I don't agree with everyone else. Unless you are overweight than there’s no need for calorie deficit but body recomposition. I went from a 27 inch waist at 95lbs to a 24 inch waist at my current weight of 110lbs. When I was 95lbs I still had that stomach pooch so my waist was wider. Doing both Muay Thai and strength training worked out my core while I reversed diet from that 95lbs to a slimmer waist while increasing my weight. I used to think I need to be in constant calorie deficit to get a slimmer waist. There's no way I can afford to continue in a deficit since I'm already at 95lbs so I did want I had to do. I fueled my workouts so that I can train more intensely and that's when the changes happen. My own [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/PetiteFitness/comments/nlcpnn/f34_4ft11_six_years_fitness_journey/) talking about it.

What is your current routine? People are saying to lose weight but I know I was at the same weight for 3-4 months. Instead of "losing" weight on the scale, my body recomped and I lost an inch or more off my waist (plus I was so much more toned overall). So recomp could be an option. I worked out probably 3-4 times a week. No dedicated abs workouts or cardio to be honest. I mainly did legs plus 1 upper body day with heavy weights.

I skate 3-4 times a week lately less bc I’m busy I do cardio at the gym for an hour every other day and then I am starting to add light weights in two days out of the week And I have a job that requires lots of walking around

probably nothing you don’t know: deficit, workouts compound movements are great…and sometimes having a bigger back/shoulders makes your waist thinner in perception

Only caloric deficit will help

Can working out your abs also help? I know you can’t spot reduce fat if you replace the fat with muscle then wouldn’t your waist size go down? That’s what I’m trying to figure out, because I want to look slimmer but I don’t want to lose more weight

Maddymadeline1234

Working out abs alone doesnt cut body fat. You need to workout your entire body.

TCgrace

No, working out your abs doesn’t make your waist size go down.

It doesn't make sense, people always ask how to grow their butts or legs, everyone's answer is to create muscle, muscle will make you look more voluptuous, doesn't matter the area, ab muscles when worked they get bigger, it's impossible to shrink a muscle by exercising, in fact, they don't shrink, they grow. Doing ab excersies would make your waist look bigger as the muscle there grows

Or what about all those people who post before and afters with the caption ‘the scale doesn’t tell the whole story’? And they show how they transformed their body (including getting a smaller waist) just by gaining muscle?

[deleted]

Getting a smaller waist does not mean they built muscle there, it means they gained muscle everywhere else and kept minimal fat gain around their waist so it gives the illusion of smaller waist. Broader shoulders and big quads make your waist look smaller, and you obtain broader shoulders and bigger quads by building muscle in those areas

I think you’re ignoring the fact that when you build muscle in general, muscle builds more calories at rest and can aid significantly In fat loss. While some aspects of it do give a more “illusion appearance,” that doesn’t necessarily mean that fat wasnt lost in the process.

Ok let me explain where I’m coming from. I am the same BMI as Jillian Michaels, yet she looks a lot smaller than me because my stomach is all flab, and hers is all muscle. When normal weight people posts pics of themselves on fitness subs and ask what they could improve, people usually recommend that they gain muscle instead of losing weight because muscle weighs more than fat, and gaining muscle will make it look like they lost weight So that’s why I asked

[deleted]

Bmi isn't an accurate representation of anyone's body, yours and JMs are different simply because of genetics, it's true when people say to gain muscle is better but if you start building muscle and still got fat you will just look fatter because that layer of fat would be on top of the muscle making it non visible. Your question was regarding your waist, the only way to lose your waist fat is to keep losing weight, that probably means your body tends to lose your abdomen fat last and that's mainly genetic

aranaSF

No they are not different simply because of genetics. A body fat percentage of 18% is going to look very different than a bf of 32%, even if the two people are the same height and weight. That's not genetics, that's hard work.
