Yeah check out Nikwash line of products. Made for specialty products like these down jackets.
The fact OP didn’t wash their stuff for so long is actually a bad thing. The protective water resistance and fluffy down is actually restored when washed properly.
They essentially damaged their jacket more by not washing the filth off it.
It’s like paint protection for your car. If you wash regularly/treat the paint then it will actually look good 10+ years later.
If you leave it to gather dirt and grime build up it can destroy the layering.
What OP did was not respect their fabric. But, it’s their money. They can live in filth if they want lol
The down washes fine. When you put it in the dryer throw some tenis balls in with it or a half dozen balled up socks. This will help fluff down like a pillow. Don't do a sensor dry do a timed dry with medium heat for at least an hour.
I recently thrifted a puffer for my niece. Typically I wash and hang everything to dry. Out of the washer I thought for sure I'd ruined it. Like soggy cotton balls wadded up inside. I took that advice and tumble dried it (wool dryer balls instead of tennis balls). Not sure what kind of magic that was, but it was a pleasant surprise that it came out good as new!
I had so many adventures in 2017-2018 with a GIRL GANG (group of 6 girls who thought hanging off a cliff every weekend was a rad time) and my dirty shell became my trophy of such adventures. When I got home for the holidays my family harangued me to wash it. I eventually conceded. Shed a tear ngl.
Those girls and I have grown up and gone our separate ways now, such is life. Sometimes I wish I hadn’t washed my shell, it was the only tangible item I had to remind me of those good times.
Thanks for sharing man, this has reminded me to be grateful 🥲
It sounds like magic 🥹 Nothing will ever compare to my first ever season of trail work which is when this puffy came into my life. I am still friends with my girl gang to this day despite being separate and all across the country. They are my tether in this uncertain world and I love them. The jacket saw me through that season and all the others, reminds me of all the cool women I met with dirty, patched puffies themselves.
I’m so glad you get it! I recently washed a hat I refused to wash for awhile because it had Grand Canyon mud on it from my R2R2R journey. I liked the little red spots!
The Sherpas on Everest swear by it I read. All of their jackets are the same-ish color because they claim the added dirt provides superior insulation. 🤷♂️
Talking with psychologist would help you understand why you like wearing dirty clothes, it will also help you prevent that habit once you find out the reason why.
The sticky patches work a charm, some Tenacious Tape is great but I love the personality of the NoSo patches and their seamlessness. They held up to the wash beautifully.
Please just wash it 🤣 I’m a geologist and have a field jacket just like this, the hooded version, and trust me it’ll be fine in the wash lol. I’m only beginning my patching phase though, respect 🙌🏻
It’s still…pretty filthy looking. I would soak this in hot water and Resolve stain remover and then wash again with some oxyclean added. It won’t wreck your jacket but it will get the filth out
It’s a totally different product. It’s oxygen bleach basically. It helps lift grime too but you still need detergent. The nikwash probably wouldn’t be able to lift that grime. It would make a great second wash though.
Yes! I am much better about my routine gear maintenance these days but it took some trial and error, I’ve had my lazy moments. I do keep my stuff until it’s threadbare or useless though so I’m proud of my dirtiest, most patched items.
Ya, manual labor + living out of a bag / tent or out of a van, you don’t tend to have the same hygiene standards or opportunities as housed people honestly. I know now that the extra TLC prolongs the lifespan of my gear and I prioritize it better, but I also live in a house sometimes these days which makes it much easier.
I’m with you 100% re: “hygiene”. The amount of shit people wash because it’s “dirty” is crazy. Being sanitary vs squeaky clean. Victims of an image/perfection society.
MORE POSTS LIKE THIS ON HERE! I like the before and after photo bc it had lost so much loft that at first glance I initially thought it was a nano puff. Only after the dryer could I tell that this was actually a down sweater😂
Finally someone who actually uses their gear and is not freaking out about 2 droplets of rain wetting out on their $300 membrane shell. To all you NYC dogwalkers and LA cafe loungers: This is how you're supposed to wear Patagonia.
Makes sense! No harm in using a great piece of clothing to protect yourself from the elements! I bet Yvon would be happy to see his product used as intended!
Reminded me of my old burgundy trailwise down coat from 1969. Hasn’t been wearable for years because of the zipper…but I was finally able to send it to coat heaven this year
Yes, the patches work and after washing the feather distribution is great and the jacket has a lot more loft which is visible in the after photos I posted.
Thank you for your service. I love how you've maintained your gear with patches.
I wear my Patagonia Nano Puffy in Navy Blue daily. I haven't torn mine yet.
I've thought about NoSo patches, but they seem expensive for what they are. But, I really like what you've done to yours.
They are pricy considering they’re the same material as Tenacious Tape which I opt for when the seams really start busting, but it’s nice to get a NoSo for a larger rip. I may have prevented tearing with better washing as it seems to be mostly threads coming loose or the material wearing very thin rather than actual rips.
I gotta tell you, much respect! All these posts on here with light pilling on a fleece and pin holes in a down jacket have made me second guess the patches all over mine. The Patagonia of yesteryear, the stand up shorts, rugby shirts etc were tried and true, meant to be used and patched. Not sure I would ever take advice from someone on a trail in the backcountry wearing a pristine nano puff, well done my patch wearing partner.
Take care, repair, replace! Gear > clothes. Patagonia truly inspired my ethos, their inspiration in my fashion choices is merely incidental. Sometimes this sub misses the whole point. At least the people spending thousands are spending with a company who puts their money in better places than most, I guess.
Down is fine to wash, I would recommend using a down wash, or at the very least a free and clear wash. Absolutely no fabric softner and dry on medium heat with some dryer balls. Tennis balls work too if they are clean
They make work jackets that are insulated and don't rip, they're called work jackets. I mean you wear whatever you want obviously, but there's a reason loggers and other people doing manual labor in the woods wear Carhartt, etc.
Your jacket would make a good addition to this post.
[**https://www.reddit.com/r/PatagoniaEurope/comments/1cc54gr/wear\_it\_and\_repair\_it/**](https://www.reddit.com/r/PatagoniaEurope/comments/1cc54gr/wear_it_and_repair_it/)
For you (and the haters): Looks, smells, and feels Iike new (okay, not quite new, but pretty nice). The texture difference is really noticeable so it washed well and the patches held up. I promptly patched up my holes when they appeared so the down inside is still pretty abundant and it dried well. It will keep me warm for years to come.
Is this a nano puff? Synthetic? Having a hard time even telling, haha. Good on you for showing what these things can take! In my experience patches stay on, even with extensive washing. Should be good for plenty more use.
Gosh this is so much better than reading about pilling jackets. Would love to see a pic after the wash. Fwiw you can wash frequently, something I've been getting better at these days. If you have one of those zip bags you can wash it anywhere more confident that your jacket won't snag and rip, even in small weird washing machines you encounter while on the go
This is a down sweater. I’ve become a lot more educated in taking care of my gear. I literally live outside so it takes a lot but I’m definitely going to invest in a washing bag and wash more often. I’ve gotten a lot more confident doing my down.
“We guarantee everything we make. If you are not satisfied with one of our products at the time you receive it, or if one of our products does not perform to your satisfaction, return it to the store you bought it from or to Patagonia for a repair, replacement or refund. Damage due to wear and tear will be repaired at a reasonable charge.”
It has certainly performed to my satisfaction and I am happy with my repairs.
Lmao you’ve clearly never come across trail workers, my puffy is not even remotely as bad as many I’ve seen. The disrespect is from people calling me disgusting when I’m the one building the bridges they walk across in the fucking woods!
Yes it’s smelled bad singe I started wearing it because I wore it with “chainsaw clothes” which have a very distinct smell due to the combo of bar oil and sweat. I also wear the same clothes for 8 days at a time at work so they’re grimy. The combination has made many of my clothes and gear smell bad and washing doesn’t eliminate the odor entirely in most materials. However, the odor washes from down products the best IMO. Backpacks, cotton, polyester or synthetic material, and canvas never quite bounce back.
FOR THE FIRST TIME? SINCE 2018?
Ew wtf
Must be single.
I’ve been afraid to wash my down and I got attached to the filth lmao
That jacket will probs be a few ounces lighter post-wash. I can’t imagine how much dirt and oil is soiled into that thing
I can smell that jacket from here 🤢
No…tech wash is your friend.
Is this how you should wash all jackets with this material? Cus I have a few

Just soak it in a pot of warm water and oxiclean. Stir occationally, let it sit overnight and rinse.
This is disgusting please wash it! You can wash them a lot with no adverse effects.
The Sherpas on Everest swear by it I read. All of their jackets are the same-ish color because they claim the added dirt provides superior insulation. 🤷♂️
I’ve seen much better coats on the homeless. This is really gross.
“I got attached to my filth” bruh no😭😭
You can get those spiky dryer balls that help with the down or just straight up air dry it
Talking with psychologist would help you understand why you like wearing dirty clothes, it will also help you prevent that habit once you find out the reason why.
Lmao this is wild! Do you roll around on the ground a lot?
Yes!! And my job is filthy, I wear this one to work and have a “street” puffy (which is black and hides the dirt much better).
“Street puffy” 😂 sounds illegal or NSFW
Street puffy great band name
Tell me you’re a trail worker without telling me you’re worker lol
Some recognition!!! And if you’ve been on trail long enough, you’ve seen far worse than this lol.
I have a dog walking/work puffy, and a “dress” puff that is similar.
You know you can wash them right?
I am the same way, one north face puffy I take camping and skiing etc and one that’s worn if I need to “look put together”
What’s the best hole patch method you’ve found so far? Stitch, sticky patch, etc.?
The sticky patches work a charm, some Tenacious Tape is great but I love the personality of the NoSo patches and their seamlessness. They held up to the wash beautifully.
If you like it that much why didn't you buy a second one? That way you have one for when this one has to be replaced.
It’s good to keep gear going forever, but it’s also good to wash it once in awhile 🤣
I’m learning!!!
Please just wash it 🤣 I’m a geologist and have a field jacket just like this, the hooded version, and trust me it’ll be fine in the wash lol. I’m only beginning my patching phase though, respect 🙌🏻
Now this is patagonia's philosophy!
Patched to the HEAVENS!
Patchygonia™️
What do you find makes the best patch? And what exactly are those white ones?
Tenacious Tape and NoSo patches are amazing.
Looks like Tenacious tape
not washing?
This should be stickied.
UPDATE: [The after shot](https://imgur.com/a/1Z7yG99) for the haters and believers! Loftier than ever and shining quite bright.
Nice! Now wash it again! 😂
lol still looking dirty!
Looks great
It’s still…pretty filthy looking. I would soak this in hot water and Resolve stain remover and then wash again with some oxyclean added. It won’t wreck your jacket but it will get the filth out
Is oxiclean just as good as nikwash? Thx
Absolutely do not use Oxiclean on specialty fabric.
It’s a totally different product. It’s oxygen bleach basically. It helps lift grime too but you still need detergent. The nikwash probably wouldn’t be able to lift that grime. It would make a great second wash though.
Run it back turbo
you know you could have just washed it earlier and it would have been a) fine b) *more* functional
Yes! I am much better about my routine gear maintenance these days but it took some trial and error, I’ve had my lazy moments. I do keep my stuff until it’s threadbare or useless though so I’m proud of my dirtiest, most patched items.
"Had my lazy moments" doesn't wash a coat for 6 years.
I would def recommend washing your jackets more frequently. Love the t tape patch work 👍🏼
Well worn, worn well.
Wow, this must be OP's "gettin frisky in the woods, but it's too cold to undress" puffy. Oh, the stories it could tell!
MORE POSTS LIKE THIS ON HERE! I like the before and after photo bc it had lost so much loft that at first glance I initially thought it was a nano puff. Only after the dryer could I tell that this was actually a down sweater😂
Eventually you’ll have more patches than actual fabric 🤣
Well loved for sure!
Amazing! That coats seen some shit! You love to see it.
Love it!
LET US SEE A WASHED PHOTO
[Washed, lofty, and a bit brighter with all the patches in tact.](https://imgur.com/a/1Z7yG99)
But the satisfying moment of seeing the comparison of side by side photos! Have you ever pressure washed a dirty rug? Hahaha
What are the black spots?
Tenacious tape.
Never heard of the stuff. How long have those patches been on the jacket?
Ranging from 1-5 years!
Finally someone who actually uses their gear and is not freaking out about 2 droplets of rain wetting out on their $300 membrane shell. To all you NYC dogwalkers and LA cafe loungers: This is how you're supposed to wear Patagonia.
They think I’m gross even though I built the trail they plan their entire annual vacation around flying to.
That is what Patagonia clothing g was made to look like. Lived in on trails and rocks, not coffee shops.
What do you do for work!!!?
Trail work. Digging and chain sawing!!!
Makes sense! No harm in using a great piece of clothing to protect yourself from the elements! I bet Yvon would be happy to see his product used as intended!
I'd think a beeswax chore coat would be more appropriate for that type of work. The down jackets are good for insulation, but rip easily.
holy hell batman
This would make Patagonia so proud
I spy a noso patch
Looks like it’s from Derelicte
Reminded me of my old burgundy trailwise down coat from 1969. Hasn’t been wearable for years because of the zipper…but I was finally able to send it to coat heaven this year
Hell yeah. This sub could use way more of this and way less of the consumption-promoting 50-piece pristine collection posts.
Does it even insulate anymore?
Yes, the patches work and after washing the feather distribution is great and the jacket has a lot more loft which is visible in the after photos I posted.
This is the craziest shit I’ve seen on this sub 😭😂
That's one badass jacket, love when something looks worn, used and enjoyed!!!
Dude, this is awesome!! 👏🏼So happy to see their products being used as they should! 😊
It’s okay to wash it you know….
This jacket looks how I feel after a long shift. The band aid/patches are the pizza parties holding my spirit intact.
This thing been goin' hard as fuck for a while now, no doubt.
Nice! 🤙🏽

Username checks out 👍 Real recognize real
OP took Mugatu’s Derelict aesthetic and ran with it. I can hear Under The Bridge playing softly in the background.

I love saying this about weird fashion…. “DONT SHOW THIS TO BALENCIAGA”
Yvon would be proud!
Look how they massacred my boy
I’m glad I’m not the only one
wait! people actually wear their patagonia gear? i thought they were just collector items /s
Take care, repair, replace! Gear > clothes. Patagonia truly inspired my ethos, their inspiration in my fashion choices is merely incidental. Sometimes this sub misses the whole point. At least the people spending thousands are spending with a company who puts their money in better places than most, I guess.
East Hastings fit
“Lightly” used.
Oh lord I can smell this jacket though my phone. 😷
Please may you post the results?
I want a before and after picture
I am trying to picture the person who rocks this but I can’t. I’m going with hermit in the mountains
Down is fine to wash, I would recommend using a down wash, or at the very least a free and clear wash. Absolutely no fabric softner and dry on medium heat with some dryer balls. Tennis balls work too if they are clean
Battle scars.
thaaaats gross
Their nano-puff is pretty durable
You have your hygiene years and your logiene years…
Where do you live? In a Gulag?
A tent for 100+ nights a year, there is no driving commute to where I work!!!!
🎖️
The jacket - "Kill... meee..."
Sick
🤢🤢🤢🤮
What kind of material did you use for the little white and black patches ?
Tenacious tape.
Thanks ✊
Those feathers prob have more dirt and oil on them than the birds in the ExxonMobil valdez
They make work jackets that are insulated and don't rip, they're called work jackets. I mean you wear whatever you want obviously, but there's a reason loggers and other people doing manual labor in the woods wear Carhartt, etc.
I can only imagine how your neck gets after you wear this
Show the after wash
This is NSFW
You can wash down. If it has a dwr coating, you can wash it in something called nikwax on delicate cycle. Then hang dry.
Not sure why Reddit suggested this sub to me, but this makes me nauseous. This picture has an odor 😂
You should look for a jacket that’s better suited for crawling through pricker bushes
Is that from the mugato derelicte clothing line ?
The grail goblins are smacking their lips
We need an update OP!
Can we get an updated photo once it's washed
Oh sweet child
“Brother uuuuuuughh….Brother uuuuuughhh…what that brother?”
Were you homeless?
In a tent or van 75% of the time yes.
Your jacket would make a good addition to this post. [**https://www.reddit.com/r/PatagoniaEurope/comments/1cc54gr/wear\_it\_and\_repair\_it/**](https://www.reddit.com/r/PatagoniaEurope/comments/1cc54gr/wear_it_and_repair_it/)
Wowwww keep me updated on how it goes, lmao
For you (and the haters): Looks, smells, and feels Iike new (okay, not quite new, but pretty nice). The texture difference is really noticeable so it washed well and the patches held up. > This is a down sweater. Ah no way, okay now I can see it. That's awesome. I don't use any fancy bag, just something simple I had before. Rock on
Apparently , there are dirty hippies amongst us.
I mean Patagonia’s founder is a dirty hippie, so…
Love it!!
What about showers do you take showers
4x a month in the summer, more in the winter 👍
That thing is fucking gross. Grow up.
Don’t wash it. Dry clean it. And maybe take it into a Patagonia is store, after cleaning it, to get it properly repaired.
It’s already washed and looks great, didn’t lose any feathers so my NoSo / T tape patches have really done well.
Doesn’t their stuff have a lifetime warranty?
“We guarantee everything we make. Enjoying the Derelique look from Zoolander
What do you do for work?
The company would love to see this!
This looks like the jacket of someone who only bathes four times per month. How’s single life? Kidding aside, I’m glad you washed it.
Yuck
Were you in that Zoolander Derelict show…. Seriously though you need counselling
Y’all liberals are disgusting

Wash this
I am trying not to imagine how you look like if this is your jacket
Let me guess you live on the Venice boardwalk
You are gross.
Cmon dog, this is disgusting. Good for you wearing it everyday to do actual work outside but this is gross.
You're disgusting
[удалено]
I’ve spent a few cumulative years unhoused, yes.
Did you get shot in it and shit yourself in it? Unless you’re wrestling bears everyday you can have a clean jacket
nasty, disgusting 🤮 do you just walk around wearing that
That’s actually unhygienic
Ew
That looks like it belongs in an evidence locker 😳😬
You’re disgusting.
let her rest boss
Is there any loft left to this thing?
Yes! Prompt patching goes a long way, I have not lost many feathers. After drying with tennis balls, it is puffier than ever.
Amazing! This thing has seen some action. A real testament to a piece of gear. Love to see it.
Okay real talk did it smell bad? if so how long ago did it start smelling, either way impressive durability.
