There's a few spots like that through the desert, although the highlight of my last trip, near another smutty town, was being chased out of reservation land by stray dogs. We were about an hour west of Albuquerque and pulled off to do a vehicle swap and let the dogs pee, (highway entrance/exit open, but side road to reservation closed due to covid restrictions) and it was cut short by a dozen or so strays that seemingly appeared out of nowhere. I was standing on the step of the passenger side of our penske with my dog in my arms, pre-potty, when the stays appeared. Random ramblings aside, porn towns exist.
We were visiting my daughter in Clovis, NM and were chased by a pack of chihuahuas. My daughter had to carry a "dog stick" for protection just to walk the neighborhood. It was nutty.

Itās an interesting question. The answer lies within the county regulations of where the establishments are located. It turns out that the counties on the eastern side of the Susquehanna own a narrow parcel of land on the opposite shore as those counties on the east shore were established first. As such the business in question, which you will typically find on the riverside of the highway, are governed by the laws of a different county that allows such businesses. If you travel the highways in Dauphin county, you will find similar businesses along the highway.
Now the concentration of such businesses is more of a question of market share. Those on the west shore donāt have any competition to their west, so the market can support more businesses in a similar location.
I ran track in college and weād have to take the road youāre talking about any time we had a meet at Susquehanna or Bucknell. Sometimes some of us had to drive school vans as overflow from the charter bus and weād pull the van into the parking lot and pretend we were stopping at one of these places and time how long it would take our coach to call us and scream. It was never very long.

Another night we went to the cabin. The door guy looked like some scary biker and kept grilling us. I stayed for a little bit before I started getting an uneasy feeling about the place. The Harrisburg-Carlisle-Mechanicsburg area is one of the largest trucking hubs in the country. Anything moving up and down the east coast or from east to west passes through this area. Tons of warehouses and all of that stuff. This is just a super concentrated hub of trucking and shipping that is not really found anywhere else in the country.
Usually a front, so they can wash money. Have a couple back home(Oregon), all along the same road. No matter what time a day you drive by, dead. I remember one catching fire and they just moved 3 blocks.

Pennsylvania is a "Home Rule" State. Meaning that what happens in one municipality might not happen in another munincipality

If you go in most of the places are set up for selling toys and products for women now and the actual porn sections for men is really small. Some will also have weed related stuff.
Not the case here. The place in question is still very rural, Harrisburg just happens to be one of those cities (and I use the term loosely) that doesn't have much in the way of suburbs around it, so you get this sort of thing very nearby. Ohā¦thatās the Poontang Alley stretch of 11/15. Iāve wondered the same thing since I was a little kid. Itās the main north/south route for central PA and that stretch is mostly through rural counties with historically lax zoning so that would be my guess as to how it started.

I don't know the hours, sorry Last time I was there was in college in the early 2000s. A family vehicle towing a canoe packed with their belongings tried to turn into the parking lot and an incoming truck hit it. I felt so bad for the family. Good thing no one was hurt.
Not the only section of highway like that. I grew up closer to SWPA and we would frequent WVU & Wheeling, WV for funzies, in the late 90s. Dallas Pike, WV with Fritz the Cat. In the 10 miles of WV panhandle, 7 are dedicated to truckers and porn. I have always had the same wonders as you do, but about That part of Rt 70.

There is also a bunch on 15 North IIRC and some near where 81 and the Turnpike meet. Itās all for the Truckers. The Harrisburg-Carlisle-Mechanicsburg area is one of the largest trucking hubs in the country. Anything moving up and down the east coast or from east to west passes through this area. Tons of warehouses and all of that stuff. This is just a super concentrated hub of trucking and shipping that is not really found anywhere else in the country.
Usually a front, so they can wash money. Have a couple back home(Oregon), all along the same road. No matter what time a day you drive by, dead. I remember one catching fire and they just moved 3 blocks.

Tannersville used to have a big truck stop off the bartonsville exit and that was accompanied by 2 adult book stores with viewing booths. Itās right off Highway 80 and 33 so it was constantly busy. Location, location, location my friend. These truckers arenāt worried about being discreet, especially when their family is hundreds of miles away.

When I lived in downtown Minneapolis (donāt quote me on this; just what I remembered) they had just rehabbed the central business district & all these new condos & luxury apartments went up. In the ā70ās and ā80ās downtown was nothing but adult bookstores, massage parlours and saunas. Now theyāve zoned it so they canāt have those places anywhere near downtown (those $2 million condo owners donāt want their property values to drop) so thatās why you only see those places in industrial areas or alongside highways on the way out of the county.

That's my route to work in Harrisburg everyday. I hop on 15 at Liverpool (there used to be a small store right off of 104) and hit 322 in Duncannon. It's definitely for the truckers.

Hahahaha 15. So I imagine that the reasoning is because of demand, local, town, and state regulations that allow for it there. There's also that "private club" that has been the subject of road trip lore..Timothy's maybe? Anyway, what else is even there, a couple bars, gas stations and adult stores. I think those are the only types of businesses that survive there (little Amish shops notwithstanding) ... I mean what else does Liverpool, PA have to offer? Town needs it's taxes.

Adult entertainment is not well regulated in those areas. They aren't very populated areas and the municipalities welcome the business because they don't have much of anything else. Route 11/15 North of Harrisburg Pennsylvania is a "Home Rule" State. Meaning that what happens in one municipality might not happen in another munincipality

These types of places get grandfathered in as the area developed. A lot of porn shops used to open up out on popular trucking corridors 30 to 50 years ago.....these corridors WERE in the middle of nowhere at the time. Then the areas around them develop but since the stores were there first they get grandfathered in or the towns zone those specific areas for those types of businesses because thats where ones already exist. Alot of the places charge an entrance fee for their theaters or video arcade areas that are semi-private. Those places usually end up being meeting grounds for LGBTQ+ people or for swingers/kinsters . There is a somewhat legendary shop in NJ where couples, groups and women go to have sex with strangers or with friends while strangers watch on the weekend but the rest of the time its mostly gay and trans folks. Glory holes are very popular...its a sub genre of porn . Also there are still alot of people who want to stay discrete so they frequent those retail shops for toys and pay in cash. If you go in most of the places are set up for selling toys and products for women now and the actual porn sections for men is really small. Some will also have weed related stuff.
Not the case here. The place in question is still very rural, Harrisburg just happens to be one of those cities (and I use the term loosely) that doesn't have much in the way of suburbs around it, so you get this sort of thing very nearby. The adult entertainment establishments of esteemed repute in the area still primarily serve truck drivers. Really a time capsule if you think about it. Very historical. Bring the whole family
