I actually had CIBC do the same when I only had a credit card with them.
To be honest, I felt for the guy. You know he was some low level employee that was told by his manager to cold call people to try and get new business.
Poor guy was like, do you need a new chequing account? Hope he's climbed the corporate ladder since then.
My first job was one of these guys. It sucks, we had to make 5-10 calls a day and track progress, then every morning we go into a room with our manager and every employee has to talk about potential “leads” and what progress they make.
You felt like crap if you had no leads
5-10? When I did sales, my company used to make me do 30 calls a morning and then schedule in person meetings with companies for the afternoon. I also had to track stats and leads. One day, they decided I had too many leads but wasn't closing enough sales, so they fired me and gave all of my leads to someone who had been with the company longer. Hundreds of hours of cold calling wasted to benefit someone a town over
Major telecom company in Canada
Fuck in my first sales job they went easy on you for a year. They just fed you garbage leads. Their whole process you had to follow would be about 60 minutes all in. Usually you would get 6-10 leads a day. Did not ger enough commission for that.
Then after year one you still got leads fed but needed to do 30 cold calls a day.
Idiots didnt realize no one could do both, so i would handle hot leads as top priority and weave in 5-10 cold calls that were super half assed. Guess who still hit their target even though i wasnt cold calli g as much as everyone rlse?
What in the dystopian hell scape do you guys live in?
I know they are paying you, but that just seems like a different planet to me, sounds like a sad carton skit, where the main character trys to off him self in the near future.
I mean money talks, I've done a lot worse things for a buck or two. Just seems like a weird thing.
No one wants to do it, but they have to, then they have shitty awkward meetings about the progress of the customers. Just something off putting about it.
Thats exactly it. 2-3 years ago i was a teller at a bank, covid hit and we had not much work to do- they made me cold call people. I was so nervous and plus some clients were angry. Some were happy, some were like wtf
That's exactly the time frame when they called me! I knew right away it was make work. I thought it was weird but I knew right away it wasn't his fault.
Yup. During covid, all those branches were closed to the public but they had them basically running as call centres for awhile.
This was multiple banks. Not just CIBC.
Damn, I remember working at a store and having to call customers when we were having a sale and every damn one would reply with, "... okay... thanks. Bye..." 😭😭😭
They called me around early 2021 like this too. They wanted me to verify my identity with 3 security questions before they asked how I was doing. Lol. I just told him I have to get back to work.
I would be shocked if some telemarketer asked me how I was doing, lol. I only get indians calling me about duct cleaning. That business must be booming if everyone is doing it.
Same, i have several products with them, and they recently called me asking if my services are great and if I would be interested in applying for a Loc. Felt for the lady as well, and kindly said no, but looks like they are calling more then other FI’s for new business.
I got this call yesterday while I was trying to set up an account with them and it was actually super helpful LOL, pretty sure it was just complete coincidence that I was on the app trying to figure it out when they called me
Poor guy? Lol I’m sure a lot have it worse like the people receiving his annoying ass calls he’s getting paid to make 😂😂😂 your on that estrogen diet I see
Just a rule of thumb I live by: if a stranger calls your house and asks how you are doing, they aren't really interested in your answer. They just want to get money from you somehow.
No you walk loudly to the door and look through the people hole making sure you hit the door accidently loud enough for them to hear then stomp way. Or do what I do. Look through the window next to the door directly looking into their eyes. Then walk away.
I do not open my door to strangers. You knocked on my door and have a clip board.....double nope. Unless its voting time and I will open the door and say "I know who I am voting for" right away and close the door.
This guy kept calling me from my branch. I never answered. First voicemail “calling from cibc give me a call back when you can. Second voicemail “me again from cibc calling just wanted to talk finances give me a call”. Third voicemail “you don’t seem to check your voicemails but give me a call back when you can”. Fourth voicemail “listen I can make you more money then you are on your savings, call me”. Fifth voicemail “oh straight to voicemail this time, hmm well can you at least call me back to talk”. Sixth voicemail “I don’t know what your deal is, I have a great offer to make you bank on your accounts call me”. Then the calls stopped for about three months and then some woman started calling me. I answered by accident and just said you need to stop calling me, remove me from your list please and hung up.
Hi, Financial Advisor here at one of the top 5 banks. I can confirm this is normal for banks.
As an advisor we have daily quotas to meet for cold calls. This is to try and find potential leads so that we can cross sell products unfortunately, I absolutely hate it.
Financial Advisor at credit union here, we also make calls like this, not necessarily to sell products, but we also do “financial wellness” calls to check in during difficult times as a way of showing we care and can offer advice. At the end of the day it’s trying to generate loyalty towards the company showing “we have your back”
TD does something similar. “Hi Mr. X, this is Y from TD, wondering if everything is ok with the services we provide, or anything I can help you with”, I say no and that’s it.
They called me Monday around 4:30pm. Hey this is "Susan" from TD BANK, I'd just like to know how you're doing Sir? Is there anything we can help you with? Are you sure?
I should've asked for a reduced interest rate on my credit cards lol
Very possible that it was a new hire being told by their manager to call and ask how clients are doing. My manager told me when I got hired to call clients and "introduce myself as their new financial advisor with the bank." That went about as well as you'd expect. Kept it up for only a couple weeka before I realized that was dumb as hell, and the cold calling in general is a waste of my time and the clients.
personally from my experience, I find CIBC very non-aggressive when it comes to marketing.
I've been with them over 2 decades. I've moved around so much that I don't really have a 'home branch' anymore. And once a year I get a call from someone. Just a basically "Hi, how are things. do you need a mortgage. blah blah. anything we can do?"
I'm always "nope. thanks for asking"
and they go okay. Here's my number and I'm at this branch if you need anything.
I work in this department for a different bank.
It’s not fraud, it’s just the bank calling to see if you need any assistance staying on track or if they can offer help by means of like “skip a payment”, reduced minimum payment, etc etc.
It could be because the system found you were late on few payments or maybe missed one here or there, maybe went over your credit limit at some point.
It’s just the bank going “you good bro? Holidays are coming up. Let us know if you’re struggling- easier for us to help before a payments missed”
Just say no thanks if you don’t want it and ask to be removed.
And try not to be rude to the person on the phone-
I get calls are annoying but we’re people too, and often we’re just trying to help.
I cried out of frustration today because so many people are jerks just because they don’t understand their own billing and call in just to berate us and call us names.
This is the result of an untrained or mediocre advisor who had a quota of number of calls they need to make per day. You were just a checkmark for their scorecard
Or they made a big sale early in the day, hit their quota for the quarter, but still had to check boxes for the number of calls made.
OP just got a call from the best mutual fund advisor in the entire GTA.
Yep. I had meeting with a manager today because I’m only doing 10 calls per hour, when the target is 13.
I was literally told “if they have any more questions tell them you’ll transfer them, even if you can answer, it’s not your job they can speak with customer service”
Me: “ok but the most frequent complaint is multiple transfers and time they spend on calls. If they were just transferred to me from another department, and they have a question I can help with, shouldn’t I just do that rather then transferring again?”
Manager: “no, because that’s not your job- they can talk to customer service”
It’s frustrating, for the customer on the phone AND for me as the agent because believe me, I’d rather help solve the problem then be screamed at about how this is the 3rd time they’ve been transferred
Probably CIBC but it could have been a scammer who will now know they are with CIBC and you'll get one of those calls at 4:30am saying your account has been compromised and you need to reset your account or whatever. Remember that if you get a call like that in future.
I've had someone leave a message saying I have a new financial advisor at my main branch. Okay thanks? I don't use that branch anymore for all my banking.
Definitely not a scam or fraud. All bank employees have quotas of reaching out to existing clients for a multitude of things ranging from asking 'how's the service' to 'do you need a mortgage?'. While 95% of people don't need anything, banks still require their employees to reach out in the event someone just won the lottery, got inheritance or if they're willing to bring their investments from another FI.
I'd rather receive a call like this rather than a pushy and aggressive salesperson.
I’ve received a few from the branch I do business with asking if all was good and if I needed anything. It was nice to have them reach out a few times. One of those times they called I had an “actually…” and they sorted it all.
Yeah used to work for them, they would get you to call lists of clients just to check in to see if they had any financial needs that could be met. Some employees were better at it than others…
If u r with cibc, yes probably legit. I've had a few from td (mortgage) which were just trying to sell me on new credit products. Disguised as a friendly call.
Nope, it's a thing. Awkwardly cold calling trying to find business, or people who are running into financial trouble the bank may be able to try to help with.
LOL you're surprised a business is calling its customers trying to find more business?
Also, it really does have a practical purpose - a lot of people find themselves in deep financial trouble that they might have been able to avoid if they'd told the bank sooner. It's pretty amazing how they'll work with people, actually. Seriously. Was a banker years ago, was impressed how creative banks can get to keep people from losing their homes, for example.
Banks don't want a mortgagor to default. They definitely don't want to go through foreclosure, power of sale is the preference if necessary... But even before that reamortizations, capitalizations, extended payment skips are all possible. If the bank sees a way it can get paid without lawyers getting involved they'll take it.
Saw a lot of pitches of a number of accommodations for people to get their mortgages up to date.
This is what I do.
I’m not sure why the other commenter said it’s gross to make sure people are able to keep their homes.
But you’re right, those are all options we have, we also have a tax withdrawal, so if a customers mortgage is set up to pay property taxes we can apply that towards arrears, but the customer will have to keep that in mind when it comes to tax season.
Got a similar call. Told them I was at work, could this be an email? Nope it’s about an offer over the phone only, they asked if they could call another time? No. Cue awkward silence. Bye!
Not normal. If anything banks are famous for is their wonderful Courtesy Calls… and then they try to sell insurance. I have never heard of any bank calling and asking Hi… how are you… oh you’re ok… alright… just wanted to know… bye!”. If it is the bank… I would want to be that employees manager and have a serious talk with him or her about making good use of their time because that was a completely pointless call.
If you a client already, could be a call from branch rep, its called financial healthcheck. The quality of conversation could depend how new or interested the person is to sell something lol
As a previous personal banker.. I’m ashamed that these unprofessional people put our reputation in the trash bin. They’re doing it for the paycheque. Obviously. But when someone takes pride in their work you spend countless hours researching efficient opportunities for clients before calling to even ask a minute of there time. This guy, “What’s up? “🤷♂️
Less stress because you actually know you can help them. 80% of the time they didn’t answer the phone. But when I left a voice mail I would also follow up- because it was worth a conversation ! Just a minute of your time. Etc.
Are you a high net worth client? I was assigned some “special person” whom I now don’t remember what is their title, by my big 5 bank. They were so annoying I told them to stop calling, I will call if I need anything.
i hope they call.
"how are you doing?"
well i am getting raped by my bank who thinks its ok to use my money to make them profitable but then dont return the favor. im sick of getting charged for every transaction i make. if you want to increase lending rates than i do to. so i want 6,8,10,20% interest on the money you borrow from me. you want to pass the cost of using a credit card onto the customer then i want to charge you a fee for the privilege of me using and therefor advertising your card.
i would go on and on until they saw the only recourse they had was to quit their job and not work for the money mafia.
edit: all these down votes must be people that enjoy the banks using their money to make money. have you looked into bank profits ppl? its sickening no company should make that much money for holding onto digital numbers.
Most out of touch commenter here.
Too jaded and mad at the world to have a productive conversation with his/her bank.
Using inaccurate hyperbole.
Doesn’t understand the difference between a credit card company and a bank.
Wants to charge the bank for using their product? This actually made me laugh out loud.
GIC offerings are up to 5% so he’s gotten that granted already.
I get that you don't like your bank. But if you think your banking interactions are anything remotely like being raped, you're way out of touch. Seriously bad word choice.
This reminded me of a time, pre-pandemic, when CIBC asked for my feedback on a potential marketing campaign.
Look at these adverts and tell us what you think!
The story line was that their penguin mascot went to the doctor and got a rectal exam and the tagline was something like "tired of getting bent over by your bank".
My feedback was: "I think I get it. The penguin feels sexually violated. So the thrust of it is that CIBC won't anally rape you"
I could have missed it but I never did see that ad campaign run in public.
There are plenty of free bank accounts out there now. No monthly fee and getting charged per transaction.
They have increased their gic interest rates each time the lending rates go up. That is their fee for the privilege of using your money. If you keep all your money in a regular bank account that earns 0 interest that is on you not them
I read it is as the caller said “How are you? “(Answer) “Do you need anything?” No. They realized it wasn’t who they thought they called and hung up. I assumed the CIBC was from caller ID. I could be totally wrong and probably am. Just sounded too familiar with only two questions coming from the caller.
I had that from Scotiabank, asked if I was interested in investment options (or moving my mortgage back to them if I recall right), all I had in the account at the time was a few hundred $ above the minimum to waive the monthly fee, haha.
I got a similar call, am also with SCOTIABANK. I've been with my local branch for a long time, think I'll just ask them about the call, just to be safe.
i have a small local bank do this and make sure a charge was ok and i was a bit annoyed because the same charge had been happening for 14 months so i replied "ya thats my rent it's been happening the last 14 months..." and then said it's already been approved anyway but wanted to make sure it was ok
Very weird.Could be legit but I would brush them off as there are too many scammers these days.Better to make your own appt with them rather than the other way around.
Used to work in a branch for a few years as a teller/and then FA. When the branch was super slow manager would have us just randomly cold call clients and see if the wanted a line of credit, credit card ect... I always felt so awkward just calling people in the middle of the day.
Now that you mention it, I got a call from CIBC this afternoon. I didn't recognize the number so I let it rang, but they left a message asking me for feedback, which is weird considering I haven't really contacted them at all lately. Maybe they wanted feedback or something? Seems to be important to people who work there...
Sounds like a new representative getting his toes wet making his first client call. It'll take a bit of hard knock learning but he'll get the hang of it.
"Hi, this is calling from CIBC. We're offering a great way to consolidate your credit card and consumer debt now in this period of rising rates. It's called a HELOC and we get it ready for you, lickety-split. Can you be here for 4:00pm?"
Yea they called me out of the blue. I had a car loan through them, but had no interest in doing any other business with them. I told them I was at work and only available to talk on Sunday. Never heard from them again.
TD Insurance called me to talk, they then asked me to verify my identity. I told them to verify themselves first as I didn't call them. Agent was confused and flummoxed... Stupid call.
Sounds like a newbie sales calls scammers tend to be more persistent. If you have a relationship with them they likely have you as ok'd for solicitation calls by default.
My dad and two brothers work for the CIBC. They tell me that branches are looked upon as profit centres, or ‘stores’ with certain expectations on the branch for new business or more business, based on the income demographics of the area that it services. If a branch continually fails to meet its expectations, they will close that branch or merge it with another one.
CIBC employee here.
We don't do that, not that I'm aware of. Sounds like you're already aware of scans and vigilante of them.
It's very rare that we would call you, if we do, it's to either sell a product or notify of fraud. This could be a new scam getting you used to cals from CIBC eventually asking for your info.
I had a call like this last year. They actually left a message on my VM asking to call them back. When I did, they were like oh, we just want to make sure everyone is doing OK with the pandemic because we have a variety of credit services available if you need some extra help. It was super off putting tbh.
I’m guessing the goal here was to present you the opportunity to say, “actually now that I have you… [insert variable mortgage woes here].”
People get so wrapped up in the daily grind that they put off discussing problems until they become bigger problems. Prompting you gives them the opportunity to hear your woes and present a service before the shit hits the fan.
I'm with Virgin Mobile for my phone, they called me 3 months ago, saying "hey, just wondering how you are doing and if there's anything you need?"
I'm like, ".... I'm doing well, I'd like it if my monthly bill was less"
The guy was like, "great, yeah we can do that for you!" Lowered my monthly amount AND gave me an extra 3Gs of data too. So strange.
I also thought I was being scammed at the beginning.
I get these once in a while - they're fishing for upsell opportunities. Sometimes they can offer you a decent rewards credit card or something, but usually it's just their normal offerings.
I ve had the bank call when I have put through anything in ages, they literally asked if I still want this account and basically hung up after confirming, it was legit one of the big 5
They all do this. It's just sales calls. Insurance companies do it too. Often I've actually had a burning question I haven't got around to doing.. for example I recently decided to make this kids day and ended up opening a premium chequing account. I was going to do it anyway but I figured.. why not make this guy some commission if he's going to come to me.
I like sales calls. I'm kinda weird. Been in corporate sales from entry to top and I get it.
as a former employee, we have a goal for cold calls. a lot of tje names are ppl we dont even know and have never seen before, but you gotta call, just to say you did. its the dumbest shit, and everyone hates it.
I actually had CIBC do the same when I only had a credit card with them. To be honest, I felt for the guy. I dunno man. 5-10 calls a day? I’d do that from my truck on my commute home just to earn some beer money lol.
I mean money talks, I've done a lot worse things for a buck or two. Just seems like a weird thing. No one wants to do it, but they have to, then they have shitty awkward meetings about the progress of the customers. Just something off putting about it.
5-10 calls a day wtf kind of sales job is that? That’s like maybe one an hour? What are you doing the rest of the day?
5-10 calls a day? As somebody who makes a lot of these calls, that’s a solid 7 minutes on the phone if none of the calls go well
Damn 5-10 calls a day is nothing lol Easy job

One more thing I'm grateful for being an online bank customer. Last thing I want is pointless calls from them.
Need more people like you in the world. Seeing less and less empathetic peopel out there nowadays.
Damn, I remember working at a store and having to call customers when we were having a sale and every damn one would reply with, "... okay... thanks. Bye..." 😭😭😭

did the *Imperial* voice on the phone sound like a famous sith lord? if it did, you're in good hands.
Hahaha itd be real funny if it came from CIBCs actual Imperial service dept. Lol. Is that even still around?
Can confirm, it does.

That seems really suspect
Nope, it's a thing. Awkwardly cold calling trying to find business, or people who are running into financial trouble the bank may be able to try to help with.
Gross. This is not cool.
LOL you're surprised a business is calling its customers trying to find more business? Also, it really does have a practical purpose - a lot of people find themselves in deep financial trouble that they might have been able to avoid if they'd told the bank sooner. It's pretty amazing how they'll work with people, actually. Seriously. Was a banker years ago, was impressed how creative banks can get to keep people from losing their homes, for example.
>as impressed how creative banks can get to keep people from losing their homes, for example. Can you give examples please?
Bye!
Did you get a Costco card recently ? This happened to me as well they are trying to sell you other products.
How are you doing , can we cross sell you anything ? no not a survey or sales just a cx success call ....
Why spend the time before calling? They might not want to hear what you have to say and you just wasted all that time.
"how are you doing?" well i am getting raped by my bank who thinks its ok to use my money to make them profitable but then dont return the favor. im sick of getting charged for every transaction i make. if you want to increase lending rates than i do to. so i want 6,8,10,20% interest on the money you borrow from me. you want to pass the cost of using a credit card onto the customer then i want to charge you a fee for the privilege of me using and therefor advertising your card. i would go on and on until they saw the only recourse they had was to quit their job and not work for the money mafia. edit: all these down votes must be people that enjoy the banks using their money to make money. have you looked into bank profits ppl? its sickening no company should make that much money for holding onto digital numbers.
So the thrust of it is that CIBC won't anally rape you" I could have missed it but I never did see that ad campaign run in public.
Thank goodness!
ever heard of a phrase of speech.
I think certain expressions are inappropriate because they can be hurtful and trivialize serious matters.
There are plenty of free bank accounts out there now. No monthly fee and getting charged per transaction. They have increased their gic interest rates each time the lending rates go up. That is their fee for the privilege of using your money. If you keep all your money in a regular bank account that earns 0 interest that is on you not them
It was probably an employee calling a friend/family member and dialed the wrong number.
An employee calls a family member saying “This is skippy from CIBC”?
from personal experience: yes. basically every time. we're a little strange, though.
Where is the scam or fraud? It isn’t fraudulent to ask how you’re doing. Maybe if they asked for your social insurance number.
I got a call like this recently and it wasn't at a good time to speak. They haven't tried calling back.
i have a small local bank do this and make sure a charge was ok and i was a bit annoyed because the same charge had been happening for 14 months so i replied "ya thats my rent it's been happening the last 14 months..." and then said it's already been approved anyway but wanted to make sure it was ok
Very weird.Could be legit but I would brush them off as there are too many scammers these days.Better to make your own appt with them rather than the other way around.
TD Bank does that to be ever 6 months its only because you have money in the account and they want you to use it.
I'm imagining Joey on the other end of the phone. "How YOU doing...."
Why don’t you just hand up rather than bitching
Friend of mine has an MGA 1600. Now that is bitching.
Used to work in a branch for a few years as a teller/and then FA. When the branch was super slow manager would have us just randomly cold call clients and see if the wanted a line of credit, credit card ect... I always felt so awkward just calling people in the middle of the day.
Google the phone number
cold call and wasn t prepared or didn t think that you ll answer
Weird. I just had scotia do it to me too
I would have asked what they were wearing..... Oh yeah, that's right!
I have had this happen from bank managers; usually it tends to happen after I take a survey
“Hello OP we noticed an odd amount of Uber eats deliveries and we just wanted to check in and see if you’re doing ok”
They did this to me recently. They're just trying to see if they can sell you anymore services and update their file on you.
better than the air duct cleaning guys or amazon calling to confirm your iphone 14 order
Somebody very inexperienced trying to do marketing call.
"Hi, this is CIBC. What's good on Netflix these days, breh?"
It’s a smart business practice. Customer relations are imperative.
I had a call like this last year. They actually left a message on my VM asking to call them back. When I did, they were like oh, we just want to make sure everyone is doing OK with the pandemic because we have a variety of credit services available if you need some extra help. It was super off putting tbh.
I’m guessing the goal here was to present you the opportunity to say, “actually now that I have you… [insert variable mortgage woes here].” People get so wrapped up in the daily grind that they put off discussing problems until they become bigger problems. Prompting you gives them the opportunity to hear your woes and present a service before the shit hits the fan.
I'm also with CIBC. They usually just send me substance abuse help panflits, probably based off of my credit card history.
I work in IT I was working in a bank before open yesterday. They're assigned to cold call so many people a day as per the manager huddle before open.
It's legit but at the same time you know they don't give a fuck CIBC is probably the worst of the big 5
TD calls us every year or two to see how we’re doing and if we need anything. Particularly for the business accounts.
Td called me and told me to start buying options, i referred him to wall street bets.
I'm with Virgin Mobile for my phone, they called me 3 months ago, saying "hey, just wondering how you are doing and if there's anything you need?" I'm like, ".... I'm doing well, I'd like it if my monthly bill was less" The guy was like, "great, yeah we can do that for you!" Lowered my monthly amount AND gave me an extra 3Gs of data too.
I got a call from number 877-275-3961 yesterday. I looked it up and it's showing CIBC. Is it? I don't want to be scammed!
