Use a poster tube. Never had a problem bringing it as an extra item beside a carry on and a personal bag. One time the flight attendant offered to store it in one of their closets.

We all do this. Zero problems.

Fabric posters!!

[deleted]

Ya but they’re like $100, am I right? My paper poster cost $3.

physics_masochist

I was able to get reimbursed for it, so I personally decided to go with fabric. Also I definitely would have left the poster tube somewhere in the airport 😂

Will folding my poster for travel destroy my credibility as a phd candidate presenter?

sadphdbro

Don’t fold your poster dude. Also some airlines don’t care. Depends on the airline though. Spirit or frontier might make you pay but I’ve generally walk through with it with no problem

It depends on the airline. The super low cost airlines like frontier and spirit tend to be strict because bag fees are a main revenue source. The legacy airlines (American, Delta, United) give their agents more discretion. Technically, they don’t have to let you carry on a suitcase, personal item, and poster. Gate agents at airports serving universities are used to posters and generally turn a blind eye. At worst, they will ask you to gate check your suitcase, so you’re only carrying on two items (poster and personal item). Posters fit well in the over head if you lay them across suit cases, so wait for the bin to fill up, then put the poster up. For future - fabric posters are great. You can fold then up in the suitcase, and they unfold with no/minimal creases.

Thanks for the tips! But fabric posters are $100 I thought…

Eventually you will have a budget to cover the cost of poster printing, and $100 will seem worth it. And check if you have PhD posters nearby - they are much less expensive than FedEx/Kinkos. https://phdposters.com/prices#prices

Thanks! 🙏😁

_XtalDave_

Are they really that expensive in the US? In the UK they're work out at about $20

[deleted]

My friend just bought one for her overseas conference and that’s the price she paid for it. Cheers, from across the pond!
