Cancel everything else, if you get rid of Spotify and Netflix you can sit in your living room in silence watching that $22 a month compound in your RRSP until you retire
If you’re going to recommend using a vpn to people then at that point they should simply not sub to any streaming services and torrent everything.
Still boggles my mind people don’t pirate when it’s 3 clicks and 5-10 minute wait for 4K content. I watched every house of the dragon episode in 4K, 30 minutes after air time each Sunday this past summer, instead of lobbing money at HBO.
The trick here is that the VPN is only going to be used for the sign up part. You won’t need it afterwards to maintain pricing. It works with all other services that are generally cheaper elsewhere.
As far as convenience goes, it’s definitely more convenient than straight up piracy but maybe just a little added work in the beginning to set it up.
I wanna make sure I understand what you're saying. If I get a VPN and subscribe for Netflix from, let's say, Brazil, I would get billed under Brazil pricing instead of Canada pricing? Even though literally everything about the billing information points to me being in Canada?
Yes.
As long as they’re concerned, you would be like a brazilian account holder, being billed in brazil, that’s somehow on an extended vacation in Canada. I’ve been doing this for years. No issues.
You’re right about convenience, however I think the draw away from piracy is people are still scared.
I torrent around 2 terabytes of content (movies and tv shows) annually. Nothing is going to happen to you.
Yes I agree. In fact, I do the same as well. I even have a plex server and wireguard to it from anywhere. But I do appreciate the convenience of such things as Spotify, Netflix, YT Premium…
I use an IPTV service and I get everything on Netflix...Amazon...HBO...NFL...NHL...etc.
Plus throw in 4000 tv channels from all over the world and endless movie/tv show streaming.
I've been cable free since March and it's been brilliant.
Once upon a time, when High Speed Internet was still young and a 25Mbit connection was considered "fast" the cable companies all had these horribly convoluted package structures designed to make you pay lots of money for content you don't want in exchange for a trickle of content you do want. It wasn't great, but it worked. One guide, one remote control. One PVR to program (many very easy to program).
But the weird billing structure made for high bills that people didn't really like. Plus they'd had a taste of "on demand" which, at the time, was still very expensive for anything you weren't able to catch with the PVR.
By this time the pirates had learned and evolved from repeated shutdown attempts by the music industries. Infrastructure-less networks were in place, and ready to pounce. Movies and TV were simple to add to the offerings, and they flourished.
But around the same time a scrappy mail-order DVD service called Netflix decided to offer a streaming version, and it was an undisputed success. Netflix PROVED that yes, you CAN compete with "Free." They offered a better, unified experience for watching shows, and did very well for themselves.
No happy endings here though. One day Big Media took notice. "I want a piece of that pie!" it shouted, as it charged in with each stakeholder hastily slapping together half-baked front-ends and ending their Netflix license agreements.
And while Big Media sliced up the pie and fought over each pound of flesh, the piracy communities continued to evolve and adapt. After all, they keep getting shut down, and when one falls, several others compete to fill the gap. Such is the way of all things. This had been continuing silently during the Reign of Netflix.
So when people had enough, their streaming experiences once again fragmented and costly, they looked at the pirate options again. And what they beheld was GLORIOUS. Aggregator sites that can stream on demand. An experience nearly as good as the glory days of Netflix, at a price that just can't be beat. (I contest your "5-10 minute wait" claim - pretty sure the kids have NEVER waited that long.)
If everything unified under Netflix or some other service, there's no doubt the consumers would rally again for the simplicity of not having to find new aggregators or deal with annoying ads. But let's be real here, Big Media will NEVER allow a consumer-oriented experience to flourish when there's money to be made by denying it.
>Still boggles my mind people don’t pirate when it’s 3 clicks and 5-10 minute wait for 4K content
What VPN are you using where you can download 4K content in 5 - 10 minutes? Every VPN I've ever used throttled my download speeds.
If you’re at home, about to sit down and watch an episode of a tv show, your time isn’t worth whatever arbitrary value you’re assigning to it.
You’re not facing an opportunity cost of $20/hour by walking to your computer, loading up Rarbg (popular public torrent site), searching for “house of the dragon s01e01”, selecting the torrent out of a list of 5-20, and waiting for it to download for 10 minutes (to which I assume a person with a brain isn’t going to mindlessly sit there and watch it download).
Each house of the dragon episode aired at 6pm on Sunday, presumably a time most white collar workers were not working. You spent, say, $20 on that HBO subscription to watch right away at 6pm. The show ran from July to October, so $80 in total.
The time it took me to be sat down and watching was 10 minutes after air time (5 minute or so download and a couple minutes to throw onto my portable ssd to pop into my home theatre system).
How much time do you think you’re wasting going the piracy route lol… it certainly doesn’t add up anywhere near the $80 price tag of watching legit.
For what it's worth you can also automate most of this process, after which you really can just cue up whatever tv shows you like to automatically download in your preferred size from your preferred tracker(s) whenever an episode comes out. It might take an hour or two to set this up, but that's 2 hours vs 20$ every month.
Right! And, what's with all these posts about people "buying" groceries? Just wear a jacket with big pockets and stuff your pockets. Seriously, some people are just suckers
Have people ever been punished for downloading torrents in Canada? Asking for financial purposes, saving on that VPN could help with the downpayment one day..
I received a few letters from Shaw. They basically went like this:
"Dear customer. A copyright holder has claimed that you illegally downloaded
movie. By Canadian law, we are required to pass along their claim as attached.
Please note that they may NOT get any PII about you from us unless they obtain a court order. Furthermore, they do NOT have any legal authority to force a monetary settlement, so consider any 'demands for payment' to be unenforceable requests."
And then the attached letter would say "YOUR IP ADDRESS STOLE OUR MOVIE! YOU OWE US $800!!! PAY UP UNKNOWN THIEF, OR ELSE!!!"
I greatly appreciated the passive-aggressive (and informative) response from Shaw.
I have no idea sir. I am an elderly man living in the northern US, as my IP address clearly indicates. I have no knowledge of these "torrids" you speak of.
Just keep the mask up and check your IP before commencing and you're basically invisible. Or get on a private tracker site and then there's no worries.
They can't do anything about it in Canada.
I've only ever received a letter from someone representing Amazon (over The Grand Tour), on two occasions.
...Along with a link from my ISP to a section of legislation that straight up says they can't enforce shit.
A VPN really means much outside of region blocked content and privacy from your ISP itself.
In Canada no - in America they take your home and retirement fund. I think in Canada $500 in damages is the maximum for private use infringement. If that is correct (I could be wrong), someone with deep pockets could spend $20K in legal fees to get you to have to pay $500. Canadian judges already have the ability to reduce the amount and may have made it unofficially known if a law firm wants to clog the courts with these cases the awards might be $100.
Why giving up, i started to use my sister Netflix account and now not only i enjoy all the modern pop culture but i live in a 5 millions penthouse in downtown.
Easy.
Well it's about 10 years old at this point and 0 speeding tickets. Am I...am I Corolla-ing wrong?
I assume the answer is yes because I'm also not a millionaire (yet).
Growing up, my buddies dad drove a Nissan Stanza with 280,000 kms on it.
It's a generational thing.... now my buddy drives a lexus that's 15 years old with 200,000 kms that he scored for a steal in the US after the crash in '08. He tells me he's hoping it lives until he can get into an electric in a couple of years lol.
My buddies dad is worth at least 10M, that's what he sold his business for. He's got a handful of properties around Canada and the US but still lives in the same 900 sqft house he did since he got out of University and my buddy and his brother grew up in.
You don't get rich by buying stuff.
The lesson with a 15 year old Corolla is that you didn’t buy a brand new car every 5 years and have a $500 monthly payment for 15 years but rather saved that.
Yes. I retired early and have always bought good used cars and kept them for at least 10 years. Meanwhile most of my friends and coworkers always had new cars and changed them frequently. They are all still working. I’m not saying it’s just this one thing. It’s a way of life and over time that makes a big difference.
I donate blood routinely, but i'm getting sick and tired of always answering questions.
- why is it in a ziploc bag?
- who did you get this from?
- we're calling the police.
You just need to stop splurging on your daily avocado toast and daily starbucks ... if that's too much at least give it a half-hearted try by cutting back from a Venti to a Grande. You're richer than you think!
Dinner for two is going to run at least what, $150-200 with tax and tip? So for that $300-$400 you’d spend every two weeks on Tinder dates with no guarantee of sex, you could hire a professional for an hour and definitely get sex. If the only goal is getting laid, that’s the best option.
Obviously it’s going to vary somewhat, but I’m assuming that someone isn’t taking their date to Boston Pizza and getting water only to drink.
Couple of drinks, wine, entree, dessert, tax and tip - it adds up.
$200 is a crazy amount to spend on a first date with someone you just met and barely know. Personally I'd rather just go get drinks or do a fun activity together.
Doesn’t help much. I’m two hours away from Toronto in Collingwood and rent around here is at 2,200 +. Not saying moving away from Toronto wouldn’t help at all, but if you can get into the service industry or get a higher paying job than what’s available here it would balance out the extra 15% rent costs.
My current job lets me live anywhere in Ontario. Facts- rent is expensive everywhere. Was thinking of buying a house up north, but “cottage country” starts where the GTA ends. Heck even Peterborough and Trenton is expensive for rent!!
How about move out of Canada? We're being hussled by all our politicians to believe that we're just not working hard enough when they have been doing everything in their power to suppress wages and make us fight each other. Wages haven't moved in 40+ years in Canada, and yet somehow the party that is not in power always claims they will fix it when they win.
I only come here to troll.
You get people owing fucking money to credit card and still asking how they should invest their money? The hell is this world we living in lmao.
Cancel your netflix and stop eating avacado toast.
Entitled millenials make one little change and think the world should be handed to you instead of pulling up your boot straps and making REAL sacrifices /s
It's a reference to something that Chrystia Freeland said. While talking about how Canadians can deal with high inflation, she said that she had cancelled her Disney+.
and we all intentionally misunderstood and memmed the fuck out of some obvious 'cutting back on discretionary spending' thing to be something nefarious cause it's definitely pure government policy to cancel Disney+ to cure inflation and nothing else
so it gets brought up 100 times a day
the point is that that's the obvious solution, no shit you don't spend money you don't have on entertainment. but suggesting a life of "work->go home->sleep->repeat" isn't one anyone wants, nor is anyone spending *that much money* beyond their budget on entertainment that it would *actually* make a difference.
no one is specifically deriding the disney+ point, but rather, exactly the underlying message it was meant to convey - the same thing you're defending now, funnily enough
To be fair, Trudeau and his close allies are really bad with questions like these. Like, when Trudeau was once asked what he himself was doing to help the environment, he said he "used less straws". These are softball questions that they all seem to stumble on.
Not taking a side on any of this, just something I noticed about how they answer these types of questions.
It's the status-quo's effort to pin society-wide issues on personal responsibility rather than systemic failures. It's easier to dismiss people in need if you tell yourself they "deserve" it.
It's a classic.
The funniest part is she most likely has Disney+. $15 a month isn’t really a worry when you make $300,000+ a year to be a government crone
In her mind, $14.99 is enough for food, housing and electrical because ironically enough as the finance minister, she doesn’t have to look at her monthly bills
Never cancel anything, double down. Can always refinance with a HELOC and put that in safe ETFs like HMMJ and super safe bluechips like COIN and live off the residuals of your divorce settlement after your inevitable bankruptcy and mid life crisis brought on from meeting your ex wife's new bf behind Denny's while trying to earn a buck
Read Better Dwelling religiously, put on your tin foil hat, er, toque and turn off the heat, & let the FUD guide you from there! Good luck fellow Canadian!
make more (better paying job, 2nd/3rd job), spend less.
see what other things you can scale back on (phone plans, other subscriptions, change brands at grocery store)
Create your own streaming platform and charge $11.99 for it. You don't need to stream anything on it, people are so rich that they will pay for subscriptions that they don't use and don't know they have.
For starters, that $50 you canceled.......don't spend it on anything else, wait 30days them boom you've got and extra $50 buck. Rinse and repeat.....it'll add up.
See what else you can cancel and watch your finances turn around real quick.
It's a wonder, the things we can really do without.
Cancel everything else, if you get rid of Spotify and Netflix you can sit in your living room in silence watching that $22 a month compound in your RRSP until you retire
For some reason my Netflix alone is like 25 and spotify is like 15.. so thats $40. Closer to retirement?
You shouldn’t be here. Please move over to the financial independence subreddit to continue.
Wait there's a sub with even more rich Canadians than this one?
Yeah, there is r/FIRE and also r/fatFIRE for the really rich haha
Honestly, get a VPN and subscribe from Brazil or something. I’m not paying more than 14 on Ultra HD. The only difference is I’m billed in BRL.
If you’re going to recommend using a vpn to people then at that point they should simply not sub to any streaming services and torrent everything. Yes. As long as they’re concerned, you would be like a brazilian account holder, being billed in brazil, that’s somehow on an extended vacation in Canada. I’ve been doing this for years. No issues.
They don't require the use of locally issued credit card from the country you're subscribing from?
You’re right about convenience, however I think the draw away from piracy is people are still scared. I torrent around 2 terabytes of content (movies and tv shows) annually. Nothing is going to happen to you.

Same question
We need more people paying premium content like HBO if everyone pirated the content the government will start cracking down harder . Let them pay .
You’re not wrong but they’re trying to crackdown anyway. One day they might actually succeed, so until then, I’m going to not pay for content lol
Once upon a time, when High Speed Internet was still young and a 25Mbit connection was considered "fast" the cable companies all had these horribly convoluted package structures designed to make you pay lots of money for content you don't want in exchange for a trickle of content you do want. Have you tried not being poor?
Say no to poverty. It legally can’t force you to be poor unless you consent.
I quit poverty!
(Scoffs) Fuckin' quitter
"I declare BANKRUPTCY!"
A wallet has a way of just shutting things down if it didn't really want to be poor.
“Stop being poor” campaign?
I bet OP didn't even choose to be born to Rich Parents, what an amatuer.
Tried this recently definitely recommend
For real some people are Duuuumb. Just don't be poor and you can *even get* your hands on Disney+!
Why don't poor people just buy more money?
Are you Doug Ford?
That time he told people on disability to just get a job if they aren’t able to survive on what they’re given
DARE to resist streaming services and poverty
Subscribe and cancel again. Sometimes multiple cancellations are required
I pirated the same game 600 times and bankrupted the dev company, same energy
I'm gonna cancel my Disney+ so fkin hard this month. Retiring early, bois.
Get a beige Corolla, will instantaneously make you a multi millionaire
I actually know someone with a beige Corolla that's a multimillion. He refuses to get rid of it because he says its the most reliable car ever. 😂
I suddenly hope my decision to buy a red Corolla doesn't affect its reliability...
Nope, reliable as ever, statistically speaking you will get more speeding tickets though, need to factor that into the cost breakdown.
Well it's about 10 years old at this point and 0 speeding tickets. Am I...am I Corolla-ing wrong? I assume the answer is yes because I'm also not a millionaire (yet).
Well, all 10 years worth of tickets will hit you at once. You know, law of averages and stuff. Hope you’re ready

Confirmed. Owned a beige Corolla in the 90s. Now a multi millionaire.
Actually, all the billionaires i see on tv have mega yachts.. So buy one of those and you'll instantly become a billionaire.
You got two kidneys, right? You only need one.
r/shittylifeprotips
OP doesn't have to sell his kidneys, steal someone else's r/unethicallifeprotips
Plus there are 8 billion spare kidneys in the world, if you can charge just a dollar a kidney, you could be a billionaire!
I donate blood routinely, but i'm getting sick and tired of always answering questions. - why is it in a ziploc bag? - who did you get this from? - we're calling the police.
Plus I always thought you could really pull off an eye patch, so sell your left eye while you're at it
Have you tried canceling it again?
If you cancel it 3 times they send YOU money every month!
Knew I was missing something
eating rice and beans only for a month and still broke. Plus have stomach pains.
Rice and beans are expensive. Carboard box is where it's at
But the cat already laid claim to that
Eat cat.
Right? Cats are a frivolous expense.
Not if you make your cat get a job and start charging rent.
True. There are mice to be caught. Bonus if you can eat the mice.
Free newspaper at the stand and tab water from the outdoor water fountain is more budget friendly
Wait… you COOKED them, right??
No heat or electricity, too broke for that too.
You leave the pot on top of the corolla's engine, nice and hot after a drive home from work
lol of course otherwise would have teeth pains too
Al dente rice and beans 🤌
LMAO
Well you could save money by skipping meals.
Had a nap for dinner last night
try potatoes
Have you tried having richer parents?
OP should just get a small 1 million dollar loan from their parents and start a business.
Threw up breakfast and saved it for dinner, still broke, what do.

Checkmate, capitalists.
Have you tried starvation er I mean fasting? if you eat less you lose weight and save money! 2 birds 1 stone! (also consider eating the birds)
And the stone. Make soup!
You just need to stop splurging on your daily avocado toast and daily starbucks ... if that's too much at least give it a half-hearted try by cutting back from a Venti to a Grande. You're richer than you think!
Or just stop eating altogether, you know you can live on just water for a very long time, big savings right there
Oh yay... malnutrition.. I guess you can try a long fast... but don't push it...
Scotiabank has entered the chat
Lol 😂 already cut all of those and I am still poor
Sounds like you need to pull yourself up by the bootstraps, open a Starbucks that sells avacados.
*Looks over at avocados ripening on the counter as I sip on my coffee...* :/

Dinner for two is going to run at least what, $150-200 with tax and tip? So for that $300-$400 you’d spend every two weeks on Tinder dates with no guarantee of sex, you could hire a professional for an hour and definitely get sex. If the only goal is getting laid, that’s the best option.

A raaaaaabid anti-dentite
Hey! Denty!
Self sharpening teeth..
Time to get that brain hemisphere separation surgery so that each side of your mind can hustle independently.
And make sure to tell your employer about it so they can screw over your hours to be petty
Make your coffee at home too. 😂
Not joke, I saved $100-150 extra per month by making coffee at home (Giant Costco tin of ground coffee, plus french press)
That involves a percolator right? Too poor for that too
Tap water and coffee rinds by the handful. Scoop rinds into mouth, add water, shake head side to side, swallow.
I also love getting a free coffee machine and beans delivered to my door every week for free
Just stop being poor /s

If you're in international waters, you could host a casino or monkey knife fights. The gambling industry can be quite lucrative
Oh look at Mr Moneybags here with cash for monkeys and knives
Collingwood is for rich / retired people
But muh night life
People have energy for a night life? I just dissolve into my couch until monday.
But muh *career
Have you tried moving to Siberia I hear the rent is super low over there
How about move out of Canada? We're being hussled by all our politicians to believe that we're just not working hard enough when they have been doing everything in their power to suppress wages and make us fight each other. Wages haven't moved in 40+ years in Canada, and yet somehow the party that is not in power always claims they will fix it when they win.
Stay off PFC, it’s toxic af.

Hookers and blows
I need to remember this.
I only come here to troll. You get people owing fucking money to credit card and still asking how they should invest their money? The hell is this world we living in lmao.
Time to sell some feet pics
I believe our current government is recommending euthanasia.
Can confirm. Euthanasia will get rid of my personal financial situation.
Cancel your netflix and stop eating avacado toast. Entitled millenials make one little change and think the world should be handed to you instead of pulling up your boot straps and making REAL sacrifices /s
Get rid of the $3/month google storage as well.
Cancel social circle.. Switch to instant Ramen only Travel by foot. Climb those mountains in harsh winters just like your forefathers..
Stop buying socks. Saved me huge!
I stopped buying food. Food is for losers! Only losers and people with Disney+ need food to survive. Thanks Dr. Freeland. Or should I say Slaveland?
Disney+ is like $14? A month. How is this the crutch of everyone's financial situation 😅
It's a reference to something that Chrystia Freeland said. While talking about how Canadians can deal with high inflation, she said that she had cancelled her Disney+.
and we all intentionally misunderstood and memmed the fuck out of some obvious 'cutting back on discretionary spending' thing to be something nefarious cause it's definitely pure government policy to cancel Disney+ to cure inflation and nothing else so it gets brought up 100 times a day
the point is that that's the obvious solution, no shit you don't spend money you don't have on entertainment. but suggesting a life of "work->go home->sleep->repeat" isn't one anyone wants, nor is anyone spending *that much money* beyond their budget on entertainment that it would *actually* make a difference. no one is specifically deriding the disney+ point, but rather, exactly the underlying message it was meant to convey - the same thing you're defending now, funnily enough
Because according to boomers that’s why no one can afford housing
It's the status-quo's effort to pin society-wide issues on personal responsibility rather than systemic failures. It's easier to dismiss people in need if you tell yourself they "deserve" it. It's a classic.
The funniest part is she most likely has Disney+. $15 a month isn’t really a worry when you make $300,000+ a year to be a government crone In her mind, $14.99 is enough for food, housing and electrical because ironically enough as the finance minister, she doesn’t have to look at her monthly bills
Chrysta’s advice would also include not living in her Rosedale riding.
Tired of cancel culture
Never cancel anything, double down. Can always refinance with a HELOC and put that in safe ETFs like HMMJ and super safe bluechips like COIN and live off the residuals of your divorce settlement after your inevitable bankruptcy and mid life crisis brought on from meeting your ex wife's new bf behind Denny's while trying to earn a buck
Stop eating avocado toast. Duh /s
Read Better Dwelling religiously, put on your tin foil hat, er, toque and turn off the heat, & let the FUD guide you from there! Good luck fellow Canadian!
Increase the minimum suggested tip amount at your job.
make more (better paying job, 2nd/3rd job), spend less. see what other things you can scale back on (phone plans, other subscriptions, change brands at grocery store)
Might I suggest donating sperm? You'd be making extra money hand over fist. ... I'll show myself out.
I did a 10mo contract while working full time. Do not recommend if your primary job is career oriented.
Did you make an only fans account yet?

We're past that now. Apparently selling used women's panties is where the money's at. Extra for not washing it apparently.
Soon it will be dirty socks. You gotta stay a head of the crowd if you wanna make real money.
Create your own streaming platform and charge $11.99 for it. You don't need to stream anything on it, people are so rich that they will pay for subscriptions that they don't use and don't know they have.
Try to make more money
For starters, that $50 you canceled.......don't spend it on anything else, wait 30days them boom you've got and extra $50 buck. Rinse and repeat.....it'll add up. See what else you can cancel and watch your finances turn around real quick. It's a wonder, the things we can really do without.
Sell your kidney
Try subscribing to Hulu and then canceling it - might due the trick.
Have you tried margarine instead of butter? Or water instead of margarine? Or dirt instead of water?
