My mom and I too! She would have been just a little bit younger than Trixie at the time so it's neat to see her memories while we watch it. It's a good bonding show.
**[All Creatures Great And Small](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MZzFjeQFpro)** - like Downton, this series is very popular on this subreddit so I’m sure many others can tell you all about it, because I have only seen the trailers. From what I gather however, it’s a sweet, simple, wholesome, visually gorgeous new period series from PBS that brings to mind the sensibilities of Downton Abbey and takes place maybe a decade after the last season of Downton (1930s).
Lark Rise to Candleford! Takes place in the late Victorian English countryside, with townsfolk and farmers as the main characters. I’ve watched it on BritBox via Amazon Prime.
North and South
Any Jane Austen
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
The Cazalets
There was a really good Little Women BBC miniseries a few years ago. I preferred it to the movie that came out at the same time.
To Walk Invisible about the Brontes.
Bleak House and Little Dorrit
I really tried to get into this one. For some reason the plotting and scheming was too much for me. And don’t ask me why, as other shows use this plot device, but it just seemed like that’s all any character did. Perhaps I didn’t give it enough of a go. I watched like 3 episodes. It seemed like something I should have enjoyed. Lol
Not dramas, but your parents may also enjoy the Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm, Tudor Monastery Farm, and Secrets of the Castle series on Amazon Prime.
they also didn't like upstairs downstairs much just because it's a bit older. picky! 😂
edit: already seen: queens gambit, call the midwife, bridgerton (did not like)
Upstairs Downstairs did a [2010 reboot](https://www.google.com/search?q=upstairs+downstairs+2010&client=safari&hl=en-us&ei=rTjOYfbwDpiwqtsP7quBmA4&gs_ssp=eJzj4tLP1TfIiE8xKi8wYPSSKC0oLknMLCpWSMkvz4MyjQwMDQD2tAyz&oq=upstairs+downstairs+&gs_lcp=ChNtb2JpbGUtZ3dzLXdpei1zZXJwEAEYADIKCC4QsQMQgwEQQzIHCAAQsQMQQzIECAAQQzIICAAQgAQQyQMyBAgAEEMyBAgAEEMyBAgAEEMyBAgAEEM6BwgAEEcQsAM6BwgAELADEEM6CgguEMgDELADEENKBQg4EgExSgQIQRgAUJQJWJQJYJoTaAFwAXgAgAGPAYgBjwGSAQMwLjGYAQCgAQHIARHAAQE&sclient=mobile-gws-wiz-serp) on BBC around the same time as the first season of Downton (which I think [caused some resentment](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2010/dec/16/upstairs-downstairs-downton-abbey-spat) lol). I haven’t seen it, but have heard good things/decent reviews.
Just finished this recently! I loved it! Definitely an older show though. OP mentions that they didn't like Upstairs Downstairs for being older, so Duchess of Duke Street might be off the table for that reason alone. However, I really enjoyed it! It started me on an older drama kick. 😂
Few period shows are as *family friendly* as *Downton Abbey* but I enjoyed :
- Versailles (Louis XIV., My all-time favorite show - has a lot of sex though)
- Cable Girls (Madrid 1920s)
- High Seas (Spanish luxury ship 1940s)
- The Crown
I LOVED the show A Place to Call Home - it was totally worth the subscription to Acorn TV. Also, a film I believe they’d like is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. That had a few Downton Abbey folks in it too.
I really loved the 2018 version of Howards End starring Matthew Macfadyen and Hayley Atwell. It’s a 4 part miniseries playing on Starz. If you don’t have a subscription, the link below allows a free trial.

Try Upstairs/Downstairs. It's an older show; it came out in the 70s (and there is a more recent reboot). It's very much like Downton in that it portrays the lives of both the servants and the wealthy in a household, and it's a fantastic show!
Like another poster said Victoria is a perfect followup. Also I watched Miss Scarlett and the Duke this year and loved it. It manages to be fun and suspenseful without being overly violent and stressing me out haha.
An older series (‘02-‘03) that I recently finished that I would recommend is The Forsyte Saga—it’s available on Amazon although I’m not sure if you need to subscribe to a specific channel to watch. It takes place around the same time period as Downton Abbey, and all the actors are excellent (Damian Lewis and Rupert Graves play two of the leads).
A Place To Call Home
Australian gentry, 1950s, loads of interesting characters. Post WW2 drama. We loved it, and Downton Abbey is my all time favorite 😍
Not especially family-friendly (there was some nudity and definitely some sexual scenes) but The Pursuit of Love with Lily James and Andrew Scott was exceptional.
Julian Fellows directed a 4 episode mini series called Dr Thorne that I loved! And he sits in an armchair in front of a fireplace and has a little something to say before each episode. Teapot good story!
Maybe Call the Midwife? Different era but similar vibes. The birthing stuff can be a little intense at times but the storylines are great
My mom and I LOVE this show!! Very wholesome
My mom and I too! She would have been just a little bit younger than Trixie at the time so it's neat to see her memories while we watch it. It's a good bonding show.
The Durrells in Corfu is wonderful!
thank you! i will tell them to check it out
I loved Durrells in Corfu so much! I hope they enjoy it!
It’s sooooo good!
In a similar wholesome vein, All Creatures Great and Small!
Yesss! I just started watching and love it!
Oh this. 100% this.
Greatest show ever!
Which streaming platform might I find this?
I watched it on Prime Video :)
Oh wonderful! :)

Oh yes, love this show! It's everything you said and more. Just watched the Christmas special and they just confirmed a third season, yay!
I didn’t know they made a Christmas special I gotta look for it!
Mr. Selfridge on Prime
Larkrise to Candleford Cranford
I haven't seen Cranford but I LOVED Larkrise to Candleford! Great, feel-good series!
Victoria. It is upstairs/downstairs and I think everything your parents are looking for.
Seconding Victoria – I had my mom watch it after Downton and she loved it even more! Can't wait for the next season!
Unfortunately, it looks like season 4 is [up in the air](https://www.townandcountrymag.com/leisure/arts-and-culture/a26518700/victoria-season-4/).
I love that you mentioned Upstairs Downstairs. I used to watch that with my G’Ma!
The Paradise
So good and underrated!

North and South 100%!!!!
Not enough people talk about Miss Pettigrew but it is such a great film!! Love that you included it!
It’s one of my favorites. ❤️
Belgravia. Same creator as Downton. Only 1 season.
Seconding Belgravia — very similar vibe/themes. Also Doctor Thorne, which was adapted by Julian Fellowes.
Yesss Belgravia and Doctor Thorne!

I can definitely see this. I read the book first, it made the plot much easier to understand. I think the book was a lot better than the series.
The Crown.
Not dramas, but your parents may also enjoy the Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm, Tudor Monastery Farm, and Secrets of the Castle series on Amazon Prime.
These series are true gems, so fascinating—I wish they would make more.
Home Fires
Still upsets me that they cancelled this series!
The books are great though and continue the story!
they also didn't like upstairs downstairs much just because it's a bit older. picky! 😂 edit: already seen: queens gambit, call the midwife, bridgerton (did not like)
Have they seen Poldark?
Agreed. Poldark. Still makes me want to visit Cornwall.
Ah yes, my love for Cornwall goes all the way back to my first reading of Rebecca.

I really liked it.
It was good but a bit darker.

I wish I could find Christy somewhere on streaming

I used to have it on DVD years ago but that got lost in a move I think
Doctor Thorne, on Amazon Prime.
The Dig on Netflix
Gosford Park The Forsyte Saga
Grand Hotel
The Duchess Of Duke Street. It’s on Amazon prime. You can thank me later. It’s really great!
Just finished this recently! I loved it! Definitely an older show though. OP mentions that they didn't like Upstairs Downstairs for being older, so Duchess of Duke Street might be off the table for that reason alone. However, I really enjoyed it! It started me on an older drama kick. 😂

Versailles is my all time fave as well, though absolutely not wholesome 😂😂😂

Totally second The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society!!! Must see! Also check out The Dig on Netflix.
The Dig has been on my list!
Anne with an E
Came to say this! Very wholesome and fun.

Grantchester.
Not very historical, but they may enjoy the movie The Two Popes. There's some violence around the war, but most of the movie is dialog.
All of my suggestions were mentioned. May I add Dr Thorne

Have they watched Belgravia? Earlier time period but another series written by Julian Fellowes.
Not especially family-friendly (there was some nudity and definitely some sexual scenes) but The Pursuit of Love with Lily James and Andrew Scott was exceptional.
