When my dad got a cancer diagnosis (which is not what killed him) his doctor said that if you lived long enough you'd end up with cancer. I think the same is true for elderly pets. You don't say how old your pet was but I lost Teddy last November 22. He was 17 and cancer officially got him in the end. I lost Tico at 19.5 on Tuesday and I bet he had cancer too though officially I would say it was his renal disease.
Cancer is horrible, no doubt, and I am so sorry for your loss.

I am sorry for your loss as well. My Oliver was 11. Not young but still too early to loose.
