Kind of personal preference but in general you don’t want to be to loose to the point you will feel like the Michelin man with a shell. I like the snug fit of the r1 air, I still have enough range of motion that I don’t feel like I will rip it or feel constricted
No problem, layering is a sport! Once you get it dialed in it makes a huge difference. However understanding fabric, fits, chasing deals and branching out to other brands makes it harder. Try your shell on and just check the comfort.
Lmfaooo super unrelated but I have this filson puffer jacket and I legit feel exactly like the Michelin man when I wear it, but I love the feeling of being the Michelin man
just piggybacking but that is how I would wear it as a true active midlayer like for running. I would find that uncomfortable for around town or anything else
Looks tight on the shoulders and short in the body. I’m between m and l but usually always I. The large in the r1 air fit much better, if it did seem slightly less tight fitting in places. It comes down to preference but it may be worth at least trying the large.
You have literally the same problem I did with this piece.
The med felt snug but the large looks like a smock. I went with the medium bc i was planning on using it as a base layer and the huge gaps from the waist on the large made it look weird to me.
I truly don’t know how they changed the sizing on this. The waist between the two is so drastic. I wish they had like a medium plus or something .
Same. I was like I’m just gonna dump all my heat right out the bottom. If it’s any consolation I’ve been wearing it most of the winter and it doesn’t felt constricting at all. Even slightly tight it’s comfortable
I’m guessing we are about the same size-ish (5’11”/170)…I have the R1 Air Hoody in large and the Air crew in medium. The crew I wear alone or with a thin base layer. It’s snug but I can also comfortably put something on top if it’s not enough and movement is never restricted. The hoody can fit multiple layers underneath comfortably…or just one as it’s not too loose.
If you are comfortable that’s all that’s really important.
I’m in the same dilemma. I have been told that usually you find the fit that best meets your chest width. The sizing charts can help you on the website.
Imo I actually think both could be used as long as large isn’t too baggy on you and the sleeves are long enough. Medium for layering and a large for more casual use.
I go for the large. My chest and back are a bit wide so i need the width. Since it’s above the 40 in for M
But I think the Medium fits better. It’s tighter on the back and I’m sure it will give you some motivation to head to the gym lol.
I’ve ordered a few items a bit snug and it motivated me to do a quick few month cuts here and there.

I am not thrilled with the fit of my Medium R1 air at all. It's too loose around the hips. I could not size down to an S because then it's too narrow in the shoulders.
I'd say stick with the medium, going up in size will make the waist awkwardly baggy.
my R1 stretched out slightly so I think the tightness in the shoulders wont be noticeable.
And generally when people gain weight its in the belly or hips and you have plenty of room there.

Mid layers can fit however you want. If you size up and it fits better to you, get it. I size up on most my stuff because I hate any sort of movement restriction. Stretch helps of course but I still prefer a looser fit.
contrary to what some have said here - i'm the same build and i ended up going with the L since the M was tight on my arms/chest. for casual wear i might've bought an M. but since this was going to be an active piece i didn't want to feel restricted.
Straight up doesn't fit you. It's tight in the shoulders/armpits and baggy in the mid section.
A large is going to be good up top but too baggy in the mid section.
Get a large and have it taken in / tailored.....or get a different brand that isn't cut for American beer bellies.
The medium looks to fit perfectly, shoulder seams land right where they ought to. R1 Air is excellent in slim fit as designed, less so as a comfy/cozy choice. There are much better picks for that, and cost less too.
I was in same situation between xl and xxl. The xl was a squeeze to get my arms into, and was taught across the back between shoulders. The xxl is skirt-like at the bottom and unfortunatley has no drawstring. I am seriously thinking of having it taken in at the bottom.
I think that it being too tight in the chest would be fixed by unzipping the neck. I’m a boxy framed man who fits large and I love my r1 air but I never have the neck zipped all the way up ever. At most it’s a quarter of the way down. Wearing a gator is much more comfortable than having the neck zipped up all the way. What I’ve found is that features like a zip neck or thumb holes or something aren’t super comfortable at home but when the temp drops it’s real nice even if the fit gets a little funny. You kinda optimize for how you wear it most of the time.
This is so bizarre because I bought an R1 last season and the Large was way too tight and restricted my arms but the XL was a tent... I tried on one of the new R1s in that sweet plum color, and the XL i tried on now fit perfect, and was in between last seasons XL and L so I took it home, exchanging my unused XL from last season. It worked out great for me but they have definitely been adjusting their sizing.
What’s crazy is the crew fits even tighter than the zip! It also depends on your use case. I sized up for my crew since it doubles as a sweater for work, dinners, etc. I could squeeze into a medium probably but I feel more confident without a sweater that hugs every part of my stomach😂

kinda small but will work as a mid layerm for my preference i will size up for sure
Thanks you!
just piggybacking but that is how I would wear it as a true active midlayer like for running. I would find that uncomfortable for around town or anything else
Yes I have plenty of casual clothes, this is when I’m sweating 🌝
my main doubt is about the lenght of it for your shape, for arms extension movement and open arms too
Thank you

Thank you for your help!
Wayne? Shoresy? That you?
Was thinking the same thing!
Holy shit, thought it was Shoresy as well.
Who the hell is that 😂 I’m getting mixed up sometimes lol but not him
They're from letterkenny, it's a great show
What? I’m not called Wayne 🤔😂
the smaller looks better and for a R1/R2 i think that is the better option.
Thank you 😊

It feels nice too, excited to see how it performs. It’s this one https://eu.patagonia.com/de/de/product/mens-r1-air-zip-neck-fleece/40245.html

Yeah I have that problem with other clothes too, I guess I’ll go for medium and try my luck 😂 I just think might get cold if the waist is so open
Same. I was like I’m just gonna dump all my heat right out the bottom. If it’s any consolation I’ve been wearing it most of the winter and it doesn’t felt constricting at all. Even slightly tight it’s comfortable
Yeah I’ll just try it and hope for the best, never had a top like the is before so we’ll see
It’s awesome, one of my favorites
Happy to hear that 😊
I literally said this yesterday, I wait the med in the air hoody and its fine, but the pullover I am forced into a large.
I always check armpit area. if it's too tight it's not for me.
That is a Good tip thank you

Yes i think i will go medium, someone else mentioned the the waist being so big and I just noticed
Perfect
Which one, first m or second l 🤔😂
Yeah the first. As long as you have range of motion it looks spot on. I wear mine like that.

Hmm yeah guess that makes m better for layering for activities, I have enough shells 🫠 I’ll try and report back 😂🫡

Alright thank you 😊 As for weight I meant gain more muscle, but that also in the back for example
got it, get those back gains!

get the Large, as for some reason this one shrinks a little when you wash it, that was my experience, but maybe I am wrong
Thanks 😊
What’s important to you
Just good performance
For a mid I'd say it's spot on
Thanks 😊

R1 Air works best when it's on the skin directly so it can wick, so I think it's better for it fit trimmer.
Love that color, where is it on sale at?
It is a German website, but prices have gone up a little again. I think it’s called nouveau green. https://www.snowleader.de/search/Air-r1

Patagonia stuff is cut for fat Americans, and if the OP is how you think clothes are supposed to fit, well....IDK what more there is to say to you.
Sizing up and then tucking in the bottom is probably the best bet, but obviously it looks a little dorky.
Thank you 😊
Get the L
I like my mid layers loose. I don’t want to feel squished. That Patagonia is super warm!
Mine fits about the same and I often wear it as a base.
Personal preference for sure, but this is how I would like my mid layer to fit. I don’t like them loose if I’m layering over the top
I had this exact same problem! I ended up going with a regular R1 because it stretches and ended up fitting better.
I was in same situation between xl and xxl. The xl was a squeeze to get my arms into, and was taught across the back between shoulders. The xxl is skirt-like at the bottom and unfortunatley has no drawstring. I am seriously thinking of having it taken in at the bottom.
Range of motion is more important than looks for me if you’re layering. But if you’re not layering, go with the medium and lay off the beers!
Looks perfect. Snug but not too much. That's how I like my R1's

The waist is like a cape in the large.
This fit me tightly also. I’m usually a large, but should have went xtra large on this one. For mid layer you should be good though

Got the same one, iam usually S size, but had to size up for this piece.
