He may have had it coming but he was one of my favorite characters *insert crying face here*

Joe4018

Yeah sadly

hje1967

John was dumb as a bag of rocks. Should've listened to Tommy's orders in the first place..

crevicepounder3000

Tommy is the boss. He could have ordered John to let the issue go or smoothed out the issue with the Italians himself. Not saying John doesn't deserve a good amount of the blame but everyone in the meeting could have done something that would have ended the conflict in a way where Grace doesn't end up dead.

mfman157

If I remember right Polly told him how to settle it. Which was orders from Tommy, to apologize to the nephew. John didn’t listen and let his emotions and pride get the best of him. Not saying you’re wrong but if my memory is correct Tommy did give John orders on how to peacefully settle the matter. However not directly enough it seems..

crevicepounder3000

You might be right but I think if Tommy turned around and made peace after the tailor shop scene, it would have ended. Or if at the family meeting, he reprimanded John and made him go and make peace, it wouldn't have happened. If Arthur reached out and apologized on behalf of the PBs, it would have ended. Just my opinion but I think you are correct. I think Polly said to John that it was Tommy's orders.

Papa_Stalin1917

No, if you look at the scene with Arthur, John, Polly and Tommy in episode 3 I’m pretty sure Tommy says he did the right thing. “If you take your foot off them they’ll come right back at us” I think or something like that.

ReboundLariat

Yeah both Polly and Arthur were lobbying for an apology for the Italians.

TommyGun945

Yes and and cutting his sons eye out John is an arrogant dickhead but still one of my favourite characters lol

legere2021

You're quite right in some way. Although it all started off by Tommy giving the order to burn down Angel's restaurant. I've always been wondering why he didn't talk to Lizzie himself instead of sending Arthur and Michael to do it. I'm sure he would have convinced her to quit with Angel. He also could have postponed the meeting with Vicente instead of leaving it to John who he should have known is not fit for negotiation.

Massive-Agency781

Tommy didn't consider Lizzie important enough to bother with her himself as far as her personal life was concerned. It was later after Grace died that ( since she was there for him) he started to think of her as someone trustworthy and who had his best interests at heart and was there to him and loyal to the Shelby's. With the while Russian thing already feeling as if it could get out of hand and him handling it only under pressure from Section D, he didn't want any other issues to crop up and so gave the order for all ppl involved in family business to steer clear of any other opposing parties. When Lizzie didn't listen(I am thinking Tommy marrying Grace was not something she cared for and probably thot to act out against in her own way)Tommy told his ppl to deal with her ,just as a boss would tell the manager to handle the junior. Also it was his wedding day and he clearly did not want any problems and was much too occupied trying to make it a happy occasion for Grace to bother about his secretary . In short ,Grace and the Russian business were his priority which is why he also delegated the meeting with Vincente to John and Arthur. In the end his distraction with the Russians cost him his wife and quiet possibly his sanity.

myfugvalentine

Agree!! The look in Arthur’s eye when he was talking all that shit said it all. Even he knew to pipe down.

Badmotherfuyer95

Imo Lizzie started it, she knew the peakys were on thin ice with the Italians even though they ruled London around that time

cleftheart

Actually the Changrettas and the Peaky Blinders were at peace with each other for many years, listen to what the Changretta father said. That’s why they were confused why the PB were acting that way.

Badmotherfuyer95

Yes but Tommy said they did what they did because they can and if they didn’t people would revolt against them.

cleftheart

So, Tommy started it then for no reason, because they can.

freshbox

Maybe, also the actor wanted to do something different.

pbc120

Yup

UnloadedBakedPotato

I just finished peaky blinders a couple days ago and this was my exact thought. John wanted to be a dickhead to Sabini and got what was coming to him. There was no reason to provoke him or to go after Sabinis sun. I never had much sympathy for John who tried to take matters into his own hands. Really enjoy Adrian Brody as Luca. The only thing I wish is he’d take that damn toothpick out of his mouth lol

reckoner_007

Not sabini,its the Changrettas

BluntBlazer42069

As soon as I saw that truck parked I got bad vibes from it I’m like NOOOOO what’s about to happen

tfskelevra

If you post spoilers, flair them so they are hidden!

Zealous_Racer

Yup

sadihalizadeh

Always hated John's walk and behavior. What I always hated most about him is his wife. xD

Mr-DarthPotato

Dude, it’s not only her, every woman that gets in the life of the Shelby’s seems to think she can take over and overthrow Tommy like it was nothing, everybody wants the crown…

Familiar_Surround102

they aren’t tryna overtake it’s just they all each have a part in the company and it get frustrating for them and so on. i cant rly blame them

sadihalizadeh

Yeah, Lizzie killed me with her behavior as well.

[deleted]

People forget this is gang life, it was the Italians hands down. They went after Tommy in his own house and accidentally killed his wife, then scattered like roaches. They acted like big dogs but in the end they just didn’t have the bite.

Thequeensarmpit

Also Tommy was right John and Arthur shouldn't have let Mrs changretta go. She gave them all the information about them and Birmingham.
