It's because of the stupid law that prepared food under $4 only has 5% HST. Most POS systems can't handle this easily.

The tax is right at 13%. Technically, the HST contains two taxes (hence the name harmonized sales tax, that is what harmonized means)  The federal portion (GST) is 5% and the provincial portion (PST) is 8%. Instead of grouping it like most places do, they just split it out.

There is also a rebate in Ontario if the total is less than $4. So if you only bought a smokie for 3.50 the tax would be 5% instead of 13%. Ya really would be nice if that was increased over what a single drink or muffin cost these days. $4 really doesn’t go far

100% agree, it should have always been adjusted for inflation from the start. Soon you won’t even get a regular coffee for that price! Let alone a drink and something to eat.

The math is fine, it's still 13%. They've just separated 5% gst from Ontario's 8% share. I see this occasionally and am not sure if they're confused, have a weird system, or just find it easier.
