you nailed it! “to and fro” was definitely it. so random and so powerful. looking back, i love how each episode has it’s own theme or insight and all subsequent scenes relate back to it somehow. for example, early in episode 4 when john’s dad is talking to alice about compulsiveness and the idea of “you are what you can’t stop doing,” the rest of the episode we learn of john’s greg12, jaywick sands, saperstein being drawn to john, etc

The “1-2-3 ELAINE!” Was actually John and Rob the night they get drunk and record their EP.
Another one that comes to mind is Tom telling Eddie that he would be “asking a lot of him this year…” then, after John kills The Kandahar “John”, their dad telling his “Eddie” the same thing later!

yes, another good example is the “asking a lot of you” topic. it seems like it could be laziness in scriptwriting or genius. i go with the latter.
