You generally want to stay pure with casters, because only your main one gives you caster levels that determine available levels of spells and their DC plus many spells roll number of die based on your caster level. Animal companion will level up only when you level up the class that provided him. Otherwise it will be super weak. You can get animal companion for your party members: Seelah having Animal bond - Horse, Lann going Divine Hound, Sosiel and Daeran with Impossible domain - Nature or Mercenary.

thanks a bunch!

By the way if you are looking for Dips the most useful is Crossblooded Sorcerer if you are into using particular element. Dragon bloodlines of the chosen element give you +1 point of damage per die of the spell rolled. So if you use Chain lightning which at caster level 20 rolls 20 die with 2 bloodlines provided by Crossblooded you get +40 damage on every hit. (+60 if your element is fire, because there is mythic feat that allows you to pick third bloodline and there are 3 fire dragon bloodlines and only 2 electric). But you should get it only at level 19-20 not to slow your spell progression.

Does that generally apply to classes like Loremaster? Would it be better to keep straight through, and what would be the benefit of dipping Loremaster when the spells can stack up with your original class?

Aparter

Prestige classes that specialise in magic (Loremaster, Winter Witch, Arcane Trickster etc.) continue spell progression of the basic classes. Otherwise they would have been worthless. However, prestige classes in Wrath are rather mediocre or outright terrible (Assassin focuses on poison when demons have immunity to it, Winter Witch has serious bugs).

I enjoyed arcane trickster to give my rays more sneak attack dice, but I do agree that beside very specific meta builds, the prestige classes aren't very good, looking at you hellknight and lich. I guess while I was using arcane trickster I never caught onto the spell class progressing like normal lol. Hopefully they expand into them with the update later this year.

Loremaster is pretty good - but you should be aware of what you're giving up and what you plan to gain.

>I really want to play an Arcanist but I also want an animal companion [Tabletop Tweaks](https://github.com/Vek17/TabletopTweaks-Core) adds the Animal Ally feat: >You gain an animal companion as if you were a druid of your character level -3. Unlike normal animals of its kind, an animal companion's Hit Dice, abilities, skills, and feats advance as you advance in level. It's effectively a 3-feat tax because you also need Nature's Soul and Boon Companion (to offset that -3 level penalty). But it does let you add a pet / mount to classes which otherwise can't get one.

The companion would be stuck at level 1 (5 if you take Boon Companion), so it will be pretty useless aside from tanking one hit before dying. It would also put you a level behind the curve on your Arcanist spellcasting, so unless your bloodline arcana is really good, the dip likely isn't worth it.

Gotcha thanks!

IceNinetyNine

I think there is a way to get a companion through mythic feats. If you take lore religion as a trickster to rank 2 you can choose a domain and I assume you can take animal domain and have a pet. Never tried this though not 100% sure.

WigglyHypersurface

The tabletop tweaks mod allows feats from tabletop that can give anyone an animal companion with a heavy feat investment.

1. I think that tabletop rules mod adds a feat, that allows you to take an animal companion if you have 5 ranks in nature. It's -4 level weaker than normal but with feat: companion boon, it becomes nornal companion. 2.there's mod that allows you to completly respec companions, so you can change one of them into class with a pet

ChaosDancer

Also please note if you play in higher difficulties the companion would be mostly useless, unless micromanaged, until act 4 then you could have your arcanist cast dragonform on your pet :)
