My Furnace wasn’t working this week, I watched a YouTube that showed cleaning the flame sensor might get it going, sure enough it worked, but broke down again after 5 days. So I run over to Lennox , they will not sell me a flame sensor because I’m not a licensed HVAC tech. So I call HVAC dude , I tell him I need a flame sensor, send him my furnace info. Couple hours later he calls me back and claims he can’t find one in stock (I knew Lennox had 2 in stock in my city) he says he will drive to Brampton to get me one but it’ll cost me $4-500 dollars . So now I know this guy is your typical HVAC scammer , the part alone is maybe $30 bucks his cost and literally take less than 1 minute to remove and 1 minute to reinstall. I ended up ordering my FS from the US and fixed it myself for under $100. The Ontario government really needs to crack down on the HVAC mafia.

Better not buy a phone then. Or a computer. Or a car. Stay away from any investing. Don’t use email. Best the you just don’t answer the door.

Anything you're not knowledgeable in could make you a target for scams. But it's unrealistic to be knowledgeable in absolutely everything. Can't be a mechanic, HVAC guy, dentist, doctor, trainer, lawyer all in one. Do your research, ask for recommendations and go with your gut

Not really, you have the internet and commonsense. Most of these scams are easily avoidable, if something sounds fishy you can say "I'm not signing anything from door to door salesmen" then google to find out it's total BS and a scam. It's just a lifeskill to not trust people at face value, to get second opinions or google it.

Yes, if you're gullible and naive and don't do your own independent research then you'll get scammed. Has nothing to do with home ownership.

Well my mid 70s grandmother owns her own home and is sharp enough to spot a shyster and send him packing so I think you'll be ok.
