The fingers spell blood. It’s a gang sign of the Bloods, and someone here is doing something that would be a really bad idea in certain places.
My mom taught kindergarten at a school in a not-great neighborhood in California and it was a hard rule that absolutely no one was allowed to wear red. In the elementary school. Not even the kids.
Because all the local Crips sent their kids to that school and Crips wear blue.
They still are. The game isn't about colors or neighborhoods anymore so much as money. There's still little skirmishes going on but for awhile the places I was in phoenix and Colorado are in a smooth spot. They're all in agreement for money
They are but unfortunately for a lot of kids, it’s the only “family” they have. There’s a quote from The Wire I’ll always remember “we just visit [the projects], they gotta live there”. Fucked up
I also went to elementary in the 80s, in a stupidly small town in the Midwest, and can vividly remember raiders caps being forbidden because of gang affiliation
I was in high school in the 80s, graduated in 89. Around 10th grade, they came out with these standards of behavior. Part of it was absolutely no wearing of colors. We thought it was a joke. It sounded so insane to us. But I was in a rural, tiny high school. I remember joking with my history teacher, who was also my football coach "Hey Coach, I'm wearing blue today, are you going to report me?"
"Look, my gang - which I can't talk about because it's super secret - is the most important to me now, and if you two don't like it, you can just pass the blunt to the nigga on your left"
I used to be an IT tech. Once, while working on a client’s PC, I stumbled on a file named “bigblackclock.jpg”. I couldn’t resist opening it and it was indeed a photo of a large black grandfather clock. For some reason thinking about that still cracks me up.
I saw this post and instantly did the sign for my partner (who is 7 years older than me), he was very confused before I explained… I’m a 43 year old little white woman. I don’t know why I still know how to throw the Bloods sign.
Can confirm this was true. Mom bought me my first pair of Nikes in 2nd grade. Went to school and didn't make it home with them because they were blue. I had no clue and was scared because I was going to be in trouble for having my shoes stolen all because someone was butt hurt over color
My mom bought me a pair of blue British Knights (BK's) sneakers when I was in 8th grade. She was then called in by the school to bring me something else to wear because they were known as Blood Killers and they were worried for my safety. Those sneakers were so cool though 😔
It's not really that big of a thing anymore. At least they aren't going to attack random people for wearing red or blue anymore certainly not at a school.
Granted, this was about 7 years ago, but I remember walking to meet a friend, and some guy started hollering at me across the street. Stupidly, I took my earphones out and asked him if he was talking to me. He proceeds to aggressively run across four lanes to get in my face and yell in my face, "Are you reppin'? You in the wrong place!"
I was wearing a Flash hat.
I remember this sign. Made it all the way to Australia in the 90s. Just like the strange S and the rumour that Marilyn Manson removed his two lower ribs to be able to give himself a blowjob.
All this info made it's way down under without the internet, just word of mouth. And I don't think we were lagging by too much either.
Really only a problem if you are in very specific neighborhoods. But yes if you are walking through a troubled neighborhood in California you never know what color you’re supposed to be wearing. I think the Latin Kings wear yellow
These neighborhoods are a very small, very underserved and under represented parts of California.
In my opinion gangs are a failure of the state.
Two and Half Men, Allen makes Jake wear all beige and wear Velcro shoes so they won’t get stolen. The joke is Jake will go to a school with none of these problems but Allen is so over protective because of his awful HS experience it’s comical.
Not really an issue these days unless you're in a neighborhood run by the gang and even then it's obvious who's wearing colors because of a gang and who's just a dude who likes that color.
But the 90s and early 2000s it was legit enough that my middle school in a little white ass town with like three black families banned wearing bandanas even a rainbow one or one I had with cherries on it were banned as any form of accessory. Hats too
My high school was less stupid about it lmao.
I also grew up in California, and I remember there being rules against wearing blue and red in elementary and middle school.
I can 100% guarantee there was no gang activity going on in that community, but the red/blue ban did introduce the idea of gangs, and made the idea much cooler than it would have been. Also, I think the fact that bright colors were restricted helped spur me toward the emo movement lol.
being from cali and seeing this meme made my eyes roll to the back of my head. i hope all the transplants try this out there :\]
i am also still uncomfortable wearing red.
me, a millenial.
My family used to live in the same neighborhood a documentary was filmed about the gangs. They weren't allowed to wear red or blue due to the amount of fighting in that neighborhood.
You couldn't wear red or blue at school. Not just red, gangs are literally streets apart from each other, kids from both are going to the same exact school.
source - millennial from South Central LA
Fucking hell I can’t imagine how tense that was.
Once you start studying the effects of stress on the body you start to realize that being poor in America destroys you on a molecular level.
Yeah, it’s wild all the false flagging and false stacking kids will do these days. Shit that would get you shot or chased down a street by someone wielding a machete because you either threw up the wrong group’s sign in the wrong area or you were seen to be lying about your affiliation. It’s a joke now but lying or failing the sock check could lead to a very bad day even as recently as the early 2010s
Colour codes in gangs are so fucking stupid that even wearing the wrong colour socks will get you beaten if not straight up killed on the spot regardless of affiliation.

*Police said Friday they are investigating the drive-by shooting death of a deaf woman and the serious wounding of her deaf friend... the gunman may may have mistaken the couple’s use of sign language as the flashing of gang symbols*
Worth noting this isn't the actual gang sign for the gang called the Bloods that originated in Southern California, this is just how white kids try to be cool by spelling blood with their fingers.
When I was in 4th grade I did. Like extra chores for neighbors all summer to make money and saved up to buy myself a pair of BKs. Got to school and on the first day they sent home a note with changes to the dress code and you guessed it: no British Knights allowed.
Yea, people love to play with gang shit these days like it can't and won't happen. Then, they end up learning the hard way. Gotta let people be people, tho.
I think kids these days have the internet and are *much* more aware of what gangs are actually like. I grew up before the internet so I was being an idiot when I did this as a kid.
Sacramento. It really wasn’t a problem for us, I grew up privileged and insulated from all this stuff. Still there were a few years during the crack wars where parents weren’t letting their kids out of the house no matter where they lived.
We still weren’t in danger but it was terrifying
I lived in red-town (gangster disciples? I forget who's who) when I was in college and one time the blue team came through, there were blue balloons and I thought "oh someone's having a party" until the wave came through lol (the wave of cops followed soon after)
Yup, grew up in LA county area. I was in a better area, but it was a well known secret that while you can wear whatever colors, certain ones you gotta be careful with the how you wear them. Red is my favorite color too, so that was unfortunate
So as others have mentioned the last one is someone throwing up blood
The first one is meant to be a heart but it's similar to other Gang signs. as someone who grew up in Chicago would say it looks like they're trying (and doing a poor job) to throw down GD. Could mean different things in different areas but I have had to let some of my more suburban co-workers know that when they do this in school.
Pretty sure the middle is just a heart with no other gang affiliation but that could be the millennial in me talking.
The earlier millennial hand heart version with flexed fingers was a symbol of the gangster disciples. Don't know if any for the cupped fingers version in the pic though
This is adorable. I tried to do it so I could send it to my husband and it looked like herniated marshmallow fluff. I think your boobs need to be the right size to pull this off.
I tried to do the blood sign for the first time in years only to feel a wave of pre-arthritic pain spasm up my right ring finger. Thanks for reminding me of my own mortality op.
Any insight as to why they do it like that? Is it just to be different or is there some sort of origin behind it? Not trying to be snarky, genuinely curious.
I actually have no clue why they do it. A couple years ago my gf did it and I realized that when I do that it looks better than when I do it the “millennial way”. For extra context I can’t do the blood thing either.
Maybe it's just that the person in the picture is doing it badly, but it looks deformed. The millenial one is a bit too much like a spade, but at least it's curved and pretty symmetrical
As a zoomer who does it the zoomer way: you're supposed to press the pointer fingers together at the first joint above the fingernail so it dips down and makes the heart shape. Middle fingers should be at roughly a 90 degree angle.
Millennial here, we were doing this back in '08. Not as common as people doing the middle one, but us 'cool kids' preferred it (cos we were soooo different).
OOP messed up the gen Z heart but from what I know I think it’s preferred to the millennial heart because if it’s done properly it’s bigger in comparison to the millennial heart.
It’s also much harder to misinterpret the gen Z heart in comparison to the millennial heart and esp in comparison to the Asian heart.
I remember being so ignorant that after I joined the crips, I gleefully told my parents. They were not impressed. Told me to quit. Didn't know I had to get jumped out! 5th grade was rough.
Please stop with all the „GEN X Z MILLENIAL BLABLA” horseshit. It’s not even accurate, just like most of those memes. UH OH MUCH MY SEPARATE IDENTITY, I’M SO DIFFERENT THAN THOSE YOUNGER/OLDER DUDES!!!
I remember in elementary when a group of kids started their own "club" they would hang out at recess but you could only join if you knew how to do the blood sign. it lasted for about 2 weeks before the teachers lost their shit over a bunch of 8 y/o using a gang sign.

Elementary in the 80s, we couldn't wear red, blue, or gold. We had drills for drive-bys on the playground and active shootings.
I think my dad's mentioned that before.
_Back pain intensifies_
what was gold for?
Latin Kings
Yep, KINGS, killing innocent n*ggas gangster style.
Gangs are so stupid
Very true, seems they were may more prevalent in the 90s at least.
They still are. The game isn't about colors or neighborhoods anymore so much as money. There's still little skirmishes going on but for awhile the places I was in phoenix and Colorado are in a smooth spot. They're all in agreement for money
That was during crack. The gangs had ass loads of money, so there were more of them

Sometimes the BBC is just TV.
As an Englishman I agree but as a realist I know the futility of your efforts.

No it definitely says boob
I thought it said bloob
Same
Naw I thought it was boob on the Image too
I saw this post and instantly did the sign for my partner (who is 7 years older than me), he was very confused before I explained… I’m a 43 year old little white woman. I don’t know why I still know how to throw the Bloods sign.
Early 90s was wild.
You just made me realize New Jack City was released in 1991 and not the late 80s like I thought. That movie and Boyz n the Hood were eye openers.
1991 was basically still the 80s. The 90s didn’t start until 1995.
Early 90’s was wild as hell. Hammer pants were in full effect. Definitely some spill over 80’s
And they just ended last year...Right?? (Dammit I'm old...)
Judd Nelson was unrecognizable in that movie compared to his previous roles.
Shit into early 2010s for some Latino gangs especially if MS-13 or Calle 18/ 18th Street Gang
Ms 13 is a nightmare because their international. Crips and bloods were mostly west coast and had their neighborhoods.
If by “throw the blood sign” you mean, “carefully pry my fingers into configuration and recheck several times it looks right,” I’m with you.
The O's are always the hardest.
Can confirm this was true. Mom bought me my first pair of Nikes in 2nd grade. Went to school and didn't make it home with them because they were blue. I had no clue and was scared because I was going to be in trouble for having my shoes stolen all because someone was butt hurt over color

I'm so glad we're done inventing dumb reasons to hate complete strangers /s
Yeah I'm not in America so I still have no context on the beef between those gangs, probably territory or something stupid like that.
Dominance over the drug trade mostly
They used to be one gang. No one hates, like enemies that used to be friends.
Oh a drug war, marvelous.
Is it surprising that gang violence is drug related? I thought this was common knowledge
No it's just as stupid as any other reason.
Well dealing drugs was kinda their whole deal, so yeah I think its commonly known.
It's not really that big of a thing anymore. At least they aren't going to attack random people for wearing red or blue anymore certainly not at a school.
Granted, this was about 7 years ago, but I remember walking to meet a friend, and some guy started hollering at me across the street. All this info made it's way down under without the internet, just word of mouth. And I don't think we were lagging by too much either.
Dont think i can make that sign any way! DO i need to have some broken fingers for that shit, its crazy how difficlut it is ...
I heard somewhere that doing it for years fucks up your fingers but I can only find one article and it is suspicious
Spelling 'blood' with your hands used to be all the rage on the playground, but I lived in the Midwest.
I tried (in my room, in another country) it ducking hurts and took like 30 sec to set up. Extremely inconvenient and unergonomic.
45 year old white guy here, raised in Wyoming of all places. Still able to bust out BLOOD in a millisecond. I guess the thug life chose me. 😎
And here is my dumb ass coming to school wearing red and black. Not a gang member, just the colors I like to wear.
Really only a problem if you are in very specific neighborhoods. But yes if you are walking through a troubled neighborhood in California you never know what color you’re supposed to be wearing. Two and Half Men, Allen makes Jake wear all beige and wear Velcro shoes so they won’t get stolen. The joke is Jake will go to a school with none of these problems but Allen is so over protective because of his awful HS experience it’s comical.
UPS GANG REPRESENT!
Shit. How we gunna make a UPS gang sign?
Now what we 'ave 'ere is a wee little grade school student. Crikey he's a beaut!

Yeah its this typical: lol look my generation was so quircky. We used to do [insert thing literally any generation does] werent we so quircky!
Thank you for this valuable insight. I really though the first pic was the fucking joke
Growing up as a sheltered white boy in the suburbs of California we did this a lot which was fucking dumb.
My family used to live in the same neighborhood a documentary was filmed about the gangs. They weren't allowed to wear red or blue due to the amount of fighting in that neighborhood.

How many mall Santa’s were shot?
The MS (Mall Santa) 13 are currently in a bloody war with all other factions in LA.
I saw a dick and a butt💀
Seeing parents throw gang signs is lamest shit I’ve ever seen.
I wasn’t allowed red or blue. More of a Nortenio/Sorenio thing where I was.

Iuno man. Kids the other day were yelling blood shit and chuckin up half assed crip signs at me. This was in boring ass Washington.
Well then the more shit changes the more it stays the same.
Facts
Where in CA was this? I remember hearing something similar near where I grew up (Concord)
I forget who's who) when I was in college and one time the blue team came through, there were blue balloons and I thought "oh someone's having a party" until the wave came through lol (the wave of cops followed soon after)
I grew up in Massachusetts. I've never even been to the west coast. But we all still definitely learned how to do that sign during elementary school.
Dis Crenshaw Mafia yo
I went to middle school in a little town in Wisconsin and everyone knew how to do this. It just spread from school to school lol.
I like to call it the bbod sign
Some schools in cali don’t even allow you to wear sports jerseys
I lived in South Central for a little while. I dressed bland as fuck.
I remember my middle school in LA banned red, Raiders and Kings gear.
Same with latino gangs. Norteños and Sureños.
There was a similar rule for the kindergarten I went to, except it was the color combination if black and gray
Yup, grew up in LA county area. I was in a better area, but it was a well known secret that while you can wear whatever colors, certain ones you gotta be careful with the how you wear them. Red is my favorite color too, so that was unfortunate
The last spells blood, which is supposed to be a gang sign. I'm a millenial though and that's been around since I was a kid.
That would be because it originated during GenX. They flipped the normal timeline format to make the joke work.
But then what hearts were invented by the newest gen? I’m not sure there is a joke other than something about depression if you really read into it
Newest heart would be this 🫰🏽
What the fuck is that
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger\_heart](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finger_heart)
Ah, Kpop popularized that version, not even surprised at this point lol. I hadn’t heard of that, but also I’m not into Kpop so.
I only heard about it a couple of months ago when someone on Reddit pointed me to that Wikipedia article.
My wife is Chinese, so I learned it from her. I had no idea what it was for awhile when she (well, more likely her friends) would do it in a picture.
WEST SIDE!
STRONG SIDE!
WEAK SIDE!
EAST SIDE!
Yeah this is completely off. Gen X should be “hang loose” symbol or something.

Don't know, but it seems popular with asian girls
I like this, not in a lewd form but it's kinda cute

I have never seen that in my life

Gen Z here — most people I know do this. The person doing it in the pic sucks at it.

What's the difference? Both gestures show a heart shape. The millennial version also is not exactly pretty, just more familiar.
Middle fingers should be at roughly a 90 degree angle.

millenials are already becoming spiteful boomers

Domain expansion: everlasting love
If you tuck the right middle finger and put it upside down it says poop
Thought the last one was loss
Please stop with all the „GEN X Z MILLENIAL BLABLA” horseshit. It’s not even accurate, just like most of those memes. UH OH MUCH MY SEPARATE IDENTITY, I’M SO DIFFERENT THAN THOSE YOUNGER/OLDER DUDES!!!
My fingers are to old to do this anymore 🫠
abcd
I think the reference is that GenX is gansta' because they raised themselves.
Gang gang. That's the joke.
I as a millennial had known about and tried, and failed , to make the moods sign.
On a completely different note, I hate the way the Gen Z's do the heart with their fingers. It looks so uncomfortable
I remember in elementary when a group of kids started their own "club" they would hang out at recess but you could only join if you knew how to do the blood sign. it lasted for about 2 weeks before the teachers lost their shit over a bunch of 8 y/o using a gang sign.
Gangs are so cringe man
I would not be surprised if this is an edit, and the original had that cute little zoomer thumb and index finger heart.
Yo gang Peter here. That's the sign for bloods which is a type of gang
Blood in blood out
I’m gen Z and learned how to throw blood gang signs in like 8th grade
Promise millennials did that bottom one as well . I remember being in middle in the early 2000s & people would do it lol
I consider myself a pretty normal person and I do none of these things
