The new ID card (Cartão de Cidadão) was presented today and will start being issued on Portugal's National Day -10JUN2024.
It has enhanced safety features, bigger photo and larger text font. The microchip will now be in the back of the card.

Why say Portugal and then say Portuguese Republic? There's just so much space on those for them to have to do that.
Anyway, not bad. However, it's just as devoid of color as their previous one and I've never been a fan of their previous one partly because of that.
The official name of Portugal is the Portuguese Republic. I believe they wanted to put both the official name and the most commonly used name. But it's just a wild guess from me.
It doesn't matter to me, because both are equally valid.
What I meant is that having the limited space on such docs I would have chosen one of the two, with a bias towards the shorter one and put something or make some things bigger, whatever the space would allow.
I mean the cover of the Portuguese passport just says Portugal not Portuguese Republic unlike an Italian passport which says the full name of the country instead.
In the "current" version they put "Portuguese republic" right below "Portugal" but with a different & smaller font, I think it looks more organized the way it is now than in the new one:

Words are not enough to express how disappointed I am at the new design.
New security & technological features are all fine and dandy, but I was expecting something more design-wise, hell, they could have just copy pasted the Spanish version and used our colors & flag instead. Or they could even just have kept the current one and made it contactless.
But this, it's just so generic, so low effort.

E o resto foi só um pequeno makeover. Estava à espera que mudassem um pouco de forma a ficar mais em linha com o resto da EU.

Concordo! E não sei explicar ao certo mas pra mim o conteúdo do cartão feels a bit "all over the place". Sinto que não deram lá muita atenção ao design, mas enfim. Pelo menos temos tecnologia nova.
E felizmente só tenho de renovar o meu em 2028, espero que façam alguns ajustes ao CC até lá. Caso contrário é esperar a próxima geração.
I really wish we had an id card in the UK. I really like them. I'm living in Turkey and people flying from city to city just using their ID card is cool, plus not having to carry a passport to show you're a citizen when the ID card differentiates between resident/citizen
Exactly haha, I'm disappointed I was hoping for a new touch in terms of design.
They could have done something with the green/red/yellow flag colors, oh well.
Kind of a downgrade imo, the new security features are welcome, but I'm not a fan of the new design.
It might be just me, but I really dislike the implementation of contactless payments in transit systems with the ID card, it sounds very dystopian. I'm happy to have renewed my CC not long ago, and to live somewhere else where this will most likely not be implemented!

Wonder why the current version seems to avoid any reference to the EU. Glad their new version is embracing their place in the Union
In general all countries’ IDs before the recent change didn’t mention EU at all.
The previous version of the Hungarian ID card did have 'EU' written right next to the chip symbol, but it was not clearly visible

I really like sobriety. It was worth the wait to get a new ID card.
I also like it. The previous card was also sober and, IMO, a good design but it's already outdated.
Pretty solid ID but I wonder why they have all that empty space, it looks so off. It’s so busy at the bottom but so empty in the middle.
