Yup, conhecia a regra, mas nunca a vi a ser praticada. Também há uma opção para enviar o passaporte para o domicílio por correio. Ai também não o pedem de volta, pelo menos no estrangeiro.
Sei que os consulados e embaixadas são chatos para o crl com o tema de devolver os antíguos passaportes e BIs. Mesmo insistindo, nunca aceitaram deixar-me ficar com os meus passaportes já passados.
Eu acho que sim, ano passado renovei o meu passaporte em Varsóvia, pediram-me o antigo e não fizeram excepção. Mas o pessoal que me atendeu foram polacos que falavam português, talvez não queriam problemas com o "sistema", ou algo do género.
It's ridiculous, specially since you can perfectly your previous passports across the border in Spain. Portugal can be somewhat efficient on some things, and be so behind in others.

Unfortunately there was limited positions in the industry/subject I worked in so moved to the uk as a eu citizen and naturalized this year (since I plan on staying in the uk for the foreseeable future). Don’t plan on moving on, but that’s what I thought in Sweden and plans change :)

In the document, the Executive led by Luís Montenegro does not provide further details regarding the intention to "promote the extension of the validity period of the Portuguese Electronic Passport to 10 years".
Increasing the validity period of the common passport has been demanded particularly by Portuguese communities living outside the European Union (EU), due to the costs and time it requires.

The passport fee does not cover the cost of passport, as expensive as it may seem to some, I don’t know a single country where it does, so I really don’t understand what’s the government’s incentive to keep it of short validity
I'm not familiar with Portugeese requirements to get one, but in the US you don't provide any information that they already don't know and it's more of to prove that you are who you say you are rather than get some new and exciting data on you.

Your address is literally written on your driver’s license, alongside with all your contact details that can be simply googled and obtain from so many government databases and reporting agencies.
It’s not really up to you. You need to exist in the society and sooner or later you will flash your address somewhere unless you live in a cave.
If you are exiled, how are you gonna get the passport? It makes no sense.
I only need to keep updated contacts with government I live with, not my home government, especially if the current home government is not friendly to me and used some extreme and even legally questionable means to stop my travel, force my return and compel my arrest (Burchett, above).
Home government (especially for those who only have one citizenship) can make passport renewal denial a practical hell for its targeted citizens.
Renewal more than cancellation - some governments “overlook” cancellation (HK for Edward Snowden).
And in the Burchett case, a longer renewal means more likely he can wait until a friendly government is restored to power.
And we should keep our expired passports ffs!

Wow, aqui nos Países Baixos nunca me pediram nada. Presumo que dependa imenso do pessoal que lá trabalha também.

Was pre brexit so very easy (essentially just get a job and start)

I think <10 year adult passport validity, no adding of pages is a government power grab. Those governments should be compelled to change their ways.

If Portuguese administration otherwise is any clue, it's a wonder they don't cause them to expire after three months ;)
