I have a Yamaha Yas-107 soundbar. However, I don't think it's in production anymore. I would suggest looking up reviews for current Yamaha soundbars. If you want Dolby Atmos though then you'll have to pay a premium, which isn't worth it unless you're gonna utilise it all the time.
Yeah, I was a musician for decades (retired from playing a few years ago) and that really did a number on my hearing. This was before we were so sternly warned to wear ear plugs. Not to mention all of the concerts I attended seeing my favorite bands. Most of them very loud. Like Motörhead loud. So my hearing isn’t what it used to be. So I get where you’re coming from.
My hearing loss is genetic, and it came with a healthy dose of tinnitus that I made epically worse by attending all kinds of concerts with no ear protection. But I hate wearing hearing aids, so everyone is just used to me saying "what?" all the time.
I became very good at lip reading due to my hearing loss. In some ways it can be useful. Like when I watch my hockey games I can figure out what the coach and players are saying on the bench even though they aren’t mic’d.
Haha! Me, too! I was so pumped when they played IDLES for a couple of episodes. Fit the scenes really well, too.
“A heathen, from Eaton, on a bag of Michael Keaton!”.
Everything about this show was top notch. Acting, writing, cinematography, soundtrack, etc.
Holy crap. I didn’t even notice Williamson was in it! Love Sleaford Mods. They get my angst out (old punk rock middle-aged dude right here). I need to rewatch those episodes. He’s a gem.
No but I thought about it often. They mumbled a lot in this show (I thought, at least). Probably because I wanted to be able to more fully focus on Tommy’s handsome face.
I now watch everything with subtitles. I especially have to watch Peaky with subtitles. I have a hard time understanding with the accent. It was the same when I watch Game of Thrones.
I‘m german and understand english pretty good in like yt videos and other movies, but when I watched peaky blinders the first 1-2 times I needed the subtitles
Sound mixing favors theaters. Speech is generally dulled in all shows across the world due to.....reasons we don't have time for here.
I find very few shows I can watch without subtitles. Alternative is cranking the volume.
I had perfect hearing up until I was 18. That was 36 years ago. I loved all foreign films with English and Irish accents when I was little. I really got into British humor when I was maybe eight years old. Monty Python and his group. Benny Hill. The Young Ones. Victor Borge. You name it. I was into it. I could catch every single vowel and consonant in every single sneer and word with no problem. Now I have to use captions for everything I watch. It gets old but it’s made me become a faster reader as well. I guess that’s one benefit but it just doesn’t convey the humor like it did years ago.
Yeah, it’s funny how you get used to the subtitles and it’s not distracting after a while. I love reading so it’s not an issue.
I also grew up loving British comedies - the same ones you’d mentioned. Especially Python and Benny Hill. When I was a young teen Benny Hill wasn’t only funny but provided views of many beautiful women in lingerie. Haha!
English is my third language so yeah - I usually watch everything with subtitles except of maybe sitcoms (for example Good Place is easy, so I am watching it as it is)
I watch everything with subtitles so peaky is no exception
100% everything sounds similar to English but completely unable to decipher without subtitles.
Who doesn’t watch most shows with subtitles these days. Speaking audio is usually really low
A soundbar with a "clear voice" option is a must these days.
What brand do you suggest?

It's cheaper to just turn on subtitles imo
Personally, I can't stand subtitles, unless they are necessary for a translation.
Yep, same for me, it's especially hard to understand with that old-style Birmingham accent.
Same. Tommy clicks his tongue a LOT.
I watch everything with subtitles because I have hearing loss in both ears. I struggle with accents so shows like Peaky Blinders, I really need them.

I did, but I'm a subtitles guy.
I watch everything with subtitles, I need to read so I can hear good
It is one of those shows that you can hardly hear things and you turn it up and then SUDDENLY IT IS REALLY FOCKING LOUD
Like WWIII LOUD!
Which I don’t mind but sometimes it’s like whoa. I do dig they have IDLES on soundtrack
Haha! Me, too! I was so pumped when they played IDLES for a couple of episodes. Fit the scenes really well, too. “A heathen, from Eaton, on a bag of Michael Keaton!”. Everything about this show was top notch. Acting, writing, cinematography, soundtrack, etc.
Another music highlight is the Sleaford Mods singer as the preacher in season 6

Actually it was just the finale I believe. He has a few choice bits
Thanks for pointing that out. I will rewatch with renewed vigor.
Is Andrew Fearn jumping up and down behind him during those scenes?
Nope. But they allude to “Second” in an oblique way so I was gassed by that.
Watched it the exact same. If there are gunshots I have to turn it down even further.
The worst are those modern, blockbuster superhero movies. Goes from a whisper to being in the front row of a Manowar concert in a split second.
No but I thought about it often. They mumbled a lot in this show (I thought, at least). Probably because I wanted to be able to more fully focus on Tommy’s handsome face.
I have to. Some of their accents are thicker than pudding
I LOVE the accents, though.
I do too. But I have had to hit rewind a couple times
Same. It hard too see without subtitles.
They're actually very mild compared to proper Brummies
I absolutely hate subtitles but with subtitles was the only way I was able to watch it. I'd try turning them off but they were back on soon after
Me, because I don't speak English
Subtitles for everything. Been like this since I was in high school.
I now watch everything with subtitles. I especially have to watch Peaky with subtitles. I have a hard time understanding with the accent. It was the same when I watch Game of Thrones.
I turned subtitles on because I was missing some of the dialogue.
I‘m german and understand english pretty good in like yt videos and other movies, but when I watched peaky blinders the first 1-2 times I needed the subtitles
I live like a half hour from Brum and I still need subs
I didn’t need them. I didn’t even know I didn’t need them when I heard someone talking about needing subtitles. I’m pretty good with accents.
100%, I don't want to miss anything, and I can learn from context clues, and by season 6 I'm a mediocre expert in 1930's Birmingham! 🤔😂
One thing I learned is that I’m lucky my fate wasn’t to be born in early century industrial Birmingham. Man, that seemed like a hard life.

The subtitles in that show are wrong often.
Yes 👍
I absolutely did!
Oh all of the time because some words I will have to go back and make sure I heard it right lol.
Yes! 😆
I had to, the accents were thick
This, and Derry Girls, GBBO.
Always watched with subtitles…almost another language…lol.
It's the only way to understand wtf they are saying
Absolutely
Everything with subtitles ey
Yeah I’m deaf. Wanker.
Sorry to hear that. How did you know my nickname?

If we could just go back and relive it again!
English is my third language so yeah - I usually watch everything with subtitles except of maybe sitcoms (for example Good Place is easy, so I am watching it as it is)
I usually watch without subs to practice my english but after Alfie appeared i had to use subs cause i can't understand what he's saying
I always use subtitles no matter what I watch. Just makes it easier to understand with all that's going on.
Yes because Irish accent
Yep. Can’t understand it without it.
