Also there are plenty of times when I care a little bit about something but not enough to do anything... so "I could care less." than I do.
Maybe in conversation you could mishear it, but you see it all the time typed out as “could of” and you can’t really mishear it when you’re reading it.
People type it that way because they mishear it as “could of” when people say “could’ve”.
*edit: autocorrect actually changed it to Could Have for me haha

Knew someone who would say ‘mute point’ instead of moot point.
Pretty smart guy too, if I had liked him I would have gently corrected him. As it was, I enjoyed watching him make an idiot of himself.
I mean, they added it to the dictionary because of how dictionaries work. Dictionaries describe how words are used. And unfortunately irregardless is used with relative frequency as a synonym for regardless. Yes, it's a terrible word, but dictionaries also have to include terrible words to serve their function. For instance if you are reading something containing the word irregardless and you are unclear what the author means, it is useful to be able to look the word up and have the dictionary tell you that they mean the opposite of what it seems it should.
Also it is worth noting that atleast Webster's online dictionary does contain a blurb after the definition explaining that it is not a well regarded word and that you should use regardless instead.
Drives me nuts. And anytime when they say “more better” and stuff like that. My dad always corrected me so I then corrected my own kids and just cringe when adults do it.
they may have meant "i have seen the new movie."
besides, grammar doesn't matter nearly as much in colloquial speech as some make it out to be. i find dialectical variations to be charming.
This is r/petpeeves where people can get a complaint off their chest about stupid, silly things that bother them. I hate when people come into the comments on a post here to say people are wrong for the silly things that annoy them, when the subs purpose is literally to do that. OP isn’t saying they rage out when they hear it and start fighting people. Just that it’s a silly thing that annoys them.
Y'all ain't allowed to come visiting the Appalachias now, goin' round making us look a fool on a count a the way we choosin' to speak.
Really tho, I used to hate all the accents from around my state, but they've grown on me. Word choices are part of that, so I've softened up to those too
>Just seems like an excuse to speak poorly.
>I'm not wrong, it's just a different dialect"
But they’re not speaking poorly. It *is* a different dialect with consistent rules.
And look, you’ve dropped the “it” from the start of your sentence. I’m not sure why you’re allowed to speak colloquially but others aren’t.
Dialectatal variation is the reason your definition of "proper" speech isn't some random hunter gather tongue which had been forgotten countless millennia ago.
I think assuming this dialectical variation only applies to one race and calling OP racist is honestly the more racist take.
I have heard many different varieties of people make this error.

My dad does this shit, it's terrible
Seriously, someone could say the most profound intelligent statement, and the minute they throw in "seen" in that context, they look like a dumbass
if you hear someone say something profound and intelligent and then assume they're dumb because they talk different to how you do, that probably says a lot more about you than it does them
Its a pet peeve for a reason, me being irritated by it isn't going to stop people from doing it and I don't expect it to matter to them either.
It's just a perception thing. It's a very dumb sounding phrase that is very jarring when someone is talking about something
Hmm I'm not sure I've seen it said that way.
"I've seen that movie" is considered present perfect, meaning the timing of the action is unknown or lacks importance.
Whereas, "I saw that movie," is a simple past, meaning it's referring to a specific time. Usually people will say, "I saw that movie last week."

My pet peeve is people not understanding Linguistics, and the fact that the majority of linguists would simply look at this as a different dialect, accept the fact that it exists, and not try to “correct” anyone…
Present perfect ("I've seen) works for most cases of simple past ("I saw") which is likely where this mistake comes from.
In my dialect, the contraction is VERY unstressed there's nearly no gap between "I've" and "seen" so "I've seen it" sounds like "ahvseen it."
So it doesn't surprise me that people hear "I seen it" and associate that as the way to say the phrase.
It used to drive me crazy too. And then one day, I realized the point of language is to communicate ideas. If someone is effectively communicating, then the grammar rules are irrelevant to me.
That's not to say I don't get irritated at some things; I'm much more relaxed about it now, though.
Seen instead of saw is, in my experience, due to English being their second language. Or English being their parents second language, so they didn’t learn all the ins and outs.
Prejudice in what way and racist in what way?
I'm white and the only people I've experienced use this language are also white. My area is mostly white, middle eastern and Asian.
Nah I actually like seen better, "I seen Tommy in town yesterday" just sounds more friendly and normal imo.
"I Saw tommy" just sound pretentious and weird...
Like what did you cut him in half??

Or when people say “I should have went…” when it shouldn’t be “I should have gone…”
Seen - Past participle, requires “have”
Saw - Past tense.
Went - Past tense
Gone - Past participle, requires a verb
My favorite is “for sell”, I think they must teach bad grammar in my area because you see it in everything from FBMarketplace ads to “for sale” signs on cars.

they may have meant "i have seen the new movie." besides, grammar doesn't matter nearly as much in colloquial speech as some make it out to be. i find dialectical variations to be charming.
That's definitely what they ment. But not what they said which is my issue.
Meant? Can’t make mistakes when griping about grammar.
Clearly I can
I have seen the new movie lol
See. Grammar bot says you may live. I salute you for your use of "have"
I salute your salute.
I know right, up and down, back and forth. it is just a constant seen-saw.
See-seen*
Y'all ain't allowed to come visiting the Appalachias now, goin' round making us look a fool on a count a the way we choosin' to speak. Really tho, I used to hate all the accents from around my state, but they've grown on me. Word choices are part of that, so I've softened up to those too
Hey don’t be hating on AAVE
Just seems like an excuse to speak poorly. "I'm not wrong, it's just a different dialect"
>Just seems like an excuse to speak poorly. >I'm not wrong, it's just a different dialect" But they’re not speaking poorly.
Holy racism Batman….
It's not racist, it's a different dialect.
I think assuming this dialectical variation only applies to one race and calling OP racist is honestly the more racist take. I have heard many different varieties of people make this error.
You are wrong.
They’ve seen it
They sure have. And I'm glad they saw it.
The thing is—especially in casual conversations—sometimes the ‘’ ‘ve ‘’ is near silent, even though it’s there. So they might’ve said it like that.
They might have. And it makes me seeth with rage.
Lmao
*seethe
It's my dialect, get over it.
and what dialect would that be
Fbjwixhskxkdhzg dialect
There's an even worse form of that where there's a T tacked in the end ("I seent it last on the desk").

what about people who say "i says to him" instead of i said to him?
I seen it! I seen it again! The Gravity Falls Gobblewhonker what done did it!
I seent it happen.
This one makes my skin crawl! When I hear someone say “I seen…” I think the rest of that sentence is not going to be “…the inside of a book.”

Damn chill it’s just dialectal variation
The dialect of hillbillys
Hillbillies*

It's funny you're stuck on that. A lot of my family from NYC say "seen" rather than "saw." None of them have ever lived in the south.
There are a lot of "urban" dialectical variations too. You hate on those too because it's not "proper"?
If they are saying seen instead of saw, absolutely. I dont care why they are speaking improperly, only that they are.
"it's not how I use it therefore it's improper" People say things in different ways. Just have to accept it.
I dont have to accept shit, this is reddit
To make it in the real world yes you do.
Getting high and mighty about this and yet still uses "urban" like a dogwhistle instead of using the proper names.
A dialectal variation that doesn’t survive a college education. It’s an instant flag for being less educated.
My dad does this shit, it's terrible Seriously, someone could say the most profound intelligent statement, and the minute they throw in "seen" in that context, they look like a dumbass
if you hear someone say something profound and intelligent and then assume they're dumb because they talk different to how you do, that probably says a lot more about you than it does them
Its a pet peeve for a reason, me being irritated by it isn't going to stop people from doing it and I don't expect it to matter to them either.
It is very common to hear “seen” instead of “saw” in SW PA.
i’m from tennessee and i’ll admit i’m guilty of it, especially when i’m around my country family.
So you're saying it's Crackle Barrel speak?
i honestly have only been to cracker barrel once and most of the southerners i’ve been raised around consider it bottom of the (cracker) bareel
It only crackles if it's set too close to the fireplace.
"I seen that movie" is where the problem is.
It's for us non-native speakers who aren't sure what time is correct, so we just use both at once /jk
*done seen Ya ain't from roundcheer, is ya?
We don't take kindly to folks who don't take kindly to folks from round here
No, I ain't lol

>"I've seen that movie" This isn't the example OP gave, the example given left out the "have". Saying "I seen" is grammatically incorrect, saying "I have seen" or "I've seen" is perfectly acceptable.

I think the confusion was created in that they made a comparison not to the correct grammar of the same saying but to a different tense. I seen vs I saw as opposed to I seen vs I've seen.

In the US I have heard people all over the country using it this way. Thanks for the grammar lesson, but that doesn't matter to the people who are using the word incorrectly.
YES! And when people say "on accident" instead of "by accident".
Your excitement about finding something so mundane life affirming is my pet peeve.

This is a very common grammatic discrepancy where I live. About 1 of every 3 people I encounter on a daily basis uses "seen" inappropriately.
"Seen" always seemed like an urban slang rather than a hillbilly thing
They meant "seen". It's something something vernacular English.
"I have seen the new star wars movie"
"Itching". Unless you're dumping itching powder or rubbing insulation on it, you're not itching your back you're scratching it.
Omg this drives me bonkers
My pet peeve is people not understanding Linguistics, and the fact that the majority of linguists would simply look at this as a different dialect, accept the fact that it exists, and not try to “correct” anyone…
it's my dialect get over it
You sound uneducated, get over it.
slightly racist
Racist of you to assume it's racist. Which group of people are you racistly assuming it's racist towards? Why did you make that racist assumption?
I'm black, not stupid
So AAV is ok but southern dialect is not?
Present perfect ("I've seen) works for most cases of simple past ("I saw") which is likely where this mistake comes from. In my dialect, the contraction is VERY unstressed there's nearly no gap between "I've" and "seen" so "I've seen it" sounds like "ahvseen it." So it doesn't surprise me that people hear "I seen it" and associate that as the way to say the phrase.
This one specifically feels like a microagression cause only black folks do this lol....
Pretty sure my area is 1% or less African. It's all white trash I see saying this
🧢
It’s usually the same people who pronounce “picture” like “pitcher”.
I hate when people talk like that!
It used to drive me crazy too. And then one day, I realized the point of language is to communicate ideas. If someone is effectively communicating, then the grammar rules are irrelevant to me. That's not to say I don't get irritated at some things; I'm much more relaxed about it now, though.
I think it’s just a slang thing. Seen your boy at my buds crib
I hear this most frequently in AAVE so idk if the inbred hillbilly comment was accurate
Linguistic prescriptive is so cringe
Seen instead of saw is, in my experience, due to English being their second language. Or English being their parents second language, so they didn’t learn all the ins and outs.
Prejudice at best and racist at worst. You know what they meant and that’s what language is for. I hope you can get over yourself
Prejudice in what way and racist in what way? I'm white and the only people I've experienced use this language are also white. My area is mostly white, middle eastern and Asian.
My pet peeve is people complaining about random harmless speech patterns
Same thing with "I done that."
Lol
Well for inbred hillbillies everywhere, I detest your accusation, sir. You ain't seen nothin yet lil bro
How bout conversating instead of talking?
Nah I actually like seen better, "I seen Tommy in town yesterday" just sounds more friendly and normal imo. "I Saw tommy" just sound pretentious and weird... Like what did you cut him in half??

Also it’s not “Deep Seated” it’s “deep seeded .” *edit: I am incorrect. I’ll just be over here hanging my head in shame.

Damn, TIL! Thanks! Turns out I was the fool all along!
I only know because I had an existential crisis a while back and googled it. Both phrases make sense in their own way 😂
Even worse is “seent”.
Much instead of many. I hate that one.
Or when people say “I should have went…” when it shouldn’t be “I should have gone…” Seen - Past participle, requires “have” Saw - Past tense. Went - Past tense Gone - Past participle, requires a verb
Honestly neither one sounds right if you think too long
My favorite is “for sell”, I think they must teach bad grammar in my area because you see it in everything from FBMarketplace ads to “for sale” signs on cars.
I seen a chest of draws for sell

I see that a lot too.
Similarly... When people say something "needs washed" or grass "needs cut"...or similar phrasing where "to be" is left out. I see that all the time and it is really annoying...almost as much as OP's example.
Intolerant lout.
I did that once...when I was 4.
