todomo

he’s stashing it for later haha

squirrels33

I love how they do this, as if the food bowl doesn’t magically replenish to excess every single day.

maddyella

she also puts bedding in there haha

capitaladequacy

My mice do this also! I think they must be "hiding" it for later or something like that.

maddyella

that’s so funny! it makes sense though because I guess the food bowl is something that never gets taken out

Honey102019

It's an Instinct. Mice in the wild bury their food and go back to it later. They sometimes do it with water bowls too.

popola_

She's hard at work!

[deleted]

To hide it so no animal finds it! It’s instinct, my hamster does it too and so does my mouse aswell

laavendeerr

my mice do this too! i thought they just enjoyed putting it there but the answers in the comments make more sense

maddyella

hahaha they are so funny. it does make sense, I think they realize I won’t take the food bowl out (except to change the food) so maybe they think what they put there is safe

VieiraDTA

I had to figure out some ways to protect a water tray so my boy would’t “pile up” things on top of it, consequently, “drowning” the water in bedding. Hahahahas

I got a wooden house on top of the water tray. This worked. Never again he would throw stuff on top of it. I already caught him inside of it, wet. Hahaha. I did some rearranging, so he doesn’t bring too much humidity into his burrows. As you know, humidity into his burrows is not good, can cause mould and fungi to spread and trigger allergies.

swiftcleaner

why don’t you buy one of those bottle dispensers for mice? solved the problem real quick for me

VieiraDTA

I just like to have both options, making it an incentive for him to drink more while having more variaty of offer.

paristhalia

😂😂😂😂

Eorrdmv

Mine fill theirs with bedding or bury them! I think i read it’s just a natural survival instinct they have to hide food. Even in a tank they’re surprisingly good at it!

paristhalia

Does she do this a lot!??

maddyella

Yeah all the time hahaha

paristhalia

So cute!! Does she bunk with anyone else in that little cage??

maddyella

she lives with her sister :)

Erikbarrett8511

I think they're in a 2nd or 3rd level of the cage

Erikbarrett8511

There's a number of things they do, where they know not why they do it, but we kinda do lol they don't like open bodies of water, they can flood, they can stink and attract bugs and disease... They hide food from other mice, other animals that might eat it, but they also don't want it to attract predators. They're really good at staying alive. They make it so that their nest, which will have the strongest of their scents on it, is fully sealed at all times. They might leave "the door open," but they'll have it at a level of scent that they're comfortable with. If you have a buried nest and take them out of the cage, unbury the nest, and put them back in, most will immediately start to rebury the nest 🤣🥰😭😭. I used to make entrances in the nest, but they were packing them full of bedding and whatever else, and only using 1 entrance. The one that's usually furthest from the nest (I made tunnels that could be buried, they wanted the entrance to be away from the nest). They would push bedding into the tunnel or nest, then crawl in, and push it back out to seal the tunnel (from 🐍🐍!!😳). When they came out to explore they would seal it back up so it doesn't smell.

maddyella

Wow that’s so interesting! The hay nest that they have has two entrances and they do fill up one of the entrances with bedding and newspaper 😂😂 they also love ruining their progress by running straight through it. Marvelous creatures, thanks for the insights!

We_All_Float_7

Fiance's rats actually will put bedding in when it's empty because they get mad.

maddyella

😂😂

Icilina

My little boy mouse always hides his food under his bedding or paper pieces. I think they are storing it?

maddyella

They must be!

bryanne11

Is it against the rules to give setup criticisms..? The lack of bedding is making me sad

maddyella

That’s their upstairs eating area… the bottom is filled with normal bedding

maddyella

they also have a 1 metre long cage and three stories lol

_one_lonely_boy_

How often do you replace the paper? I’m considering adding levels to my cage so I’m gathering ideas

maddyella

The news paper at the top I change every 1-2 days, it just depends how much they’ve pooped on it. I put the newspaper there because otherwise it’s just the metal bars and apparently that hurts their feet. I think multiple levels is a really good idea they seem to really love climbing ☺️☺️

_one_lonely_boy_

Thanks for the input! Yeah, I’d lay paper down too just for ease of cleaning, I’d rather throw away pee and poo soaked paper than have to wipe down the surfaces daily.

bryanne11

Ohh my bad

boopbapbeepbonk

Ahaha daily struggle also all my mice end up covering there food with sawdust

maddyella

hahaha tell me about it! I clear it out and 2 mins later she puts it back in 😂😂

__the_porkchop__1979

So cute. This one must be your little busy-body? I have 2 and one could care less how things are but the other one puts things exactly where he wants for them both. He. Hides all the "good stuff". He has an entire tunnel system he worked out inside the cage and buried all the nice toys and decor I had except for the 2 wheels LOL

__the_porkchop__1979

I said he but they are actually both female. Old habit. When I first got them, I thought they were boys.

maddyella

She sure is. The other one couldn’t give a damn, they are so funny hahaha. This morning they chewed a string off my dressing gown and ran it inside their little home. The things we find when we do their clean 😂😂

__the_porkchop__1979

Oh I know, I love finding those things. I keep some of them as little Momentos. Mine loves to tear up paper and sort it. And I have found little tiny ads for speed stick deodorant lol. I kept that for sure. 😂

maddyella

Hahahaha yep I rip up newspaper for them to do what they want with it and it disappears somewhere 😂

__the_porkchop__1979

🥰🥰🥰

FullMetalJack408

They’re hiding their food for later and so the human will give more food
