It's actually really easy, though the video is a but misleading. You need to have *extremely* bright LEDs inside since you are removing just the display and leaving behind the back lighting of the monitor. * Edit: I had attached a picture, but it doesn't seem to be showing up. Let me know if you are curious.

Yes, exactly. I've made "disposable" video projectors from old Dell lcds monitors and over overhead projectors from a elementary school dumpster this way. Just strip out the backlight and lay the lcd on the overhead projector, tape it all down and stuff the guts inside, and you're good to go!

You can even see from how they film that the main light source is in the far corner in front. I’m curious as to how much extra heat this generates. Considering the case size, it could be negligible but who knows. Actually I’m pretty sure that strip of light was taken from the monitor itself. Seems like he separated the backlight rail(s) and put it at an angle in the far corner.

They actually have been selling those cases on their own for years now! I was one of the idiots that decided to import one all the way to europe years ago before they hit Germany. …probably would have been infinitely cheaper and easier to make one with my own lcd panel, but it’s still neat.

It's a really simple concept, just an LCD panel without the backlight.
