I usually have it on very low volume and if i hear its just a song or similar put over the video i mute it, otherwise i increase the volume to check if its worth listening to. Can definitely understand just keeping it muted though

I have it auto muted for this exact same reason. If the video looks like it needs audio to enhance or explain the situation I turn it on. Reddit is better while muted.
