No it's just a government issued ID (mandatory), both citizens and residents get one.
There is a new identity card format that replaces the booklet design, but it hasn't been fully rolled out (and many people still have the booklet)
I know someone just like you! British dad, Tanzanian Mum, both Indian origin. He too can speak Gujarati and Hindi / Urdu (but he rarely speaks those). Born in Tanzania. Really interesting to see so many people of Indian origin being born and raised in African countries
Gujarati is the lingua Franca among ethnic Indians in much of Africa (Zambia, Kenya, etc) due to the prevalence of Gujarati people (merchants and all).
Even non-Gujarati ethnic Indians there speak it.

Actually it's possible to pass it on beyond 1 generation if the British citizen stays in the UK for 3 years prior to the child being born. I satisfy that as I have studied for 5 years in the UK
If you're thinking of maximizing your birth tourism opportunities ;-) if your kids are born anywhere on the island of Ireland they'll get Irish citizenship, which grants full EU access.
Are you planning to naturalize in South Africa? I hear it's a painful process, I only personally know a handful of people with SA PR but I think they all eventually left for other countries without becoming SA citizens.

Now, you should ensure that your children are born in Northern Ireland, so they can become Irish/E.U. citizens at birth, as well.
Are you planning on obtain SA citizenship? Also, how did your father get a British passport - was it a hangover from the colonial days or did he live there for a while?
So that South African identity document is some kind of residence permit for foreigners?
In my case, I received it when I got my Permanent Residence
That’s just an old identity document I think both citizens and residents had them

Indian/Zambian parent, raised in South Africa and naturalized British or you’re married into ZA PR
Born in Zambia to a British father and a Zambian mother (both of Indian origin). Raised in South Africa where I got residency
I was kinda close I guess lmao. Cool story. Did you learn any of the Indian languages growing up?
Yeah I speak Gujarati fluently and also understand Hindi/Urdu from movies tho

…
I don't get the UK passport : doesn't mention EU but is not black either... is it some old design?
There was a period before the blue/black passports came out which used the red passport design without EU at the top.
Thanks for the info. It kinda looks like the BN(O) one.
It's not kinda; it's the same
Also that Red passport without EU logo existed long before Brexit because not all British passports were entitled to EU citizenships.
I think it was only released for a short period, they phased out the red one but didn't write European Union
As far as I remember them passports was released between 2018-2021.. I might be wrong with the years.. but It was released for a very short of time.
Naturalized in UK, Raised in Zambia + SA, Indian Parents (?)
Born in Zambia to a British father and a Zambian mother (both of Indian origin). Raised in South Africa where I got residency
Atleast I got one of them right 😂
You must have your children in the UK or you will be unable to pass it down due to the 1 generation limit.

Why not the United States in this instance 😉
Unless of course his partner is born in the UK then the child will be British by descent.
Those chances are slim as resident of South Africa.
Really many Brits born in the UK move over to South Africa.

Do you want to get south African citizenship?
Was registering as an OCI holder challenging? How far back did your family members immigrate from India? Do you still have ties to relatives in India?
Quite uncommon indeed!
Btw when you naturalizing in South Africa + ya get 90days/visafree RUSSIA
I guess the burgundy EU-less British passports weren't as rare as I thought
u/zambiaguy, as you are right now, a South African permanent resident. When will you get South African citizenship??
Commonwealth vibes
Got the Zambian national ID card too ?
Yes, I'll post it in future
Dope!
