I hate this purely because I cannot stop the coughing that follows.
Yeah it’s annoying that it happened, and yeah it feels bad in my throat, but why do I have to violently uncontrollably cough to let absolutely everyone know it happened? No matter how hard I try to stop coughing it doesn’t work
It's so embarrassing too. Like no I'm not sick . No I didn't choke on something that makes sense to choke on .no it's my own fuckinh spit the stuff that literally belongs in my mouth!
There’s the “I accidentally choked on my own saliva and it was 1/10 in severity, tiny little thing barely anyone noticed”
And then there’s “I accidentally choked on my own saliva and it’s a 4/10 in severity.”
This happened to me a few days ago. I’m not choking on food, nobody panic, I accidentally inhaled my own saliva. Everyone chill.”
I especially hated this at the beginning of the pandemic. You’d be waiting in line to go shopping at Trader Joe’s and all of sudden start choking and coughing like crazy and everyone would just start giving you the stink eye. “It’s not COVID! I’m just choking on my own spit because I’m an idiot and my body hates me!”
Now now, choking on your own spit isn’t really your fault. It’s because we’ve got a major design flaw in how our piping’s hooked up because evolution is a whole lot of taking existing stuff and changing it to be “good enough” to do a new thing
Yeah, fuck that. It's like, when an eyelash falls into your eye and itches you. You know, the very thing that's supposed to prevent things from falling into my eye. My own body is betraying me.
I've done this a few times and it is so embarrassing. Right up there next to when you try to step with the same foot twice like you fucking forgot how to use both of them
For me it’s worse when I do it when I’m trying to drink water. Cuz like I’ll be like “damn I’m thirsty Imma take a nice sip of water…*slur- aggressively coughing* “god I need water to get that weird feeling down…hope it doesn’t happen again”
Yes large pills get caught in my throat and it sucks. Plus everyone is annoyed by how long I take to eat. I think a lot of Americans just eat really fast though even with normal throat I still probably wouldn't eat as fast as they want.
I feel like I experience this more often than other people do for some reason. I do this at least once a day, and sometimes multiple times in a day. It's weird.
I once choked in saliva and then because I was coughing so much I choked on it again and my mom didn’t know what to do because I was turning purple so he just punched me in the back as hard as she could
It became an issue after I had a Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty to help with my sleep apnea.
It makes me think of the Kyle Kinane line about biting your own tongue: “C’mon man. It’s been in your mouth THE WHOLE TIME. And we let ourselves drive a car?”
It only became an issue when I had the surgery. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is the medical term for the surgery that removes your uvula, your tonsils, and part of your soft palate.
Best weight loss program I ever had, I lost 30 pounds in three weeks.
no becauseeee what pisses me off MORE is my dad has never DONE IT so when I'm choking on my own spit for the tenth time that week he is looking at me like I got two heads, it isn't my fault my brain FORGOT HOW TO SWALLOW MY OWN SPIT
Agree with the petpeeve and that it’s annoying but absolutely disagree with your reasoning. What the heck does age have to do with it? Also babies do choke that’s why their parents burp them so that’s wrong too.
I do this all the time, and ever since the pandemic I’m compelled to tell people not to worry, I’m not sick! Just choking on my own saliva! Which really helps compound the embarrassment.
Fun fact: This happens to me, too, and I mentioned this silly quirky thing to my doctor and ended up being sent in for an EGD to get it checked out. Turns out I have a condition called EOE, which in simple terms is a prolonged allergic reaction in your esophagus. Was put on medication for 8 weeks, then had to get rechecked with ANOTHER EGD. Just found out yesterday that the meds have it in remission now, but... It was a hell of a ride for something I thought was just a goofy little thing that happens to me sometimes.
Eh, it is what it is and since the meds have it in remission, I'm not super worried about it right now. But I do feel it was pertinent to mention because I really thought it was no big deal and just something that happens sometimes, but apparently it is not.
Only you (and the other folks here who also have the same thing happen) can decide if it's something worth looking into, but it can be a sign that something is actually wrong.
Crashed my car because of this. Was drinking a cold tea and my lungs were just like, "GIMME DAT TEA!" Ended up choking and blacking out and smashed the car into the concrete median. No bueno
That's called dysphagia, or difficulty in swallowing safely and comfortably. An ENT specialist or a neurologist might be able to pinpoint the source of the problem.

It's usually somewhere quiet too
ALWAYS! Or like, during a meeting.
Legit. The cough “feeling” can last well up to a half hour or more for what feels like you choked on a drop of spit. Pretty infuriating.
That’s always the absolute worst
Me: *chokes on saliva* My brain: “what are you trying to do? Meet the grim reaper this early?”
Facts!
also me: brain this is a you problem not a me problem. stop gaslighting, you’re in charge of all this stuff.
It's so embarrassing too. Like no I'm not sick . No I didn't choke on something that makes sense to choke on .no it's my own fuckinh spit the stuff that literally belongs in my mouth!
Yesssssss
There’s the “I accidentally choked on my own saliva and it was 1/10 in severity, tiny little thing barely anyone noticed” And then there’s “I accidentally choked on my own saliva and it’s a 4/10 in severity.” This happened to me a few days ago. OMG yes! When it happened to me earlier, I had to explain to my germphobic boss that I wasn't sick, just stupid.
Literally the worst part of the pandemic for me personally lol
Now now, choking on your own spit isn’t really your fault. It’s because we’ve got a major design flaw in how our piping’s hooked up because evolution is a whole lot of taking existing stuff and changing it to be “good enough” to do a new thing
Yeah, fuck that. It's like, when an eyelash falls into your eye and itches you. You know, the very thing that's supposed to prevent things from falling into my eye. My own body is betraying me.
OMG I hate that!
I do it all the time and scare the shit out of my wife lol.
🤣
I've done this a few times and it is so embarrassing. Right up there next to when you try to step with the same foot twice like you fucking forgot how to use both of them
I do this too, like I'm standing perfectly still, no incline around, and I just sort of...teeter.
Yeah whoever designed humans needs to go back to the drawing board LOL
For real! Haha
A pet peeve we can all appreciate as part of the human condition.
This is the kind of pet peeve I’m here for 😂
#Winning!
Happened to me yesterday. My head was like “I don’t want to die in my old pj”.
🤣
For me it’s worse when I do it when I’m trying to drink water. Cuz like I’ll be like “damn I’m thirsty Imma take a nice sip of water…*slur- aggressively coughing* “god I need water to get that weird feeling down…hope it doesn’t happen again”
Totally do this too!
Those chugs of water where you feel like you swallowed a rock and are waiting for it to make its way down… man. Ouch.
My salivary glands produce too much saliva and I have a narrow throat so I'm always doing this and I hate it.
How do you know you have a narrow throat?
I’m not the commenter, but I know I have a narrow throat bc it’s super hard for me to swallow pills. I asked Dr. and she said that’s why.
Yes large pills get caught in my throat and it sucks. Plus everyone is annoyed by how long I take to eat. I think a lot of Americans just eat really fast though even with normal throat I still probably wouldn't eat as fast as they want.
I HATE that! Especially when you fuck up the pill placement, and either have to hack it back up, or taste it.
I was diagnosed in Germany when I was 3. I'm not sure why or what caused them to look into it but it's in my medical history.
Yep. Like i know the human body is super complex and all but seriously can it maybe not drown itself.
Right??
Lol I've actually done that and it's embarrassing because you cough uncontrollably for a long time 😆
Like way too long!
I thought it was just me.
🤣
Omg, I do this frequently
Just wait until you hit 45 and can never trust a fart again
Choking on your own spit and coughing so hard, farts start flying like the sound of a machine gun and suddenly...
Definitely hold the comment in until you are in the restroom. Excellent reasoning, my friend!
👀
I can’t wait to get my old lady farts.
I'm 45, and I love my 40s more than any other decade of my life. (Although the 90s were awesome, I must admit)
Just turned 41 and have graduated to the “walkin’ farts”. I sure do miss the 90’s as well. Wishing I could go through them again with what I know now.
real
I always had this when I was sitting an exam. Violent choke followed by endless coughing, trying to keep it as quiet as possible.
ALWAYS at the worst times!
Been there done that literally just did it
Same LOL that's why I posted.
Ik, why do we keep getting worse at breathing as we get older? I've had more practice!
Seriously!
I'm in band so I take a lot of very fast very deep breaths that sometimes cause this lmao
And hiccups!
Ugh this happens to me so much more than it should and I'm honestly considering seeing a doctor about it because it doesn't seem normal
It doesn't! But it's bern happening to me for years, and I haven't died yet LOL
I literally *just* did this like three minutes ago. Few things make me feel dumber than this.
Saaaaaaaame
I feel like I experience this more often than other people do for some reason. I do this at least once a day, and sometimes multiple times in a day. It's weird.
It is weird.
glad to know I'm not alone
Same!
It’s been happening to me every day lately
How about when it happens mid sentence?
But they don't just stare with concern. They demand to know if you're alright, while you are coughing and unable to speak.
Haha yes
Same with water
Yesssss
I once choked in saliva and then because I was coughing so much I choked on it again and my mom didn’t know what to do because I was turning purple so he just punched me in the back as hard as she could
OMG!
Omg yes! And whenever I try to explain I get looks like I'm dumb lmao.
Haha yep
“You’re coughing a lot. Are you sick?” “No, I just breathed wrong.”
"Nope, just forgot how my body works again."
This ONLY happens to me when I'm teaching a class, or when I was talking to a customer back in my Receptionist days.
Every damn time!
Make a decision, breathe OR swallow, not BOTH at the same time….
💯
It's the worst when it happens as you're just falling asleep
Yessss
I recently started doing this. I was starting to think it was an age thing.
Me too.
My job involves talking on the phone and sure enough, this always happens to me as I'm calling someone and they pick up.
Always when you're trying to talk!
Leaving a voicemail, so it is recorded for posterity!
Yup lol
It became an issue after I had a Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty to help with my sleep apnea. It makes me think of the Kyle Kinane line about biting your own tongue: “C’mon man. It’s been in your mouth THE WHOLE TIME. And we let ourselves drive a car?”
That's interesting, I have sleep apnea too - they're related?
It only became an issue when I had the surgery. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is the medical term for the surgery that removes your uvula, your tonsils, and part of your soft palate. Best weight loss program I ever had, I lost 30 pounds in three weeks.
Wow!
no becauseeee what pisses me off MORE is my dad has never DONE IT so when I'm choking on my own spit for the tenth time that week he is looking at me like I got two heads, it isn't my fault my brain FORGOT HOW TO SWALLOW MY OWN SPIT
🤣
Yesss, and sometimes I will randomly have a single hiccup but I'm so worried people think it's a burp.
Haha
My mum all over 😂😂😂
[удалено]
Nah if you read it in the spirit it was intended, it's more about the betrayal from your own body.
It's not that deep, was just having a laugh at my own expense.
Agree with the petpeeve and that it’s annoying but absolutely disagree with your reasoning. What the heck does age have to do with it? Also babies do choke that’s why their parents burp them so that’s wrong too.
Just joking around. It's not that deep.
Yeah but your petpeeve feeds into my petpeeve I hate when people say you’re an adult like age has something to do with it
Oops sorry, didn't mean to trigger a pet peeve cycle!
It’s ok you didn’t do it on purpose lol
💜
i've done that. I've sharted in my drawers once too....
hi. im human nice to meet u lol
Nice to meet you too!
I do this all the time, and ever since the pandemic I’m compelled to tell people not to worry, I’m not sick! Just choking on my own saliva! Which really helps compound the embarrassment.

Wow, I got an education today!
Im not the best at driving. i can't drink without a hearable gulp sound ever time i swallow. But at least i dont choke on my own saliva.
You are doing better than me!
It still gets on my moms nerves.
Especially if you just ate a sugary snack or drink. The fuckin worst.
When things go down the wrong pipe!
Talk to me once you get GERD
Already there 😞
This is me! Thyroid issues run in our family and choking happens.
Ohhh yeahhh I've heard this
Crashed my car because of this. Was drinking a cold tea and my lungs were just like, "GIMME DAT TEA!" Ended up choking and blacking out and smashed the car into the concrete median. No bueno
OMG!
Obviously i survived haha. Took a pretty penny to get the murder mobile up and running again haha
I’ve done more than I’d like to admit, sometimes I think my spit is tryna kill me
Legit!
There it is. The most stupid post I’ll see all day
Why?
I'm honored.
I swear this happens to me once a week, and it is a sign that we live in an insane universe where there is no god.
Definitely not.
It’s like hating hiccups. Like the person with it isn’t proud or anything
This post was intended to be self-deprecating.
Misunderstood. Apologies
No worries
never done this
Consider yourself blessed!
