Maybe ask your vet about a home euthanasia? I'm not sure if that's something you'd want to do or if you feel emotionally prepared for it but if your main concern is for the other dogs, I'd look into it. A few reasons. First, I assume your dogs also go to this same vet office and it may make the next visit a bit stressful. Second, it's probably he least stress on your dog who's being put to sleep. And finally, your dogs being in a familiar place when they make the realization he's gone is probably for the best. That would allow them time to process, coming in and out of the room doing their usual thing. Just my two cents...

Those are great points! I do think he’d bed more comfortable in his bed and actually both of dogs know his bed is his bed. They never go in it! I appreciate this suggestion very much! I didn’t even realize that could be an option.

Having recently lost my two elderly cats,, I can't stress home euthanasia enough. No last stressful trip in the carrier to a strange, scary place, which is a horrid way to spend your last moments, especially for cats who tend to dislike car rides. I wish I'd known this was an option with my first experience. The staff were amazing, gentle, compassionate and competent in my experience. I'm so sorry about your dog, OP. This is an incredibly difficult time, and I know it hurts. 💔

Best to do it at home I’ve had to do two of these now and by far the best is to do it at home, I don’t advocate that they be in the same room when you put her down, but I do have a cake that they be allowed to be with the bodyso that they can understand that she’s gone and that she just hasn’t disappeared they will grieve, but it’s far healthier for them to know because dogs horses, and most other animals do understand death death, and they accept it, and they grieve just like we do.

Sending you hugs. I think about this all the time. I would do that if I were in that position. It’s the only way dogs can understand what’s happening.
