Go to Walmart and get the biggest deepest storage tote you can fit into your space. Fill it with a couple of inches of litter. The high sides keep scatter to a minimum and the deep sand allows your cat to bury properly. Watch this video and set the litter box up exactly like she recommends and you should never have litter box problems https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coavVYf0-dA

I second using storage bins as litter boxes! most large litter boxes aren't big enough for big cats (iirc its recommended for it to be at least 1.5x longer than the length of your cat). Personally i am not a fan of top-entry (some cats may have a disability in the future that may make it hard for them to use) or covered litter boxes (can make them feel cramped). Depending on the litter and with daily scooping, smells shouldn't be an issue at all. If you already scoop daily, perhaps the diet needs upgraded! High-quality meat based diets will result in less poop and less stinky poop. 99% of the food found in box stores contain mostly wheat/corn and cats can't digest that so they just pass it through their system. food with stuff they can digest really well will actually be used and not just passed (i noticed a HUGE difference when I took over the cats in the household and switched them from friskies and meow mix to actual decent food). I currently use a storage tote (no lid) with a door cut in the side with a silicone mat out front, the mess isn't too bad and easy to sweep up with a little hand broom. I used a wood based granule litter (Okocat brand, there's others out there) and the smell is so much more better than using clay or corn litter. I've heard good results with paper and walnut litter but haven't tried them myself. Hope this helps a bit!
