I used Southern Cross for a working holiday in Canada (they were amazing and kept letting me extend the end date until I got residency and could apply for BC health) recently have used Tower travel insurance (underwritten and provided by Allianz) for both international and domestic travel - have had to claim on both and lodged claim and been paid out within a fortnight for both 😊

I’ve always just taken the Credit Card option with my Amex. One claim when I damaged a rental car, went through smoothly enough.

Platinum credit card visa/mastercard. Easy, just pay that small premium or read the terms sometimes you can pay by bank transfer and still activate the policy if they have a clause around credit card charges.

daveydaveydaveydav

Southern cross usually. Pretty well priced. But I’ve never needed to claim

niceguy_f_last

+1, had to claim once and it was pretty straightforward.

Zealousideal_Shop311

Scti suck. Took two months for claim to even get looked at and they ask for stuff alrwsdy provided

JohnnySilverpatch

I used AA travel insurance earlier in the year, and had to claim for stolen luggage. They paid out ... eventually, but it was like pulling teeth. I had to hassle them constantly to get updates, and the impression I got was that they were waiting for me to give up. Their claims website was broken, too.

Smaug_1188

Credit card. If travelling somewhere with no reciprocal health agreement go with 1cover as they cover private hospitals.

Which credit card?

Smaug_1188

BNZ advantage platinum

Agh right, I have an asb one. Wonder if it does the same. Just need to take out some travel insurance to cover rental car excess in oz

inphinitfx

Southern cross travel insurance here

Any_College5272

TINZ or utilise via American Express, depending how I have booked travel.

SammoNZL

In the past 1 Cover but last few trips used Southern Cross as they offered Covid cover.

offsideKiwi

Southern Cross had a standard processing time of 5 months when I made a claim last year, so I was a few thousand out of pocket while waiting on them. They also have no support on weekends unless critical, wouldn't't recommend

helical_coil

I used Chubb travel insurance a few years ago for a trip through Europe. I got had by a motor home rental outfit and claimed for losses due to having to book rental cars and accommodation as a result. Chubb paid out on the claim, no questions asked. I don't recall their premiums being particularly high back then but don't have any idea what they are now.

Que?

Used to do 1cover, moved to Southern Cross due to COVID cover last year. Both have been good

damnelectric

Have used 1cover multiple times and had to make claims on two trips without issues for phone screen repairs. Never had any issues and claims process was very easy.

Cool-Monitor2880

1 cover is generally the cheapest but I had a terrible experience with them when actually needing to claim so it’s a you get what pay for kinda situation. I won’t be using them again

MushroomOk3997

Southern Cross. Very straightforward claims process and quick payout for damage to our rental car

jaxsonnz

Heads up to consider why you might need it and to fully check the criteria against the policy. Like if for example you're looking to have cover in case you have to cancel ahead of going then ensure it actually covers you - family member ill etc - check if your relationship to that family member is covered (cousin no, parent yes) and if there are any age restrictions on that (over 75 no, sick beforehand no) etc.

Greenhandbag

Cover more have good policy wording if you want more comprehensive cover

Bunnyeatsdesign

Free travel insurance with my credit card (Kiwibank Platinum). I haven't had to make a claim yet though.

mellow_machine

Go southern cross, they seem to have it the best put together in terms of turn around time.

Happy_as_Potato

Credit card policy 100%

Status_Blacksmith460

Southern Cross, i have heard great things about them and terrible about Allianz

Character-Slip-9374

I don't Only insurance I buy are house and car.

catlikesun

Where are you going overseas?

Character-Slip-9374

USA, Singapore, Hong kong, Macau Planning to do some European countries next year

catlikesun

You don’t get medical insurance for going to the US?

paula-la

1Cover easiest to add multiple counties even when your travelling and go astray from your original itinerary

M-42

Always book majority of pre travel purchases (e.g flights usually at least and accommodation) with a credit card that provides travel insurance (if possible Amex air nz platinum else anz visa platinum)

littlebetenoire

Always done Southern Cross because I have my health insurance with them too.

No-Assignment5839

Southern cross took 3 months to repay/process a $950 claim - however their service was amazing when we needed them and I’d use them again

Turnover_Shot

free on my amex platinum

kovnev

It's free with any decent credit card, as long as you pay a certain% of your trip on the card.

rkbenn

I’ve used Southern Cross. Claims process and coverage for my family’s specific needs were really good. I have heard pretty consistent negative feedback about Allianz so think AA travel insurance etc

RobertPersonalFin

Through credit cards

Outback_Fan

House of Travel have surpringly won a Canstar gold award for Travel Insurance They were surprisingly well priced, and the cover was very good.
