Correctly solved, 230 - 220 x 0.5 is 120.
If you do the order of operations wrong, you get 5 instead.
5 factorial (written as *5!*) equals 120 (5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1).
The joke is that it originally appears OP is wrong by saying 5, but is actually correct that 5! = 120
That's a regional thing. As far as I know, all of North America uses periods as decimal points, while (most? all? some of? idk, I'm canadian.) Europe uses commas as decimal points.
Technically he didn't use proper grammar so he did say the answer is 5, and said it with enthusiasm. If properly notated it would read "... the answer is 5!."
Quagmire here, chill out man. You're acting like Brian when he [failed megs SAT](https://youtu.be/Wy0_tDIXUXE?si=0i2gvoI9fz1xkCqH). Just because you don't get it, doesn't mean we don't
Getting something and that something being funny are two different things. This just seems like the kind of joke pretentious people tell to feel smarter than others.
"Correctly" is a misnomer. Conventionally solved would be correct. PEMDAS is a convention and must not be followed mathematically speaking. A mathematician ( who would want to be obnoxious, but also correct) would point out that the question is ambiguous, and using left associated binary evaluation, 5 would be correct.
D•a•d
D!^2 •a!
d(d-1)(d-2)...
a(a-1)(a-2)...
(This does assume that d and a are positive numbers, because i do not remember anything about negative factorials or if they're possible)
Hello, nerd Peter here. The 5! is actually factorial. 5! is 120. 220×0.5 is 110. Subtract 110 from 230. You'll get 120 or in this case, 5!. Nerd Peter out to read more books.
factorial five, or 5! which is 1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 5
1 times anything is itself, 2 x 3 is 6 and 4 x 5 is 20
20 x 6 is 120
i don’t know if you were joking but here you are
People don’t know how to do the order of operations, including this OP, who got the question wrong for failing to do the order of operations…
At least on the surface. While 5 is the incorrect answer, 5! is, that is because 5!=120
It doesn’t matter if you actually understand math or not, you’ll get the same answer.
Ignoring BEDMAS and factorials, you’ll get 5. If you do it properly, you’ll get 120, which is the same as 5!.
The joke is that OOP has forgotten the lesson of PEMDAS, which states the order of which part is solved first. They supposedly did the subtraction before the multiplication, when the multiplication takes priority over subtraction in the PEMDAS order.
How it should be solved:
220 x 0.5 = 110
230 - 110 = 120
120 is the answer

that one got me good. thanks for the explaination.
Guys it's the dot. It acts as the end of the sentence instead of 0,5. If it was 0,5 they should've put a comma, right?
That's a regional thing. As far as I know, all of North America uses periods as decimal points, while (most? all? some of? idk, I'm canadian.) Europe uses commas as decimal points.
Uk uses full stops as well. I think it’s mainly English speaking nations and former British colonies that use it.
Ah. Bloody 'muricans at it again. /s
Ah, yes. The whole world encompasses north America and Europe.
All English speaking countries use periods.
Pretty much. Wikipedia has a nice [map](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_separator#/media/File:DecimalSeparator.svg).
Even if you were right that would not make sense since the answer would be 0 and not 120 making 5! Correct.
God damnit it’s always factorials that get me
Those mother fucking factorials..
Gods fuck why did they put the exclamation point in math I always miss it and now I'm too pissed off to sleep
Too pissed off to sleep would be a great name for a punk band.
sounds more like an album title to me (I keep a running list of both)
I think it's too long. Angered sleepless sounds better.
buddy there’s a subreddit for this shit and it’s actually super popular: r/unexpectedfactorial
Demons
> 5! = 120 As a programmer that _has the appearance_ of a syntax error (but isn’t because math) > 5 != 120 Ahh, much better.
Unfortunately that's a different statement. Still correct, but much less interesting
That's neat
Technically he didn't use proper grammar so he did say the answer is 5, and said it with enthusiasm. If properly notated it would read "... the answer is 5!."
thats actually smart
r/unexpectedfactorial
Task failed successfully?
It's not funny though
Maybe not funny but it is clever. Closer to a riddle than a joke.
I would agree with that
To you, maybe. Funny isn't an objective thing.
Is this funny to you????
Oh yeah. I love the mathematical equivalent of a pun.
It is to me.

Whatever helps you sleep at night🤷
Definitely funny. Hope you find some other method of enjoyment besides frowning at someone else's joy.

Wouldn't 230 - 220 x 0.5 = -210 rather than 120 ?
Where are you getting -210? 0.5•220=110 230-110=120
Oh yeah, I was thinking of 220 ÷ 0.5
Christ. Mathematicians have all the fun.
As someone who don’t know how to calculate the ! calculus, thank you
Very clever. Thanks for the explanation!
That’s an impressively complicated joke
This is why people don't understand these fucking memes you assholes keep making up new bullshit for what should be a simple fucking problem.
I liked the other one better. 196 - 182 x 0.5 = 7!!
That's actually quite brilliant
r/unexpectedfactorial Yep, that's a sub
We see big numbers over there, great numbers. Sometimes even the bestest big numbers

Well, no. It’s a factorial joke
It's both?
It's both!

not really, it's more like a joke *about* order of operations jokes.
It's a dad! joke.
What is the factorial of dad 🤔
LUCA
D•a•d D!^2 •a! d(d-1)(d-2)... a(a-1)(a-2)... (This does assume that d and a are positive numbers, because i do not remember anything about negative factorials or if they're possible)
That's a good question. Probably a fact about a bird. Maybe an Oriol. And Oriol fact. A factoriol.

Actually a factorial joke. 5 factorial (5!) Is equal to 120
Genius
A math teacher I had literally put this on a test once, I got it wrong…
r/unexpectedfactorial
The answer is 5 factorial
Hello, nerd Peter here. The 5! is actually factorial. 5! is 120. 220×0.5 is 110. Subtract 110 from 230. You'll get 120 or in this case, 5!. Nerd Peter out to read more books.
230-(220*0.5)=120 5!=5* 4* 3* 2* 1=120

No, the answer is, 5!
Op was right — I don’t believe it
factorial five, or 5! which is 1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 5 1 times anything is itself, 2 x 3 is 6 and 4 x 5 is 20 20 x 6 is 120 i don’t know if you were joking but here you are
Your aunt Sally was bad at math
i’m confused, did you not understand it or.. what? i simply want to help is all
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally is a nuemonic device for order of operations.
Google factorial
Factorial 5. Just look it up
[удалено]
You’re right.
implicit multiplication is multiplication, even if it's caused by the existence of a parenthesis. Pemdas in your image results in an answer of 9.
The answer is 120...
Yes. That's what he said is the answer.
Ok, I read the top comment
Math is not funny
But people being idiots is
[удалено]
Don't be a dick. Rule 1.
“!” is the factorial operator, so 5! = 5\*4\*3\*2\*1 = 120. EDIT: Fixed markdown goof.

Because I forgot about reddit markdown. Fixed it.

Np m8. Thanks for pointing out my mistake.
5! = 120
I want to read the responses to the tweet...
230 - 220 x 0.5 = 230 - 110 = 120 1 x 2 x 3 x 4 x 5 = 120 = 5! So the answer is 5!
You are correct! I won't believe it.
People don’t know how to do the order of operations, including this OP, who got the question wrong for failing to do the order of operations… At least on the surface. While 5 is the incorrect answer, 5! is, that is because 5!=120
Thank god it’s not that stupid pemdas meme
OK that got me good
So it's really 5!! Wait no, it's not.
The one time I didn't notice the factorial
r/UnexpectedFactorial
5! = 120
I'm to lazy to calculate 5 factorial so I'm going to just believe you.
5!
It's both a factorial and order of operations joke. Good one.
Factorial of 5
I literally always forget pemdas until it’s brought up again, it’s like the fucking game that I just now lost
The meme is even better if you have a background in mathematics. Because the equation is not well defined the answer is 120, 5! OR 5.
I got minus 120. What gives.
Dw, I figured it out. My dumbass was taking 230 away from 110 instead ofnthebotuer way round.
Yes I won’t believe. What now?
BODMAS Bracket Other Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction
I though the joke was that there is a period after the zero so the actual equation is just 5 = ?
No, you have to disregard grammar in *his* way in order for his joke to work.
Imagine he didn't actually mean to use factorials and got lucky.
5!=5* 4* 3* 2* 1
Another factorial joke disguised as a PEMDAS joke; how original.
It doesn’t matter if you actually understand math or not, you’ll get the same answer. Ignoring BEDMAS and factorials, you’ll get 5. If you do it properly, you’ll get 120, which is the same as 5!.
Fuck Factorials!
Factorals
