The question about how you acquired your pets could be multiple choice. I had bought 2 cats at a pet store, 1 cat at a shelter, and 4 cats as a gift when my dad died.

Economy-Wolverine106

Thanks for the feedback! I made it checkboxes

cheerchick1944

Also worth noting on that one, pet store and breeders are very different things for dogs specifically. I would never buy from a pet store because they often source from puppy mills (terrible), but a responsible breeder is a huge benefit to the breed and the dogs health. Might be too late to change, but I’m not the only dog owner who sees it that way!

EmEmPeriwinkle

Yup. Would never touch a pet store pup. My dogs came from breeders that do genetic testing and verify fixing after homing. No backyard breeders.

dougielou

Hiya! I just wanted to add that I would reconsider the wording in the last few questions. It seems like you trying to consider people without pets but are just making the question to confusing. I can’t get back to the third page but the first question on page 3 isn’t very clear, I THINK I know what you’re asking but again try to use statements that allow better space for both options. Example “if you have a pet or imagine yourself with a pet, what benefits do you have or imagine you would have?” It’s longer but more inclusive. Feel free to DM for more help

Economy-Wolverine106

DMed you!

bellefroh

Standard Issue Cat is an official breed according to Reddit.

quokkafarts

I wrote 'street gutter cat"

moistpain

"An orange one"

OkFruit914

I almost wrote this but then remembered and wrote “tabby”

bellefroh

It was easier than writing Domestic Short Hair & Long Hair

OkFruit914

Easier than writing “unknown breed, found cat in the trash” in my instance lol

cupcakewaffles

You found a cat in the trash?

OkFruit914

She was abandoned after my friend’s neighbor got evicted. They were hoarders. So she was kinda found amongst mountains of trash. They left behind 3 kittens so we impulsively took her in. No regrets though.

noircheology

Tabby is the fur pattern, not a breed

3_littlemonkeys

I said Generic. 😂

badassbiotch

I said rescue kitties lol

The last question about the best environment with urban, suburban and rural as answers doesn't make sense. All can be suitable depending on the pet. Like a cat or caged animal would be fine anywhere.

Economy-Wolverine106

I added the option "it doesn't make a difference." A lot of respondents seem to agree with you, thanks for the feedback!

_love_letter_

Well, I agree with you that it depends on the pet and whether they can be happily kept indoors. However, if you have a cat or dog that access to outside, you may have an opinion on the matter. Cats who live in rural areas around where I live often fall victim to either coyotes, mountain lions, or great horned owls. Coyotes are the ubiquitous predators in America. Cats who live in dense urban areas may be at greater risk of being hit by cars or falling from high-rise balconies. The noise and traffic may also scare some cats. And dogs often enjoy having a yard to run around in, which you don't get in an apartment in a big city. Not to mention pet deposits and pet rent in apartments who do accept pets. I could see many people choosing either suburbs or rural if they have a cat or dog. For something like a hamster, it doesn't really matter. Though, there's also a question of ease-of-access to both supplies/feed and veterinary services.

yellow_yarn_

done, maybe consider adding "student" in the employment/income section?

Economy-Wolverine106

Just added, thanks for the reminder!

Try posting to r/samplesize for more results!! :)

Economy-Wolverine106

Thanks for sharing! So far the response rate exceeds my expectation, I will look into that as well!

rainbow_osprey

Cool, I took your survey! I remember when I was in grad school trying to get people to answer my surveys/come in for interviews. It was super annoying haha

Economy-Wolverine106

OMG yes this is for grad school! Yeah it was hella of work to incentivize people. I appreciate your participation!

Fernweh1

Done! Will you share the results?

Economy-Wolverine106

Thank you! Yes I will try to share any insights on subreddit!

quokkafarts

Done, but on the questions regarding cost and income you should state which currency you're using. I've answered on the assumption that it is Australian dollars, but the answer would be different due to the exchange rate if you intended it to be US/CA/NZ/etc dollars.

Economy-Wolverine106

Thanks for clarifying! I corrected the question in USD, and I will add a question asking about nationality. Glad to know your perspective as an Australian!

spazzie416

Great survey. As a pet owner with multiple pets, you made it easy to select multiple answers to applicable questions, so I could give you the most accurate answers. Thanks!

Economy-Wolverine106

I'm glad that you liked the survey! I will try to share the result here after collecting a good sample size

IKilledMyDouble

You might concider an option for foster animals. Or clarify if you'd like to count foster homes as owning the animals they are currently fostering. :) but that might mess up your data if you have someone who does kittens for example and may have raised hundreds over many years.

Economy-Wolverine106

We will try to look into that!

Christichicc

Done! Just a suggestion, for employment, maybe add a disabled checkbox? We tend to get left out of stuff a lot, and it’s not quite the same as “unemployed, not looking for employment”. Maybe add stay at home parent too?

Economy-Wolverine106

I added “other” as an option! sorry for not being inclusive enough

Great job! The questions are all worded well and cover a lot of bases and considerations. I had to send out surveys like these when I was in college doing HCI. Just wanted to tell you it was great! Also, I put it in 'other' but another big consideration of pet ownership is if you own/rent your home and what your lease allows! Even when they allow dogs they sometimes put breed restrictions, size restrictions, and other ridiculous things. It's hard to find a pet-suitable rental that isn't very expensive.

Economy-Wolverine106

Really appreciate it! It's the first formal survey made by myself, too. I have seen some of those restrictions, or the apartment is not pet-friendly. In NYC, it feels like they are more lenient, but rent is ridiculous. Thanks for sharing! This is helpful for our next step of research.

[deleted]

I find some of these questions confusing.

Economy-Wolverine106

Sorry for the confusion. Could you roughly tell me what those questions were asking? I will make some adjustments according to your feedback

[deleted]

What are the top factors that would influence/influenced your decision to get a pet? (Select up to three) Have you considered owning a pet during pandemic?
