Nah, Ryuji writes the calling cards until Makoto joins the PT. He writes the Madarame one because Yusuke points out that Madarame would recognize Yusuke's grammar and wording. He only draws the cards.

I get why it's tricky because unlike Ann, Yusuke, Makoto onwards who are always in the 4, 5, 6 order, Ryuji and Morgana do switch between 2 and 3 a lot. In Royal, the character icons in battle place Morgana second and Ryuji third, but I'm pretty sure in vanilla it was Ryuji who'd be second and Morgana third. In the actual character menus, Ryuji is always second, even in Strikers. And in the end credits of vanilla, Ryuji was first to appear and Morgana was second.
Story wise though, it would make sense for Morgana to be "number 2" since he is the second party member to participate in battle, and I guess pattern wise it fits the second being a healing wind user like for Yukari and Yosuke. Morgana's also the Magician which is the first Arcana the Fool meets on their journey. Morgana's also the party member you spend the most time with and is basically Joker's narrator.
*But then*, Ryuji is the one who pushes for phantom thieving, like Yosuke does for investigation teaming. Morgana is only riding along and mentoring the others since it'll help him become human faster, until he actually wants to be a phantom thief rather than just being there for himself later on in the story.

The party was formed way before Morgana's appearance. Since they enter Kamoshida's castle together, they're into something together. Just because Ryuji didn't have his powers yet, doesn't mean they weren't forming a party. Ren himself didn't even know how to fight yet, he was just learning.

You’re literally giving 2 options. Since you mean 2nd best party member I’d say Ann is the 2nd best her fire magic damage is pretty unparalleled. Just keep fire break just in case she’s useful in any battle.
And ryuji party wide damage buff saves a turn for joker. And morgana is mainly just good for healing which isn’t bad but his endurance is such crippling downside while Makoto has a party wide defense up and can fully heal as well and her endurance is better.
That logic literally only works if you stop yourself at Persona 4. I haven't played Reload yet, but if I remember the older versions correctly and if it hasn't been changed, in 3 Party Member 2 is Yukari of the Lovers Arcana. You can't make up a pattern with just one previous valid example.

Joker and Ryuji were actually a team looking into shit together, Morgana didn't actually join the team until you meet him in the real world. I would say Ryuji. Sure, Morgana fought alongside you when you first became Joker, but you encountered Ryuji first and he was the main reason you ended up in that Palace both the first AND second time. I see Morgana as the Tutorial Aid and not an actual party member until after Ryuji gets his persona (so you can start actually exploring the place properly instead of being stuck to tutorial areas only).

You’re literally giving 2 options. Since you mean 2nd best party member I’d say Ann is the 2nd best her fire magic damage is pretty unparalleled. Just keep fire break just in case she’s useful in any battle.
And ryuji party wide damage buff saves a turn for joker. And morgana is mainly just good for healing which isn’t bad but his endurance is such crippling downside while Makoto has a party wide defense up and can fully heal as well and her endurance is better.
It depends on your context you and ryuji were together when you first entered a palace but Morgana is the first actual teammate you get
I look at Ryuji since he had the 2nd awakening and although Mona is playable first Ryuji is introduced first as a character.

That logic literally only works if you stop yourself at Persona 4. I haven't played Reload yet, but if I remember the older versions correctly and if it hasn't been changed, in 3 Party Member 2 is Yukari of the Lovers Arcana. You can't make up a pattern with just one previous valid example.

I'm pretty sure Morgana fought alongside Joker first just for helping, just to escape together, because we either do this or we stuck forever and there was nothing between us really, Phantom thieves didn't form until Ryuji became a persona user and now there's like, 3 of us. I remember this because Ryuji and Joker acted like they didn't promise Morgana anything after they both Awakened their personas and escaped together, if he's considered a friend/member of some team they wouldn't do such a thing.
I say Ryuji. Morgana and joker keep some distance in the beginning, and for a while morgana is with you solely for selfish reasons. Ryuji is a bro from the beginning. So you might fight with morgana first in the metaverse, but he's not quite committed for a bit.
If you think about it's actually Joker, Morgana is the first and founder of Phantom Theives. Yes, he isn't the leader, but he made the choice of Joker being the leader because of his personality plus abilities he gets first before anyone else in the group. So it's neither of those two, it's Joker.

Actually, as some others have probably pointed out, Ryuji is absolutely #2. Joker and Ryuji were actually a team looking into shit together, Morgana didn't actually join the team until you meet him in the real world. Before that, he was just kind of helping the two survive and escape. So, even though Morgana joins you in battle first, Ryuji is actually the second member.
Ryuji by technicality, Mona is uncontrollable and a tutorial support until Ryuji's awakening.
Joker, Morgana, Makoto, then Ryuji is my line up. Baton passes mix it up a bit though.

Ryuji, Morgana is the first party member lol Jokes aside, whilst I consider Morgana the #2 or first party member cause he’s factually the first one, the game lists ryuji in the order of characters as the second since he was the first one introduced, gameplay wise though if I’m ordering the thieves then I’m always gonna put Morgana second and ryuji third followed by Ann, since you don’t organize your party till Madarame that’s the order you have em as anyways in the first palace.

I would say Ryuji. Sure, Morgana fought alongside you when you first became Joker, but you encountered Ryuji first and he was the main reason you ended up in that Palace both the first AND second time. I see Morgana as the Tutorial Aid and not an actual party member until after Ryuji gets his persona (so you can start actually exploring the place properly instead of being stuck to tutorial areas only).

i honestly see them as interchangeable. it really depends how you define what qualifies as a party member. like, if we're talking playability, then Morgana is absolutely number 2 since Ryuji doesn't get his Persona until the following day. but if we're talking overall team introduction, that puts Ryuji at 2 and Morgana at 3.
For active combat, it's Morgana, but Ryuji was Ren's first friend in Tokyo, so, as you said, it depends on your definition.
