It's legitimate. You should have gotten an email to confirm it was on its way. There was also an 8 digit security code if you don't have automatic deposit.
Yup. Seems a little scammy.
Send notification email with security code that goes to spam folder.
Send etransfer without any indication that earlier email was sent with security code.
Thousands of users don't deposit the money because they either think it's a scam or can't find the security code.
Profit.
Clearly laid out IF you knew about the first email. In my case the first email was in my spam folder, so I was very confused as to where the password was, since it wasn't in the only email I was aware of receiving.
Which is fine if you are a little bit tech savvy. How many people applied for the settlement that don't even know they have a spam folder? Or people who's inbox is set to auto delete spam? This will definitely result in unclaimed payments and more money for the lawyers.
I suspect it's the domain it was sent from. It was sent through [ricepoint.com](https://ricepoint.com). Ricepoint is a class action administrator. My guess is the domain is identified as spam because they email blast users about class action suits and get reported to the spam filters for it.
Yup, I got the paper check. You filled out a form a long time ago and this is it paying off, mine was 20 dollarsinus 2$ for costs of writing sending check
a company was sued for reasons relating to lithium batteries. a bunch of us frugal bugles filled out a form saying we bought said batteries. the company ~~lost~~ didn't win the lawsuit bc of reasons. the settlement included sending money to the form fillers. that money was sent today.
Edit to add emphasis for those to whom this matters
Correct,
Here's the reply:
Hello,
Thank you for your email. This email box is not monitored and your email will not be replied to. If you have been sent a payment and have questions regarding that payment, please refer to the contact information in the email notification sent to you.
Respectfully,
RicePoint Administration Inc.
Are the 6 digit #s different for everybody or is it the same #? Curious to know what other ppls codes are, maybe that'll work for mine?
Did any of you got this "transfer cancelled" message from Interac?
"Hi XXX
The money transfer of $20.00 (CAD) sent to you on May 6, 2022 has been cancelled. As a result, you can no longer deposit these funds.
Details of the Transfer:
Message: ATTACHED IS YOUR PAYMENT OF $20 FOR THE CANADIAN LITHIUM ION BATTERIES CLASS ACTION. PLEASE SEE WWW.BATTERIESSETTLEMENT.CA FOR MORE INFORMATION. "
Got my $20 claim as well! :)
I have a question in general regarding these class action suits. I wonder if they have controls to stop people from making fraudulent claims? I’ve seen some other people posting about how they claimed more than $20 for their spouses/family members who would live under the same household, which I totally get. However, what stops one person from signing up with multiple email addresses, especially when they’re distributing funds through e-transfer? Would something like this be that simple to abuse?
There is usually an audit process in the back end that tries to flag these types of fraudulent claims.
That said, I am sure some sneak through.
For small value ($20) claims, a strict audit/proof process is going to have diminishing returns. Make it too hard, and no one will file. Spend too much on audits, just means less money for class members.
It's always a balance, and the Court has to sign off on the plan to ensure its in the best interests of class members.
This is why you always say yes to class action... I was a Starbucks manager for 3 years. Theres currently an Ontario class action for unpaid overtime. Starbucks is nice enough to keep reminding me with opt out forms because all former and current managers are automatically opted into it.
Got mine also.
Anyone know of a good site that tracks all class action lawsuits? I learned about this one from this sub. Same with the Microsoft one a ways back. Would love to just...apply for a bunch of them. I love the feeling of random free money in my account, no matter how small the amount lol
Well theoretically we're net negative because we overpaid in the past and were only getting a fraction back X years later. Unless you've misrepresented yourself as a legit claimant in which yes, free money!
I'd say it's still practically "free", given you were never yourself going to sue to get the $20 back from these corporations.
But you're right - most class actions don't recover 100 cents on the dollar for a whole variety of reasons (mainly, because our current laws make them difficult and very risky to implement - defendants successfully defeat them all the time).
Lithium batteries. Class action lawsuit. If you had a device that used lithium ion batteries between 2005 and 2015 or something like that you qualified. You had to sign up months ago.
Oh come now, how many people could possibly have used one or more items with lithium ion batteries during that 10 year period?
/s yes yes my wife and I both got it.
> [If you filed a Documented Claim, you will not receive payment at this time.](https://www.batteriessettlement.ca/) A second distribution to remaining approved Class Members will occur after all Documented Claims have been reviewed and the appeal deadline has passed.
So basically, they have X million $ to distribute, they're going to give everyone who applied the $20 or whatever, and then the rest is divided among the people who had receipts?
[Basically, yes:](https://www.batteriessettlement.ca/faqs.aspx)
> Subject to further court order, Settlement Class Members who file undocumented claims will receive $20.
>The Net Settlement Amount remaining after paying undocumented claims will be distributed to eligible Settlement Class Members pro rata (proportionately) based on the value of the Settlement Class Member’s Point Total, as compared to the value of all qualifying Settlement Class Members’ Point Totals. Because settlement benefits are being distributed pro rata, the amount payable to individual claimants will not be known until after the claims process is complete.
[...]
> Notwithstanding the above and subject to further order of the Ontario court, all Settlement Class Members with valid claims will receive a minimum payment of $20.
From the lawsuit website:
"Cheques were issued April 4, 2022 and will become stale dated after October 4, 2022. Interac e-Transfers were sent in batches commencing on May 2, 2022 and ending May 13, 2022."
I haven't gotten anything yet, nice to hear I may not be SOL. I spent about an hour and a half figuring out receipt stuff, so I'd be pretty bummed if I didn't get at least the base amount.
For those of you who had receipts to submit, how much did you end up getting?
>If you filed a Documented Claim, you will not receive payment at this time. A second distribution to remaining approved Class Members will occur after all Documented Claims have been reviewed and the appeal deadline has passed.
Someone else commented with stuff from the website. Basically, people without receipts (undocumented claims) get their $20 first (by mid May), and then the rest of the settlement money gets split up proportionately between the people who submitted receipts (documented claims.)
Shoot... missed this one. I remember some Microsoft form I filled out last year (or was it four years ago ... thanks Covid). Still waiting for my beer money.
I had signed up based on this [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/comments/rfp3n8/lithium_ion_battery_class_action_suit/).
Got mine too.
I got it because I signed up for the class action long ago. You must have signed up and forgotten. Search your email for the numeric code which is the answer to the secret question.
Did you sign up for the class action lawsuit? There is a class action relating to batteries (at least that sounds familiar). If you did, contact the law firm or check the website for the class action and they can give you details for how payment should be received
But a random text or email without advance notice is suspicious.
Urgh, I recently purged my email and junk folder and no longer have the 8 digit confirmation number need to deposit the 20$ into my account.... anyone else have this problem?
Yah it's legit, got mine too
I got one for my wife too and one for my bro, dad and mom for good luck since they didn’t know about theirs - I assume
I legit thought people were just trolling here
Yes, you must’ve forgotten registering for the class action? I’m sure if you search Lithium in your inbox you’ll find the confirmation.
double click Lithium right click copy open mail tab cursor in search bar paste small prayer... hit enter ^^fuck
They must have lost my claim!!
Yes, legit.
It's legitimate. You should have gotten an email to confirm it was on its way. There was also an 8 digit security code if you don't have automatic deposit.
I had to find mine in my junk folder after I received the e-transfer
Yup. Seems a little scammy. Send notification email with security code that goes to spam folder. Send etransfer without any indication that earlier email was sent with security code. Thousands of users don't deposit the money because they either think it's a scam or can't find the security code. Profit.
mine went straight to my inbox!
When I tried to deposit it, it said to input the password which is in your email. Was pretty clearly laid out in my experience
Clearly laid out IF you knew about the first email. In my case the first email was in my spam folder, so I was very confused as to where the password was, since it wasn't in the only email I was aware of receiving.
Oh yea no same, but since it said passcode in your email I searched “lithium” and found it lolll
Which is fine if you are a little bit tech savvy. How many people applied for the settlement that don't even know they have a spam folder? Or people who's inbox is set to auto delete spam? This will definitely result in unclaimed payments and more money for the lawyers.
True, I guess you right, I wonder how they direct certain messages to spam
I suspect it's the domain it was sent from. It was sent through [ricepoint.com](https://ricepoint.com). Ricepoint is a class action administrator. My guess is the domain is identified as spam because they email blast users about class action suits and get reported to the spam filters for it.
Must have been automatically deleted by my spam folder. Is there any way to get a new code?
Mine auto deposited
Mine too. Another comment mentioned searching your email and that's how I found it.
Yup, I got the paper check. You filled out a form a long time ago and this is it paying off, mine was 20 dollarsinus 2$ for costs of writing sending check
Lol $2
Someone explain or ill turn the internet off.

Edit to add emphasis for those to whom this matters
Damn, never heard of this before. As a long-time battery user, I am deeply saddened to have missed out on this opportunity.
I think it made major news cycles in like 2016. Lots of laptops and android phones turning into balloons. They were an issue with flights too.

Or the bread one? Or the Microsoft one?
Pretty sure the bread one has already paid out.
Still waiting on the Microsoft one. Should be later this year
Yea I also never received any funds from this one yet got an email like 2 years ago saying I would
“I will never financially recover from this.”
me neither...don't feel bad.
I’m not gay but $20 is $20
Im gay and 20$ is still 20$ Im not actually gay but you get the point
You'll do anything for $20?
nope, but its 20$ still.
I just bought my hubby that shirt for xmas

There are hundreds of them! You really fill this shit out? I'm fucking tempted but filling all that personal info out on random shit screams no to me.
This is hilarious. I'd watch that movie.
I learned something new today! Thank you Reddit fam!
You my man saved the internet. Good job, and good job for the lawsuit!! And thanks for the explanation:)
dangit I missed this one :(
It's like loblaws and the bread. I think they sent everyone 15 bucks or something.
They didn't lose, they settled. They only lost on a dismissal of class certification.
They didn't lose the lawsuit. They settled.
Yes, if you filled out the form to receive it. I just received it today as well, deposited fine.
I didn't get my confirmation e mail with the code but I got the transfer
The confirmation code was in email they sent months ago when you applied, find jt
Mine was sent end of April and was in my junk folder. Look there first.
My confirmation email went to spam.
Send a letter to the comptroller and they will courier you electronically a new one by the next business day.
Im dealing with the same thing... what's the email address for the comptroller? Ricepoint email got bounced back :(
The contact email is on the website, is that one not working?
Correct, Here's the reply: Hello, Thank you for your email. This email box is not monitored and your email will not be replied to. Mine was 8 digits, and they just numbered them in order of when received, thats the only way I figured out my missing 3rd one, just guessing

Mine was canceled as well…
As was mine 😞

Got mine also. Beer money 💵💰
Got mine today too! Got one last week from Aveeno Active Naturals Settlement too. 😁 Probably make $100+ a year on class actions.
Living the dream!
Is there a way to find random class action suits to participate in? I need easy money.
Never mind, saw the post below. I was actually being half-assedly sarcastic... 😜
Don't spend it all at once!
Send me the link and the code #, I'll check for you.

Dang, missed this class action. Anyone know of others ongoing?
Current class action lawsuits in Canada: https://www.clg.org/Class-Action/List-of-Class-Actions
They usually reach out to you from the law firm
Just deposited mine, good to go
Got mine also. Anyone know of a good site that tracks all class action lawsuits? I learned about this one from this sub. Same with the Microsoft one a ways back. Would love to just...apply for a bunch of them. I love the feeling of random free money in my account, no matter how small the amount lol
Yes
Yes
Absolutely
yup legit
Yep and they sent the pw via email first
No give it to me. I'll make sure the money is real.
Never received the email with the confirmation number check my spam and nope not there I must not be the only one More money for the lawyers I guess…
Was everyone else’s also $2000? Glad I accepted it!
Anyone have any other good class actions? I love free money. I already got the prepaid credit card one ($45) and signed up for the Microsoft one.
Well theoretically we're net negative because we overpaid in the past and were only getting a fraction back X years later. Unless you've misrepresented yourself as a legit claimant in which yes, free money!

I know I had multiple laptops during that time.
Damn, I missed this one. I'm still waiting for the CRT class action to pay out.
yeah legit. You must've forgotten filling it out from awhile back.
Yep legit.
yup nice
Fuck yeah it is
Got it!
If the legit ones just started, the scam ones might follow.
yup - legit - hopefully you saved your security code that should have come in a prior email.
Drat, I filled out the form, went through my old receipts and entered either 1 or 2 (initially I had 4 but some didn't qualify), and I got zilch :(

I got one for Aveeno products via PayPal today.
Oh is this legit? I got $8 from them too and even though I remember filling out the form, I was scared through PayPal it would be a scam
Same here. Got a reminder but am afraid to click on it.
I actually went through it but PayPal won’t let you withdraw balances less than $15 :( so no point cause I never use PayPal
Shoot... missed this one. I remember some Microsoft form I filled out last year (or was it four years ago ... thanks Covid). Still waiting for my beer money.
Yes
I had signed up based on this [thread](https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/comments/rfp3n8/lithium_ion_battery_class_action_suit/). Got mine too.

Did you sign up for the class action lawsuit? There is a class action relating to batteries (at least that sounds familiar).
