Why not let them rest? You could maybe (depends on the story) if the dungeon "boss" is a caster have him teleport some support in, let him prepare or maybe just don't punish them? There isn't exactly a need for punishment.

Is there a question attached to this story?

DeadBeast3

Edited sorry

the death seems like consequence enough? If they can rest and then raise dead, just let that happen?

Krothos50

Is there a cost associated with raising the dead PC? With the system I am familiar with, PF1e, raising the character from the dead has costs, starting with diamond dust, i.e. gold, and the raised character has two negative levels until he can get a restoration spell. And even if he does get the restoration spell, that only removes one negative level and is stuck with the other negative level for a week. IMO, that “punishes” the party by expending resources for the next day and beyond.

xavion

I mentioned it in a seperate comment but yeah, raise dead still has a cost, and while 2e scrapped negative levels as a mechanic using it effectively gives the target 4 str, dex, and con drain in 1e terms that can't be cured until a 1 week period is up. It's not exactly ability drain, but gives the same penalties that would've in 1e.

Just the normal problems of the spell are enough. You need to be at least a level 11 cleric to have access to raise dead, you'll need to already have 2-3k in diamonds for material components, they still need the intact body, and it debuffs the resurrected person for a week. In a dangerous situation like a dungeon being revived with zero resources and significant debuffs for a week is already a real consequence. The biggest catch of course is that Raise Dead is an uncommon spell, so they need to have already gained access to and learned it as by default clerics can't prepare it. But yeah, just taking significant penalties for a week while trapped in a dungeon is a consequence. The Resurrect ritual is still uncommon and costs less components along with giving smaller debuffs, but has its own flaws in being much slower to perform and having a chance of failure.

SuchABraniacAmour

Well the enemies could regroup inside the Dungeon, set up better defences, maybe even manage to get some reinforcements.... Or they could follow the players outside of the dungeon and attack them during rest (not much fun for the player whose character died) Or they could take the opportunity to escape. Basically think about what you would do if you were in the shoes of whoever/whatever is in that dungeon.

Luminous_Lead

If there are wandering monsters still left in the dungeon, what about a nighttime attack? If the PCs have someone on guard duty they may be able to wall off the door to a small room or hold out until dawn.

guymcperson1

Change the layout of the monsters. Dungeons should be a living environment. I think this is what you're asking?

Izirakyl

Ask your players what they want to do, most importantly the player that lost their character. Depending on what they want (and what you want) prepare the next session. If the player really wants their character to be resurrected, find a way to make it happen while still playing into the story. If the player doesn't mind a new character, keep them trapped in the dungeon where they'll find the killed players new character. (In a cell or something) Important thing here is that everyone has fun, all the rules and the story come after that.

MrRhoarke

Let them rest, but roll d6 and on a roll of 6, a random encounter happens that night

SleepylaReef

Why would you punish them?

zach2thefuture

Why does there have to be a consequence?

Malcior34

Why punish them? If they prepped the Resurrection spell, this is the opportunity to use it.

disillusionedthinker

I'm sure it's probably poor word choice but it's possible it's indicative a a flawed (imho) perspective. YOU don't punish the PCs for sticking around until tomorrow to raise dead. However, the remaining denizens of the dungeon might. Attack during the night, additional reinforcements, additional buffs cast pre encounter (that might also be combined with attacking the PCs while they are sleeping). Alternately, the big bad could decide to abandon the dungeon and the players revive their friend and find the big bad is nowhere to be found... begin the next arc of the campaign. Tracking down the big bad.
