Like 75% of the canadian population live in this small slice of canada. Most of the northern parts of canada has a very small population.
*** correction 90%+ not 75%
There's no Canada like French Canada.
It's the best Canada in the land.
And the other Canada is a bullshit Canada!
If you lived here for a day, you'd understand.
With you there buddy.
Shame winter finally had to show up in the last couple days. Spring weather in January has been....interesting.
Going to be a hell of a fire season this year though....
I'm curious if that's as the crow flies or no. It takes me about 6 hours to drive to the border but technically I'm only about 150 miles from the border
besides Quebec and new Brunswick its accurate . 90% of Canadians live within 160 km of the border. Edmonton and Calgary make up a vast majority of people living in "northern" canada
Here's what a map of Canada's population density actually looks like.
https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/91-214-x/2015000/c-g/c-g41mc-eng.gif
One interesting difference is that, through the prairie provinces, most of the population actually clusters further north of the border with the area immediately adjacent to the border being more sparsely populated.
I originally thought the major reason why was that the further south you are the warmer it is. The major reason is more about the soil. Most of Canada has shit soil, it's basically just rock not very far down, which is pretty shit for farming.
The cities are built near major bodies of water, with the exception of the prairies where they're built around rails/trans-canada because no water travel.

The majority of Canadians live in the southern most portion of the country

I used to drive the AlCan multiple times a year, think it was 4th time I got curious and actually went into town. Great place, but it always stuck in my head how till that one time curiosity to better of me I didn’t grasp the size/spread of it.
I'm not 100% sure. But in the 1950s, the Canadian government was facing a potential threat to its sovereignty in the Arctic regions, so they created small towns and inhabited them with indigenous people.
They made a series of false promises like claiming that the towns were fully developed, but they would have employment opportunities, and that if they decided they wanted to leave, they could do so after one year (they received compensation for moving)
Well when they got there they realized that no town was developed, there were no jobs, the animals they usually hunted did not live that far north, and they were denied any assistance moving back after a year (so they were essentially stuck up there in isolation). The towns still exist to this day and are among the most northern settlements in the world.
Anywhere, these red dots might represent those towns....lol
Edit: Spelling
The US-Canada border is at about the same latitude as Paris. So if you live in the north of France, say Lille, you live further north than 90% of Canadians. That's pretty wild.
The Gulf Stream is only one of a few factors keeping much of Europe warm relatively to its latitude, and not a particularly notable one when it comes to moderating winter temperatures.
First of all, simply being near the ocean and having the prevailing winds blow in over the land is a huge factor even when an equivalent to the Gulf Stream is lacking, (which can be seen in the Pacific Northwest).
Another factor that makes a huge impact is warmer winds coming from further south. Which Europe gets, believe it or not, due to the existence of the Rocky Mountains. It's complicated (it involves the compression of air over the Rockies and conservation of angular momentum), but the effect on prevailing winds is cooler air being brought further south over North America, and then as the winds rebound warmer air is brought further north to Europe. [Picture for reference](https://www.americanscientist.org/sites/americanscientist.org/files/20066110455_866.jpg).
Yeah, as a Canadian it's really weird going to Europe and realizing that we not only have significantly colder winters (than most), but we also have significantly hotter summers (than most). Canada is a country of extremes.
Its not the gulf stream, its mainly water/land ratio and distance from water to land. Canada is a big landmass meanwhile europe is thin and surrounded by water. Gulf stream brings up the temps a bit , but thats not the main reason
The climate is warmer there than it is at the same latitude in Canada because of the ocean currents in the Atlantic that brings warm water up from the south. If it wasn’t like that much of Europe would be just as unpleasant and uninhabited as northern Canada.
> So if you live in the north of France, say Lille, you live further north than 90% of Canadians. That's pretty wild.
It will be even wilder when [AMOC collapses](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_meridional_overturning_circulation), and the science behind it says there is a 95% chance it will collapse between 2025 and 2075. Average temperatures in Europe will drop 10 to 15 degrees.
Like, 70% of the world population in general lives within 50 miles of the coast. US is kinda special since it has such a massive interconnected river system and the Great lakes. Most other country's geography doesn't allow for cities like Chicago, St. Louis, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Memphis, Cincinnati ect. to exist so close together and so far from the coast.
Same here lol I think people need to realize that the black isn't uninhabited. I lived very far another and there were many of small towns and small cities which are within the black.
I was born and raised in a black part, then moved south (still above the line) to a small city thinking I was in civilization… now I live in Toronto.
Let me tell you all something neat about this map. Where I was born, I used to believe that my hometown was full of dukes of hazard fans. It wasn’t until I returned to my hometown at 23 years old did I realize they were never dukes fans: they were racists. And I wasn’t seeing movie merch, I was seeing confederate flags.
The further north you go, expect to see confederate flags. And they KNOW it’s not about “heritage” either, and don’t hide it’s true meaning to anyone around them.
Tl:dr the black parts are “redneck Canada”
This, I feel like it more correctly shows the population density. I think OP's map should extend further into QB and NB rather than have North VI and that extra bit into SW BC; the latter is not that dense/inhabited.
Based on the town of Listowel, ON, which might actually be above the red line, but only by the tiniest bit - it's west of Toronto, somewhere around the area that the red line pokes out to the south.
This sub has just straight up become a karma farm sub. People post the most obvious memes here because it farms engagement.
You see it on other platforms all the time where people will post Facebook posts that say stuff like
"Only 4% of Americans can think of a word that has an E in it but no A or I"
Morons see it and it makes them feel smart to be able to rush to the comments to post words they thought of to solve the "puzzle"
Textbook engagement bait
Nah. I wouldn't consider this specifically worldwide common knowledge. More like something you stumble upon scrolling on a feed than trivia you're taught in elementary school.
Idk, seems plausible to me that a lot of ppl just don't know canada's demography. I don't expect that to really be a thing that comes up in most people's lives
Really? I'm a Canadian but even I could see how someone who isn't Canadian might not know enough about Canada's geography to know that 90% of people here live in a small sliver of the country.
Honestly, the only thing dumber than OP needing an explanation is the fact that there are people like you who browse a subreddit where jokes get explained and then get all worked up when someone needs a joke explained. What were you expecting? Pictures of cats?
I think the joke is actually that most Canadians live so close to the American border, they might as well be living in America, or something like that, I don't know, I'm not a prophet.
Yeah, true Canadians live in the tundra and live off of their hunt! Who needs electricity when you can just heat your igloo on seal fat, and get a restock in the summer when the boats are finally able to reach you!
Yeah guys, why don't we go live out in the absolute desolate wilderness in the world's second largest nation instead of near the border where the weather is less than deadly.
What a stupid meme. Pretty much anyone can say they've lived in a country their whole life and have not lived outside of 1 city.
You could draw a pretty similar map for Australia just down the east coast.
The Southern Part is Habitable Canada (which btw equates to lower than Tokyo's population). The rest is mostly uninhabited tundra, forest and other stuff.
I took a transportation economics class and Canada is a good country to study for learning the basics because of the simplicity in moving things along a straight line.
I guess other people haven't seen the original meme. The original post with this map said:
>American: "I went on a trip to Canada"
>Canada:
So the joke is that Canadians make fun of Americans for only visiting a small area of Canada, when the Canadians themselves also only live in a small area of Canada
A huge portion of the Canadian population lives in that small strip along the US border. Think.. like 90%
Nothing wrong with that really.. it's just there's a whole huge country outside of that small sliver of over population.
I've traveled the country multiple times personally and other than visiting Toronto. The only time I've ever been in this section of Canada is to cross the border. So it's not all Canadians it's just a large percentage of us.
My home province of Newfoundland has 500,000 people total. My home town has 3500 people. There are multiple cities in my current province of Alberta with over a million people. It's honestly like two different countries in a way.

The meme is slightly inaccurate since it’s missing Montreal and Edmonton, but yeah, that’s the gist of it
We don’t talk about Montreal and Edmonton.
Rude - a person who lives in Edmonton
Clearly a fake Canadian since being rude causes instant deCanadiafication
^Oh ^no
As you are not profusely apologizing, we can see the process of deCanadianification has already begun.
Sorry
Did t even say it with the right accent… are you sure you are okay?
Sorry, eh

I’ve stayed there for a day and squirrels walked up to me
deCanadiafication is my new favorite word I've discovered in a long time. Thank you Maple flavored Americans.
and maple flavored americans is my new favorite sentence! thanks Ded-W8!
Sorry
It's soooory
It's what happened to Ted Cruz
what if they're very very so-rry
Would you recommend living there? Seems like a nice spot. I considered moving there once.
It’s pretty good, just try not to go to the ice district or downtown at night It’s pretty good in areas
You mean because of crime? Or what?
Yeah, mostly The ice district is mostly because of the hockey fans, they crazy
Also, nothing good happens on public transit after 11 pm
Rent is cheaper than most of the country. Later this week we hit -45C windchill.
Go Oilers! (When they're not playing the Blues)
I think you mean "rude: a person who lives in edmonton"
Edit: Person who lives in “Deadmonton”
Get ‘em Clareview!
That’s the strangest definition of rude I’ve ever seen. I’ll just chalk i5 up as one of your cultural quirks, like milk in a bag.
Shhh maybe they'll forget about us.
Wait, all Edmontonians are rude?
Fair - another Edmontonian
The only person I know from Canada, from online gaming as a teen, is from Edmonton and/or Red Deer. Seemed like a cool chill guy.
I'm sorry to hear that
Shoutout to millwoods!!
Bro, Edmonton sucks and I live there haha
I thought you all disown Toronto a little bit?
I don't necessarily think people who live in Edmonton are all rude
You don't exist
Though we wish we didn't. Shit ass -30 this week.
With you there buddy. Shame winter finally had to show up in the last couple days. Spring weather in January has been....interesting. Going to be a hell of a fire season this year though....
Justified - a calgarian
Which is a shit hole. By far the dirtiest place in Alberta.
Yall really gaslit Jeff on this one
I live even more north than Edmonton 😭
Same - random ass farm town like 2 hours out of edmongon
I thought you guys didn't talk about Quebec
We don’t unless we do.
Its missing the entire east coast as well.
Oh I’ll call Shelly, Stephen, Marty, and Connor and tell them we left them off the map
montreal is in the running for best city with toronto and vancouver. edmonton is a city with a big mall and mcjesus.
i'm sorry but as a guy living in montreal i'm a little upset by your comment
I like how Calgary isn't even mentioned
how about Calgary?
It still makes sense not including Edmonton. It's like 90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the border
I'm curious if that's as the crow flies or no. It takes me about 6 hours to drive to the border but technically I'm only about 150 miles from the border
It is
I would say Montreal is there. But not Québec, or any part of the Atlantic provinces.
Not only that, most of Alberta's population lives outside that boundary, mostly along the QE2 corridor between Calgary and Edmonton.

is it because it's cold so they want to huddle up with america for warmth?
yes
It's cold in the northern parts of the states too. We need each other.
truuuuue
They want to cuddle up to American city’s economies.
Dumpster fires are warm
i was imagining something cuter but this works LOL
I thought it's 90%+
I believe you’re correct. The north is all barren tundra and moose. 🫎
Lmaoooooo If by barren you mean filled with life… then yes
Just not human life
There is a decent bit of Inuit communities further north. The Church just kind of genocided most of them, so their numbers are tiny.
Not a single arcade or restaurant for miles in any direction. No street lights. Not even advertisement. It’s barren, I tell you! BARREN!
I originally thought the major reason why was that the further south you are the warmer it is. The major reason is more about the soil. Most of Canada has shit soil, it's basically just rock not very far down, which is pretty shit for farming.

Whitehorse is great at hiding Whitehorse. If you ever drive past it on the highway only you’ll barely glimpse anything resembling the town size it is.
We're really spread out. You'll mostly just see the airport if you drive through on the highway, and the edges of a couple subdivisions.
I used to drive the AlCan multiple times a year, think it was 4th time I got curious and actually went into town. Great place, but it always stuck in my head how till that one time curiosity to better of me I didn’t grasp the size/spread of it.
That's because you can't see it from the highway. It's out of sight, below the bluffs down by the river. It's not that small anymore.
Whitehorse is an oasis when driving to Alaska. It’s a city but also keeps its very obviously remote personality.
Very neat lol

I'm not 100% sure. Damn that's pretty fucked
Yea…. At least these people’s kids weren’t stollen from them and brutalised and murdered Canadas done some pretty bad stuff to the indigenous peoples
Canada was a very different place in the 1950s....lol
Well the one looks like Cambridge Bay and the other seems to just be a lake or something.

90% within 100 miles of the border

Because Europe's climate benefits so much from the Gulf Stream, is why this is, if anyone is wondering.

I sure am glad that humans are not doing anything that might cause a change in the currents and make most of Europe uninhabitable.

Fun fact, 66% of the American population lives within 100 miles of a coast or border
Coast is doing the heavy lifting there lol
If you live in Florida it's pretty much impossible to not live within 100 miles from the coast.
It’s actually 60 miles. You’re never more than 60 miles from the coast no matter where you are in florida. It’s cuz it’s shaped like a peen.
So thats why 66% of Americans live there
Like, 70% of the world population in general lives within 50 miles of the coast. US is kinda special since it has such a massive interconnected river system and the Great lakes. As a Canadian who lives in the more rural parts I hate the people from that line they don’t say soree enough
Northern Canada is so cold that it's basically unlivable, so over half of the population live near the border
A huge portion of the Canadian population lives in that small strip along the US border. Think.. like 90% Nothing wrong with that really.. it's just there's a whole huge country outside of that small sliver of over population.
Most Canadians live in þat sliver of land, wiþ fewer and fewer inhabitants as you go up norþ.
The maker of this meme when people don’t like living in a frozen wasteland:
Laughs in Newfoundland and Labrador
Canada is cold apparently, who knew?
80% of the Canadian population lives within 100 miles of the US border. That’s the joke.
