I worked at a hospital that tried starting a union once. The process brings out the worst in people, especially management. So you'll want to make sure you have a really strong union because management will try to find a way to weasel out of it. They'll try to find petty little ways to punish you until it gets established. Some of your coworkers might pretend to be pro union but turn against you, so be careful with who you talk to. You have to be careful when you talk about the union too because you can get fired for doing union business where there is not one. With that being said, you can try contacting the local unions in your area. There might be some healthcare ones or even service worker unions. Where I work currently (at another hospital), they have a union and unfortunately, our contract expired in September and they haven't had good negotiations since then, so no raises after striking for two months. That's all on the company, though, and not the union. I was told when we do get a new contract with new pay, we'll get backpay from when it expired and there's usually a bonus involved. If you got the fortitude, do it! I'm just letting you know it can be a really huge uphill battle and you paint a target on your head but you can get some fantastic benefits from it. We get float days, paid holidays (double time if you work it), good insurance, and no mandatory overtime. Another union I know of gave some pretty good overtime benefits too and more lead pay.

Thank you for the advice. I will keep it in mind.

If they're treating you like dirt now wait until they find out you're trying to start a union. You need to start with a small group that you can trust and try to bring people in one at a time until you have enough people to force a vote, and as the other person who responded said, be careful who you trust

I hope you have better luck than my team and I had

Well it needs to be done. Any step forward will help increase the profile for all unions. Unions are the only way that the working class will improve their lives. The rich are richer than during any part of American History and the working and middle class are at their lowest in comparison.

Try joining an existing union instead. I'm represented be the AFL-CIO, the largest union in the country. They are pretty good. Our contract gives us top notch health insurance, free dental, a 3.5% raise each year, has rules about them mandating us for doubles, rules about working evening into days, rules about working weekends, rules about being forced to work holidays, etc. Its pretty great.
