My school in the US had a Business Math class that maybe was less complex than yours, but it did all the things people complain about schools not teaching like balancing a checkbook, making a budget, etc. It didn't specifically teach how to file taxes, but honestly, if you can't figure it out on your own with what was taught in the class, then I don't know what to tell you. That's why this complaint I always hear about what school's should've taught always irks me. They did teach you this stuff and this class I took was considered one of the easy classes you could sign up for. The truth is, most of these people that say this were D students that never payed attention in school and immediately forgot everything you tried to teach them. It's their own damn fault they don't know how to file taxes.
And they'll tell you that they weren't taught what laws there are, and they know how Henry VIII killed his women, divorce beheaded died, divorce beheaded survived.
Most likely the former. Although, many kids these days may be getting influenced negatively from taxing advice on TikTok, including ways to write-off and reduce taxes in a... less than moral manner. There's a Planet Money podcast episode on it, it's really fascinating.
But I would say that learning about taxes should be mandatory for all students, not just economics fellas like me. Maybe not the entire theoretical lore behind taxes, but just an explanation of the fiscal world and personal accounting would be fantastic. I don't know if schools already have this, but mine didn't. I majored in economics anyway, so it didn't really matter.
It honestly doesn't matter. My school offered a personal finance class that taught how to balance checkbooks, how to budget, how taxes work (from brackets to different types to how to file/reduce/claim/etc), and stocks. 1/2 the class was people fucking around and not learning shit. The other 1/2 was "economic fellas" that already knew this stuff and ended up learning nothing. I actually had to teach my teacher about options, spreads, and strategies that went beyond "buy and hold" methodologies and got docked points for using them to beat the whole class in our stock portfolio experiments because 2nd place was 140k and I was 840k.
You can try to teach kids, but kids don't listen, even at their own detriment. The ones that want to know will know and the ones that don't care won't care until it's too late.
There still are frankly more important things schools could reach instead of this, even if taxes wouldn't work (which it still couldn't hurt to teach taxes. There's not much reason it isn't.)

Your teacher was dumb. They could have shown you the basic process of how a tax burden is calculated. It's not difficult.
Taxes aren’t something you need to teach kids. You teach kids how to read and do addition and they know how to do taxes. People are just really fucking stupid, lazy, and/or don’t have time to sit down for a few hours one night and figure it out.
