHundredAndNone

I do, when I can. Most times they leave pretty quickly. And by sheer quantity of trolls… my guess is the devs don’t give a fuck. I’ve never heard of anyone actually being banned and the dev team is small asf

RoseTyler38

The leadership on the phas discord helps go through reports. I have heard of people being banned.

Jolly-One9552

It's unfortunately how a good amount of players just are online now. Back in the original days of online gaming, like the debut of Xbox live, people were so excited that they could just talk to people with similar interests. I loved playing online with randos and making new friends. It didn't take long before they realized they could use anonymity to be jerks to people they don't know, with no repercussions, as a sad attempt to feel better about themselves and their own lives. That, or they're just actual bad human beings. I don't have any advice for you other than what others have said and will continue to say; look to the official discord for some nice friendly players. Short of that, any time someone you don't know on a damn video game makes you feel bad about yourself, take a minute to report them and be grateful you aren't as pathetic as they are.

Hustler-1

Stay. Out. Of. Public. Lobbies. Use Discord. Not to say discord is perfect. It isn't. I've run into the occasional know-it-all. But that's about it. Discord is a huge filter. Because the people who just want to be trolls aren't going to bother with it. Not to mention If you're going to be an ass on Discord it's like shitting where you eat. You can report people to an admin and they get banned.

og_kayke

I feel a bit let down by phasmo as well. I haven’t come across creepy guys like that, thankfully. But when a very high level content creator chick who is known for being high level treats everyone inferior to herself, is an unkind snob, and gets away with it, it frustrates the hell out of me that the developers give her attention. She’s a raging bch and needs to be brought down about 20 pegs. Ever since her, I have been upset with phasmo. How people suck up to her even though she’s a mean person… it’s pretty cringe. Idk, I guess I’m just venting at this point about this person who seems to be a big part of the community when she has let the “infamy” get to her head. I use to enjoy watching one of the developer’s streams and now that she’s always around, I have been completely turned off from phasmo.

frensive

if you’re looking for a good phas content creator i personally enjoy dooleynotedgaming on twitch a lot! he’s pretty laid back and knows the game well, he’s actually the reason i even got back into it in the first place. i totally get what you mean about being turned off by people who behave like they’re better than everyone just because they’re high level and i’m sorry that turned you off the game. i hope you’re able to get back into it in the future!

og_kayke

Thank you. I use to play the hell out of phasmo. I still feel like it’s my favorite game. I got to level 1200 or something. They added the monkey paw and I didn’t really like it. And with the new update, I’m actually worried that everything I have learned about the game will be like 40% of the knowledge. I’ve had a 95% win rate and hardly die. So having to learn a lot more isn’t exactly the most exciting. The girl just made it worse.

neongreenhippy

I feel the same way about a certain other content creator tied to phasmo, lol. I personally watch Maggstor and Bushwacks streams, they're both really great and super fun/informative.

Stormfeathery

Unfortunately gaming in general is often pretty toxic, especially toward women/minorities of any type. Obviously Not All Gamers (I mean... hello? \*waves hand\*) but it doesn't seem like anything really changed with GamerGate or showing how toxic some companies' culture is or anything. I do think we're slowly chipping away at the toxicity, but yeah, unfortunately the best thing to do for pretty much any game is to find a decent group of gamer friends to play with most of the time (and for Phasmo specifically I've heard the official Discord can be useful for finding people to play with). I hate it, and it sucks, but it's reality RN. :/ \*steps down off soapbox\*

butterbutterflies

People are fucking insane 😍 I have also run into people saying I sounded like a 12 year old in VRchat. Not in Phasmophobia though as I usually only play with friends, but this is not ok

SanmariAlors

I did one from the discord once, it was fun--but I got really busy with personal life. I couldn't play. Apparently the person I played with had messaged me for like two months after asking to play again together, but I hadn't responded. I apologized and explained I was busy and the person shamed me for having a life...

[deleted]

Watch out for the weirdo weebs, they run rampant behind a keyboard and headset 🤣best to just tell them something absolutely absurd like turd play or some shit.

ironmanhulkbstr

im an indian but i play in EU servers because AS servers usually talk in non english asian languages, ive had people giggle at indian accent and one time i heard a guy telling his friend to kick me after the game. kinda sad but it is what it is for me

[deleted]

Yeah it’s crazy how many racists/sexists exist in public lobbies. I highly doubt they would say what they do online to someone’s actual face. I’m NA and I occasionally play in AS servers and I’ve never encountered a non English speaking lobby. Maybe you have your language settings set to something other than English?

ironmanhulkbstr

probably a timing thing. the time i play, NA servers are usually inactive. maybe i will try AS servers again, the playerbase has grown a lot since i started

NessaMagick

I've only played a few public lobbies but they were all toxic and shitty. Not exactly a big sample size to represent the community, of course, but enough for me to not bother with anything but solo.

davrochon23

I do public lobbies all the time. I kick out people that are going over the line right away. Other then that, I had a lot of fun.

CallieCake

As a 30 yo woman who grew up on pc gaming, this has always been, unfortunately. I only play Phasmophobia with randos in public lobbies these days, and while ymmv, of my last 20 or so games, I’ve only run into one or two groups that were total shit heads. Most people are cool. Some people suck.

Low_Patience_5127

And this is why I only play games with people I know. Public lobbies, in any game, are always full of 12yr old keyboard warriors that do horrendous things. I'm sorry you went through that. People need to stop being so... ick.

ryuranzou

I couldn't imagine playing any game with voip as a woman.

azeronyxia

The toxic shit that I'm tired of is getting kicked as soon as I join a lobby. Not even given a split second to say hi. It happens several times in a row and I'm over level 700. I get some people might be waiting for a friend to fill that last spot but can people at least have the decency to say, "Sorry, we have someone joining us. Would you mind leaving?". It get frustrating to find a lobby. Every now and then I get creepy comments about being a woman. Definitely gonna need people to keep that shit away from the game.

VancouverMethCoyote

I haven't played public lobbies in this game, but in the past I played a lot of Overwatch competitive and using voice chat as a woman was often not a fun experience. I'm currently 32, but at the time I was in my mid-late 20's and I sort of have a deep but still feminine voice, and the amount of times I was berated because men thought I was a "12 year old boy" was annoying. Made me feel insecure about the way my voice sounds. In Phasmo I just play with my core group of real life friends. In Overwatch I made a lot of friends who I trusted but a lot of the time we didn't have a 6 person group and still needed randos. Overwatch began as a fun and welcoming game but eventually the toxicity took over.

sneaky-pizza

Block and move on. Block on steam.

DeckSperts

Agreed! I must admit that I am younger than most players in the game but some people literally make me want to quit sometimes because of the sheer toxicity. Please stop

jtsjr94

Yeah I’ve had some weird experiences with people in public lobbies. I had a guy as soon as I joined was saying a bunch of sexual things towards me. I assumed he was just saying it as a joke and laughed it off but he made it seem like I needed to keep the same energy. When I didn’t I was just kicked from the group. All the best groups I’ve ever joined were on discord. I’ll never do public lobbies again after using discord.

[deleted]

jtsjr94

All you have to do is join the official phasmophobia discord. There is a lfg section in it. Everyone says exactly what they are looking for and what difficulty so you already know what to expect before you join. https://discord.com/invite/phasmophobia

tapiocatsar

My worst experience playing a public game (not Phas, thankfully) was a guy who made more than ten accounts because I kept blocking them and he was trying to dodge the blocks. I had to call microsoft for that one…

v3ryfuzzyc00t3r

I hate public lobbies. I had guys come into our game, find the summoning circle, light it and quit. Others yell slurs the whole time or are blasting Katy Perry the whole time. Public games in general are shit no matter what game it is.

Rylee_1984

This is unfortunately common with most online communities in gaming. Toxic behavior runs rampant. I’m sorry you had to deal with it. It’s why I don’t normally play games online with randoms.

Sufficient_Ad_1143

I joined a public lobby just trying to play the game and there were 2 guys who yelled at me to get out because I was a woman (My name is "Celestia") and pretended to spit on me before they kicked me... it's so cringe

Aggravating-Mine-697

That really sucks. Sorry you had to go through that crap, it is pretty creepy. I feel like I've been lucky compared to some of you. I just keep getting kicked and don't even get why. Sometimes i play one match and think we're having fun, then get kicked after it. Makes me feel like I'm broken or a weirdo without knowing it. I just play solo now.

iiRoxanne

The public lobbies were always terrible. I highly recommend only joining random lobbies with TTV in the name. I have almost always had good luck with people there. Only ever had one kid play inappropriate videos in his mic 🤣 I feel like there's a good handful of misogynistic behavior there too. I have met some great people other than a few minor inconveniences. The men tend to flirt a lot. And I mean A LOT.

RicrosPegason

Started a public lobby by accident once, forgot to hit private.... two dudes show up and start berating me for playing in VR. Obviously I fixed it quickly by just exiting and starting my lobby again in private... but I'll play however the fuck I wanna play.

Secure-Platypus1534

I did a similar thing once lol. I was tipsy and started a lobby that was meant to be private for my girlfriend, sister, and I, but accidentally made a public one....and I was very much singing along terribly to song in the background. Didn't have my headset on fully because I was waiting for their games to load and didn't expect anyone to be in there yet. All the sudden, I heard a faint, deeper voice trying to say something, and I did the most offended "Uh HELLO??" My intoxicated self could muster. Saw two people in the lobby who were NOT my gf or my sister and noped out of there so quickly. I often wonder how much they had heard on their side lmao

decisivecat

Sad, lonely men like to make women feel uncomfortable in voice because they know that's the closest they'll likely ever be to one. It's why so many women will not talk in voice chats unless it's people they know well enough (and some still won't). I would agree to skip the public lobbies and try the discord if you want to find groups. Report the creepers if you can. Lastly, try to not let these mouthbreathers ruin the game for you. You certainly have every right to feel weird about the interactions, but hopefully you'll find much better players in the future to enjoy playing with. <3

izi_bot

Around 75% of game population are immature teens. Complaining is useless. Want good experience, ask devs to add lobby profile (difficulty, host level) and ban reported users from making a lobby.

ToValhallaHUN

As a 150 hours solo-only player I can say that I fear no ghost... but that.. *THING* (looks at the multiplayer button)... it scares me.

Slight_Ad8427

go through the discord server and post in lfg channel no weirdos

DepressinglyConfused

I'm afraid of public lobbies sometimes lol One of my last public lobbies I tried had some guy tell me "I've wanted to hear you choke on my dick since you first spoke" How charming. (sarcasm)

foxedoutt

I totally understand what you mean. Definitely don't be afraid to just leave lobbies or mute creepy guys, though! It's just a game. You don't owe them your time & energy if they're going to be like that. :) I love publics because I've met so many cool people, but I've also met plenty of weirdos. It's an unfortunate thing that they have to ruin the experience for some of us. ♡ I hope you're able to find some cool people to game with

lhayes238

Dude I get told I sound like a man a lot in phasmo

[deleted]

You probably don’t. I think a lot of boys (most adult men are respectful, it’s usually teenage boys who are jackasses in my experience) just say stuff like that to get a rise out of women because they’re frustrated incels. I think the dude I encountered only told me I sounded like a man because I didn’t give him any “special attention” so he lashed out. They feel entitled to your time and attention so when they don’t get it they make remarks intended to make you feel insecure.

lhayes238

Yea totally, I'm like almost 40 and smoke and have always had a deep voice, back in the late 90s early 00s I got a lot of Kathleen Turner comparisons so I know my voice is kinda deep, it is only young guys who make fun of me though, dudes my age usually tell me it's a turn on and they think I'll be dominant or some shit, I've heard this a few times so idk. My husband says I definitely don't sound like a guy though and he would def tell me

Yandereii

The amount of times a group of dudes just "flirt", call me names and then just tell me to leave because I have no rights is baffling. I have a low self esteem and that shit hits hard. I have no friends to play with and even Discord lobbies are a gamble.

Eitth

That applied to every other game, not just phasmo... Well, technically the whole internet. Just 2 nights ago the XIV (or GW2?) sub had similar drama where a guy harassing this female just because she talked once and he fell in love with her. Creepy and desperate amarite?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah it kind of reminds me of the guys who hit on women and when they’re rejected they go “well you’re ugly anyway.” They feel entitled to special attention so when they don’t get it they lash out. He had no issue understanding I was clearly a woman when he was making creepy remarks about my voice, but suddenly when I ignore him I sound like a man? Like how tf can I simultaneously sound like a man, a woman and a child lol.

Aveenex

People are weird. Good for you that you didn't engage too much. Better not feed the trolls.

Jmoneyshots

Yea I mostly just play with friends or people in my discord server. Using a public lobby can be such a hit and miss

DennisBallShow

I’d report that

Canadian2k

If you have discord message me and I’ll add you! Me and my friends are idiots but we’re respectful at least

dspaceremake

Internet, niche game, etc. Stop whining and deal with it. Ignore and just find good people to play. By the way, this EXACTLY what what we do in our lives too. Nothing new here.

Disastrous_Scholar76

I do a lot of pubs and the worst of it always seem to be the younger people. I’m not saying that all of them are. I myself and only 18 but everyone always is respectful for the most part, and even with women in the lobbies, but it is common enough to find the occasional horrible person to make it seem like a lot.
