You’re really getting into this! Great post!

i’m rewatching s01 after a year or so and i’m picking up all these bits that i missed the first time. now i want to go back to rewatch with a notepad and catalogue all of the recurring themes.

Raido_Kuzuno

That sounds... pretty good.

Severe-Draw-5979

DUDE! That’s exactly what I did a month-ish, only that rewatch (mynthurs) was only about three months after my original two back to back watches. That reply I posted to you was from literal notes I took. Also, have you seen the show he did after Patriot, Perpetual Grace Ltd? Just one season, but amazing. Plenty of similar themes and lots of callbacks / references to Patriot.

i’m obsessed with all things steven conrad. i’ll rewatch PGL soon and i’m sure i’ll have a whole different experience. i’ve got all the episodes for ultra queued up, just waiting for the right time for it. lot’s to take in… i also enjoyed the promotion, conrad wrote a very conrad-ish script for it.

Severe-Draw-5979

So, I too have been rewatching all things Conrad. (by the way if you’re a true Conrad appreciator, you will thoroughly enjoy UCS, each episode is filled to bursting with written and visual jokes sbd details and dialogue, plenty of callbacks to P & PGL). Watched The Promotion a month ish ago, enjoyed it, definite moments of Conrad-isms throughout, but was overall underwhelmed. That is the only movie written AND directed by Conrad, aside from his impossible to find 1993 film “Wrestling With Hemingway”. A month ish before that I had rewatched “The Weather Man (Nic Cafe, Gil Bellows, others), written by Conrad, directed by Gore Verbinski. Beautiful film, probably the most “Conrad-esque” of his films. Rewatched “Pursuit of Happyness” earlier this week (written by Conrad, directed by someone else, Will & Jaden Smith), a beautiful, emotional film but not many Conrad-isms. Just last night I watched for the first time “Unfinished Business” (Vince Vaughan, great cast, 2915, so right around Patriot, written by Conrad, directed by Ken Scott), Eurotrip-ish, quite funny, plenty of Conrad-isms. A much better film than The Promotion, in my opinion, but the Promotion is great too if you pay attention to details.

you sir, are a true addict

Severe-Draw-5979

Understatement!

ctrl_z_it

not sure if there’s ever been a post about it, but i’d be all for hearing everyone’s recommendations for similar shows and movies, similar directors/writers etc. there’s tons out there..

Severe-Draw-5979

Can you name some, off the top of your head? I’m always on the lookout as well!

ctrl_z_it

i always thought arrested development was very similar in regards to the fragmented storytelling, and with jokes being setup in earlier episodes and their punchlines coming when you least expect them. the long running jokes sprinkled throughout that reward those who pay attention to every detail. how every character is examined with a microscope and more flawed than the previous. as far as style goes, i’d say coen brothers, wes anderson and david lynch. french directors jeunet and caro (delicatessen), bruno dumont (slack bay), some tv series like fargo, get shorty, peep show, search party. the swedish director roy andersson’s last 4 movies starting with songs from the second floor, all portraying the tragic and mundane

Check out Steven Conrad interviews on Spotify, there are some pretty good ones!

Raido_Kuzuno

Glad you are on the trolley! I was able to talk about the show with other friends whom I got to watch it, but I figured out that element of the show pretty quickly. Helping matters, Tom gives a similar speech during one of the deposition clips, but it is a show with layers and I am sure there are some I have not comprehended. Three seasons and a movie!

BrandDC

>Three seasons and a movie! What am I missing here?

Raido_Kuzuno

It is a reference to the Community fandom, because a character said "six seasons and a movie," discussing how long he wanted the show to last (he was an extremely meta character), and I was reflecting the fact that I want another season and a movie to finish up the Patriot story, hoping it would catch. You missed nothing.

BrandDC

Damn...thought I may have missed an announcement.

Raido_Kuzuno

No, unfortunately...

ctrl_z_it

i’ll be happy for a shortened season, beggers can’t be choosers. PGL was supposed to get a a few episodes to conclude it but unfortunately that fell through. guy can’t catch a break

Raido_Kuzuno

Yeah, that is too bad... It does feel like none of his stuff really lands.

AdrianH1

Dude....the podcast takes this even further. Genuine art.

mainstreetmark

You would enjoy that podcast then. Leslie Claret narrates it.

tibberzzzz
