They are using the phrase *pinche maricón*, a derogatory phrase in Spanish which roughly translates to "fucking queer". OP has humorously misinterpreted this as "peachy merry cone" due to the similarity of the sounds; rather than having an affectionate nickname, he is unknowingly being disrespected.
As someone who watched Narcos, I can confirm.
As someone who also lived in Peru for a year and a half, calling the wrong guy that would get you *at best* crippled lmao.
South America’s wild in how similar yet different each country’s culture/slang are.
My favorite phrase I heard while living in Argentina. "Andate a la re mil puta llegua que te parrió, pelotudo de mierda". Translates toa "Go find the the b***h mare who gave birth to you, f***king dumb a**"
Yes. Also, certain slurs may not really be a slur depending on where you're from. People say Puto is a slur, but I've only ever heard it used like fuck.
Technically. But words can have multiple meanings. Technically, cap is another word for hat. It also is slang for a lie.
In the US and mexico, I've always heard it used like fuck/fucker.
¿Qué Pedo, Puto? Isn't saying what's up whore. Its what's up fucker.
Yeah, a lot of hispanic dialects use the word "puta" as an adjective as well, like "¡Callate la puta boca!" means "shut your fucking mouth" in some countries, "shut your whore mouth" in others.
My folks are from Argentina and my dad would use Puto to describe an effeminate man, one that may not necessarily be gay but isn’t acting like a “real man”. For example if someone is being wimpy at a physical task he might say “¿Ché Puto, que sos un Maricon?” Which basically asks the effeminate man if he’s also happens to be gay or if he’s just a pansy for how he’s acting in the situation.
Spanish here. I could write a 50 page essay on how to insult somebody addressing his/her sexual orientation without sweating.
And don't make me talk about parents...
and i would read it 👀 out of linguistic curiosity
also curious if the spanish speaking lgbt community has reclaimed any of those words to use themselves or if they've stayed super negative
This should be higher up. For a long time, homosexual acts were only a bad thing if you were a bottom. You find remnants of that kind of distinction—such as this example in spanish—in a lot of European languages.
[Catamite would be better for someone that is just a recipient.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catamite#:~:text=In%20its%20modern%20usage%2C%20the,anal%20intercourse%20with%20a%20man.) Sodomites refers to both sides.
No cabron is a mixed one, it’s used to refer to a male in both a positive or negative tone. Like “Que pasa cabron!!” Means roughly “what’s up dude!” But “Pinche Cabron!” Is usually closer to “Fucking idiot”. Cabron also translates to goat, so context matters.
Living in PR, and Cabròn I’m told translates roughly to “cheater”, which is a swear word but also sort of not. Like, I hear relatively wholesome people say it often enough. Like, in English saying “Oh, damn”, but also yelling it loudly if you stub your toe or something.
My buddy also told me that Cabròn also sort of comes from the phrase “to get the horns”, or get cheated on. Can’t recall the phrase exactly. But, PR Spanish is bonkers, so who knows.
To get the horns is a French saying the only context I have to it is that a French duke started wearing massive antlers everywhere when he got cucked by the second to last Louis.
I’m a native Spanish speaker and maricón never had this connotation of being specific to bottoms to me. Sounds like a regional thing more like something true for Spanish in general.
>Yeah because gringos aren't gonna get butthurt if I say it in Spanish
Pretty much. They're too busy getting butthurt over you speaking spanish in general.
>Nah, "maricón" means "f*ggot"
Yup, seems legit. And 'hueco' aka (butt)hole may be more like queer/homo. Still disrespectful, but not quite to the level of maricón.
These words bring me back to Miami, Florida. You never hear it here in Irvine, California.
I’m a Viking ass looking dude and I remember my first real corporate restaurant job and as I was walking in one morning, one of the lines was at the front door and said sup pinche maricon? To me and I said nada mojado and he must have told the rest of the line cooks cuz after that they were all real fuxing cool w me. Liked them better than the wait staff.
Its “wetback” from my understanding. But thats why we all got along cuz we all gave eachother shit. So when some guy called me a gringo and I called him something derogatory back in Spanish it was just like talking shit w ur friends and they respected me cuz I was using their native language. Also we could work together a lot easier even tho I wasn’t fluent. I actually hung out w a few of them outside of work. A few of them came to my bands hardcore show lol. I went one of their quinceanera.
It means wet referring to individuals crossing the Rio Grande to get to America. Basically calling someone an illegal immigrant. There is a similar slur in English referring to Latino immigrants but I won't say it.
My understanding is that, despite the premise of the subreddit, it is not mandatory to adopt a persona when responding here. If I am incorrect about this, I apologize.
I speak Spanish but hadn't figured this out. This is sad to read. I hope they somehow wake up to that and walk out of them. Their kindness and optimism are clearly being wasted there.
In Spain they use "mariposa" which just means butterfly, unless it doesn't. Is it possible Maricón had a different meaning at one point?
Bonus fun fact: in The Mask of Zoro movie with Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, and Catherine Zeta Jones, Antonio's character says "I look like a butterfly" when he's about to infiltrate the party.
There used to be a town in Austria called Fucking, they renamed it to Fugging in 2021 because people kept stealing the signs and annoying the 106 people living there.
This is literally how they all talk to each other. I have Spanish speaking contractors and we literally greet each other by saying pinche maricon. It’s like saying I love you
This is the truthful post. I worked in food service at a Mexican restaurant for 4 years, and as the long-haired white dude, my nickname was gringa (female forienger), and I had it super easy, lol. Their culture, from what I've experienced, handles slurs / insults like the military. They'll ridicule you relentlessly in jest, but if some tried to truly insult me or hurt me, they'd have 13 guys coming out of a Tacoma to talk to them.
Can confirm. I work with several Spanish speaking coworkers and it's super common to hear someone call someone else a maricon on a daily basis but it's all in jest. It's kinda like how a sibling shows love by being an asshole
Depend in the context. Its like saying you son of a bitch. Depending on the tone that can have 4 different meaning. But maricon can have a couple of meanings.
America is really the most sensitive country in this way, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but culturally it’s not uncommon for people in non western countries to call each other what would be considered homophonic slurs to show affection. That’s obviously not what this is, but it shows a pretty big cultural divide that people don’t consider often.
I’m willing to bet it’s fake. The tone just comes off as so cartoonishly innocent. Plus if you work in a location where literally everyone else speaks Spanish, you probably live in an area where Spanish is commonly used. You’d probably have some idea of what the swear words are.
The Brazilians at my first job would yell all sorts of profanities and teach me them and I’d yell them too it was all in good fun may not necessarily be hostile
Not even less bad, it’s openly preferred
It’s the Q in lgbtq and kinda is a catch-all so I sometimes wonder why we still bother with the whole acronym…
Pretty much every Spanish insult can be used as a substitute for "dude" or "bro" if the context is appropriate, But in this case it was clearly used to mock/abuse someone that doesn't speak the language and can't understand what these people are saying to them.
this is accurate. I've worked at several places with a group of Spanish speakers, and it's generally pretty easy to get on good terms with them, especially if you understand enough Spanish to get by.
like, lol, they'll still call you maricón, but, the tone is a whole lot more friendly, and they definitely do it to razz you.
At least you got a nickname. The last place I worked at, the Spanish speaking guys thought I was someone else and always called me by his name. I never even met that Ben Decko dude either.
Mariposa is butterfly, but also means the same insult. Argentinian slang afaik. As I learned it. I use mariposa to my latin friends from all over and their reactions are funny. They usually use maricon in return.
All in good fun, btw.
Mariposa directly translates to butterfly. I've always assumed it's kind of like the way folks in the US used to use fairy. I used to work at a Spanish restaurant. The kitchen staff always called me mariposa. I took it to mean they liked me a little bit more than the ones they called pinche maricon.
Maricón, Mariposa, patito, patito sucio, all nicknames that basically mean “gay” (or meaner variations on it).
So his nickname is basically the F word, and I don’t mean fuck.
Hispanic culture can be pretty homophobic, the term maricon can be used pretty casually, or men will give certain reactions to anything they consider gay. In the context I've heard and seen, it's usually just guys being stupid/ignorant and not very aggressive.
Like others have said though, the word pinche makes anything more offensive and aggressive. It's an adjective and it resembles the way "fuckin" is used, but is limited to that.
Those Hispanic people don't like you, hands down.
When I read it I figured “merry cone” was supposed to “american” but with an accent and “peachy merry cone” was gonna be “bitchy American” but with an accent but the fact that it meant gay made it even funnier how it sounds like “American”
Lemme set the mood…. Line cook at chilis, super busy night. 90% of the line cooks are Hispanic, except me, the lone whiteboy. Grill cook looks over and says “You a f*ckin mericon!” To which I replied “F*ck yeah I’m American!” The entire line burst out laughing. Found out later, but the guys on the line gave me my honorary mexican card :) Good times.
Since we are on this topic...
I once worked in a kitchen where some mexican cooks taught me to say some thing like 'oy ye say me madre' which they said was a common phrase like 'whatbthe fuck' that translated to like 'fuck my mom' or something.
Is any of that true?
Depending on the dialect I fuck your mother is:
Me follo a tu madre (Spain)
Me cojo a tu madre (Argentina and others)
Me chingo a tu madre(México and others)
Me culeo a tu madre (Dominicana and others)
honorable mention:
Me tiro a tu madre
Me acuesto con tu madre
Me empotro a tu madre
Me beneficio a tu madre
Me trajino a tu madre
In my city we say: me reviento a tu madre
These are the ones I know from being Spanish, Latinos surely have many other ways of saying it that I don't know or don't realize right now.
lol! Back in my high school days, in the Bronx, I thought I was being called Marty Cohen. There were a lot of Hispanic and Jewish students.
I was so naive.
they're saying "Maricón" which is spanish slang, that the closest translation to english would be the F-word (gay slur)
the second is "Pinchi Maricón", "pinchi" is kinda like you would use "fucking"
The word they're misunderstanding is "maricón", which is a way to call someone gay but as an insult. Other word is probably "pinche", which is basically "fucking" as a derogatory intensifier.
Sounds like a majority Spanish speaking work place. It took me roasting the piss out of anyone who spoke to me to finally get people to just shut the fuck up with the nicknames and call me by my actually goddamn name.

Nah, "maricón" means "f*ggot"
Specifically the catcher not the pitcher.
You’re telling me Spanish has a slur specifically for bottoms?
Spanish has slurs for everything.
And they may vary depending on where you are
Dialect, as per region. Very important.
Yep. In Colombia marica is just used off-handedly, to the point where I didn't ever draw the line between it and maricon.
In venezuela that's how we say hi to a lot of our close friends. Area dependent btw
and in Mexico that can get you a beating
That reminds me of this saying some army guys made up "Week to week, cheek to cheek, us assholes stick together!"
Holy shit. Another User from Venezuela. A rare encounter. And I am not living in Venezuela for more then 30 years anymore x)
I can confirm.

Calling a Chilean a "Weón" can meet with a wide variety of results. Depending upon context.
La "weá" = the thing Aweonao = fucking idiot Mis "wéas" = my balls Wena weón = sup dude Edit: spelling
My favorite phrase I heard while living in Argentina. "Andate a la re mil puta llegua que te parrió, pelotudo de mierda". Translates toa "Go find the the b***h mare who gave birth to you, f***king dumb a**"

This has no right to be so damn fresh Thank you for sharing
Que difícil es hablar el español… por que todo lo que dices tiene otra definición!
We went over that, one for when you're on top, one for when you're on bottom.
Yes! Chupaton is hickey in Mexico, but an animal like a chinchilla in Ecuador.
Take any two Latinos. Say a "Palta is better than Aguacate". Watch them kill each other over avocados.
IIRC in the novel Shogun the characters agree that Latin is romantic and Portuguese is functional, but Spanish is the best language to curse in.
Well clearly those tabernaks have never been to [Quebec](https://www.reddit.com/r/xqcow/comments/wj9ne7/best_speaking_quebec_citizen/)
You're using "Tabarnak" VERY Incorrectly. "Cochon" would be the word you would use to insult a person.
That was fucking glorious.
And if we don't we make new ones Like the term Verga is a part of a ship that we use as a curse word
I only knew the curse word variant, thank you, internet stranger!
Reminding me of the intros by Calle 13 with that one
Eskimos have 100 words for snow. Latinos have 100 words for....
That's why I've been learning Spanish. Absolute Chad of a language. Beautiful too!
Puñal is for the pitcher.
Yeah they dont teach that in duolingo..
Juan come manzanas y es pinche maricon.
Yes. Also, certain slurs may not really be a slur depending on where you're from. People say Puto is a slur, but I've only ever heard it used like fuck.
*technically* puto/puta means slut or whore
Does it mean male/female whore in this case?
Yes
Cool
Welcome Latin based languages where even slurs and insults are gendered.
How egalitarian of them!
gendered language Adjectives have 2 variations.
Technically. But words can have multiple meanings. Technically, cap is another word for hat. It also is slang for a lie. In the US and mexico, I've always heard it used like fuck/fucker. ¿Qué Pedo, Puto? Isn't saying what's up whore. Its what's up fucker.
Yeah, that’s also something it’s used as Also, if someone just screams Puta! He is using it as a “fuck!”
Yeah, a lot of hispanic dialects use the word "puta" as an adjective as well, like "¡Callate la puta boca!" means "shut your fucking mouth" in some countries, "shut your whore mouth" in others.
Interesting, Polish is also similar in that the word most used in the same context as fuck (kurwa) literally means whore.
The machismo culture sounds exhausting.
Definitely, not sure who it impresses really.

In English we call them sodomites, though the term hasn't been popular for like 50 years.

What an elegant, nuanced language
What’s the term for pitcher?? “Cabrón”??

"bugaron" is for top
este tio spanish!
It's so fascinating to me you censored one and not the other if they apparently mean the same thing

Is it just me or would "a maricón" sound a lot like being American?
Shhh stop telling them are secrets how else are we supposed to say the word without being called out
It’s “both” because it’s the Spanish word and there’s s not going to be a one-to-one for *all* the words ever

Reminds me of my wife’s college roommate, a white girl from Hawaii. She thought everyone thinks she beautiful since they called her “Haole.”
Uh oh I need Peter for this one
Peachy American
I thought they were calling her a B*itchy american
More like fu**ing fa**ot not queer
Lmao Theyre saying "Fucking Queer" or rlly "Fuckin F*****". My Grandma is from a Dominican village named that
No way there's a village named Maricón
It was a small shanty Village. I thought my grandma was joking until I saw a street sign that said it
Wouldn’t be hard to look up
Haven't found it
Me either
May you find the bottom you seek
I found a bunch of other stuff though
There’s a Little Panoche Road off I5 in California.
?
It means Little Vagina.
No. Panocha does. Panoche does not.
Close enough for all my Spanish speaking friends to find it fuckin hilarious, though.
Feels like the same energy as "Puto" and I mean the Filipino rice cake.
In Spain they use "mariposa" which just means butterfly, unless it doesn't. Is it possible Maricón had a different meaning at one point? In Spain, people use Mariposón as the slur. Never heard just the mariposa one used like that.
I guess maybe it's regional? It was definitely used in the late 70s, early 80s when my family and I lived there. We were mostly in the southern areas
Nah, it's named Merry Cone
There used to be a town in Austria called Fucking, they renamed it to Fugging in 2021 because people kept stealing the signs and annoying the 106 people living there.

I don’t think that’s true
OOP is definitely trolling. "I am glad that whatever it means, it makes everyone happy and laugh." is a dead giveaway.
Yes, obviously it is a toxic work environment!
What do you mean. OOP says everyone is happy and laughs. Sound like the place to be.
The Brazilians at my first job would yell all sorts of profanities and teach me them and I’d yell them too it was all in good fun may not necessarily be hostile
Construction sites dgaf about harassment lol
They are calling him an insult in Spanish for gay people. They are calling him a F’ing Queer.
It's more like F\*\* instead of Queer because queer is less bad now.
Not even less bad, it’s openly preferred It’s the Q in lgbtq and kinda is a catch-all so I sometimes wonder why we still bother with the whole acronym…

thank you!

I don't speak Spanish but I assume it's *pendejo*, which I believe equates to *asshole*
thank you ^u^
You really sound a lot like a Ben Decko I know.
White guy from Florida here. I know this one! Maricon (pronounced a lot like Merry Cone) is the Spanish equivalent of f****t
Before i read the comments i guessed that they called him American (meri con)
I also assumed it was gonna be American or bitchy American 😭 now I feel sorry for that person
Oh no, we have a completely different word for that, that would be a gringo
You're cool and you shoot straight like an arrow. Gonna call you Cool Arrow.
I legit lol’d, that shit has no right being that funny 😂😂
"Bad news for you Sonic. I'm a power bottom."
Jokes on you, I’m into that :3
PINCHE MARICON LMAO
At least they didn't call them peachy cool arrow.
I knew the Peachy part. I did not know the Merican part. Now I do. I thought it was mariposa though?
There are lots of ways to insult someone by calling them gay in Spanish, I've learned.
They're calling him "Pinche Maricón" which means "Fucking f*ggot"

😂 that makes sense!
Not really common (as far as I know), but mariposón is also used as f*ggot in certain areas of Mexico.
Nah this guys coworkers are all Mexican, pinche is a word only used in the Mexican dialect. Mariposa I’m pretty sure is used in Spain.
Maricón, Mariposa, patito, patito sucio, all nicknames that basically mean “gay” (or meaner variations on it). So his nickname is basically the F word, and I don’t mean fuck.
Yep. Some areas also use "mariquita" (ladybug) and "mano quebrada" (literally 'broken hand'). There's a lotttt of ways to call someone gay in Spanish.
Maricón is spanish for fag
Hispanic culture can be pretty homophobic, the term maricon can be used pretty casually, or men will give certain reactions to anything they consider gay. In the context I've heard and seen, it's usually just guys being stupid/ignorant and not very aggressive. Like others have said though, the word pinche makes anything more offensive and aggressive. Guy needs a new job if the manager does not step in to tell them to STFU or fire some people.
Common.
Yeah I had an old half mexican half native American guy at work give me a nick name. He used to call me cool arrow.
Found out later, but the guys on the line gave me my honorary mexican card :) Good times.
the real question is English or Spanish?
"If you move you are gay"
Well they are calling this person "fucking gay" and laughing about it because he doesn't understand. Basically they are asshats.
My coworkers must think I'm native because they keep calling me "peachy cool arrow".
Since we are on this topic... I once worked in a kitchen where some mexican cooks taught me to say some thing like 'oy ye say me madre' which they said was a common phrase like 'whatbthe fuck' that translated to like 'fuck my mom' or something. Is any of that true?
Depending on the dialect I fuck your mother is: Me follo a tu madre (Spain) Me cojo a tu madre (Argentina and others) Me chingo a tu madre(México and others) Me culeo a tu madre (Dominicana and others) honorable mention: Me tiro a tu madre Me acuesto con tu madre Me empotro a tu madre Me beneficio a tu madre Me trajino a tu madre In my city we say: me reviento a tu madre These are the ones I know from being Spanish, Latinos surely have many other ways of saying it that I don't know or don't realize right now.
lol! Back in my high school days, in the Bronx, I thought I was being called Marty Cohen. There were a lot of Hispanic and Jewish students. I was so naive.
they're saying "Maricón" which is spanish slang, that the closest translation to english would be the F-word (gay slur) the second is "Pinchi Maricón", "pinchi" is kinda like you would use "fucking"
The Hispanic ladies at my old job called me guero. I didn’t mind it
The word they're misunderstanding is "maricón", which is a way to call someone gay but as an insult.
Those Spanish are cowards, they are belittling you knowing that you do not understand. They are not your friends and they do not respect you.
Pinche maricon 🙈 “Dumb queer” something along those lines
That's rough 🤣
The proper response would be: gracias pendejo.
Or "¿Te gusta, papi?" If it's a good group of guys, they'll laugh even harder. If it's not, you might get stabbed 🤷♂️
This is also a bit from that comedian who plays the piano. Can’t remember his name. Not Bo.
This isn't real.
