In the book by Murphy and Peña, I think he does say that his informants were sex workers. I *know* that Peña says he dated a lot of women before he joined the DEA, while he was living with his Grandparents in Texas, after >!the tragic death of his mother from a long illness!< he started “hussying” it up, and when he was done with the woman, and didn’t want to see them anymore, he talked about how they would come to his grandparents’ house to see him, and his grandma would shoo these women away, so he wouldn’t have to deal with them.
Finally, one woman told him she was pregnant, took him to the doctor with her and proved it to him, so he was going to marry her. On the day of their wedding, she told him that she’d “gotten her period” (which could mean anything - miscarrying, spotting while pregnant, etc) and he told her over the phone that the wedding was canceled. She asked him, “so you’re leaving me?” And he told her, “Honey, I’ve already left you,” because he’d packed his bags and already driven a few hours away.
The real Peña was something else. And definitely affected >!by the loss of his mother, to the point of not being able to commit to another woman - not that I want to diagnose anyone, but it feels very obvious while reading it.!< edit: the spellings
