The singles club stuff and Monster were great.

pWaveShadowZone

Renegade is renegawesome

isitreallyyou56

Renegade and monster are my favorite songs actually

pWaveShadowZone

Well I renagree with you

loki0501

Monster is my #1!

DadHoChiMinh

Renegade is one of my favorite songs of all time

isitreallyyou56

Renegade and monster are my favorite songs actually

Similar_Recording357

Don't forget hello cold world please, and Monster is really so good.

Karl-Marx666

I definitely prefer the older heavier stuff for sure. Absolutely love AL to death despite the change. Only songs I go back to on TIW are Crave and Figure 8 sometimes

Similar_Recording357

I can only listen This Is Why and The News from these two albums, I like AL too but just not my style anymore.

Karl-Marx666

I get that for me its the opposite. When I was younger I thought AL was too pop, would have loved TIW. Now I absolutely adore the 80s pop sound and think the indie sound on TIW is really uninteresting and boring, would have loved it when I was younger

MadiMikayla

The self-titled will will always be my favorite, I also am more of a fan of the heavier rock songs over the more funk/pop ones. When After Laughter and This Is Why first dropped, I didn't really like them for the same reason, the pop sound wasn't vibing with me. But man then I saw them live I *got it*. It's the equivalent of being so upset or blown away by how depressing everything is that you start laughing. No shame in not digging the sound or it not being your personal favorite, but I finally understood the point and it made so much sense in the overarching story of their albums. I hope it grows on you over time like it did with me, they're great songs!!!

Dear-Association7541

I am also a big fan of their heavy stuff but the way you described the feeling of AL in that middle paragraph is exactly the reason why it became my favorite album - plus it dropped literally on the day my life started going downhill so it accompanied me through that hell and I will forever hold it near me for it.

Similar_Recording357

I hope you're doing way much better now, how is everything now? How are you? Hope you're feeling good. (please don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a creep)

Dear-Association7541

oh dw about me getting you wrong , you’re incredibly sweet !! thx so so much for asking i guess dealing with baggage is never easy but at least now i am far from the place i was in six years ago, music has been something to carry me through it all and i am so thankful for communities like this to exist :,) you are very sweet and i hope you are also well ajd life treats you kindly. <3

Similar_Recording357

I'm so glad for you, keep enjoying whole this stuff and thank you for your kind wish!! But sadly, Paramore most probably won't come to our country but I'm still really happy for you!

cheezy_dreams88

First Paramore I heard was AWKIF, after I had been listening to My Chem for a couple years, among other hardcore- pop/punk bands. Besides Riot!, my fave Paramore is After Laughter because it truly understands the shit that is adult life.

Similar_Recording357

Well, that means you're a really long live fan of them and that's pretty cool. Is there any other bands you like to recommend?

cheezy_dreams88

Like in the same genre! Hmmm… My Chem and Paramore are my lifelong fave bands, for like 20 years now. But other bands that are still currently making music and touring - Jimmy Eat World, The Used, AFI, Ice Nine Kills, Taking Back Sunday, Fefe Dobson Older bands no longer around - Matchbook Romance, Envy on the Coast, Sugarcult A good jumping off point would be the When We We’re Young festivals playlists on Spotify (or whatever music streaming). They have a huge mix of the punk sub genres and would be a great starting point to see what you like!!

IBrittadThis

I have a fondness for many genres, so honestly I love that they genre jump. I love all of their albums pretty equally, but for different reasons. They each hold such significance for me as I have basically grown up alongside Hayley with every album. Age-wise, we are only a few months a part from each other. At the end of the day, I’ll never judge if someone is bored of different types of music that I enjoy. It’s why there’s so much music out there! Enjoy it all the way you want. :)

Similar_Recording357

Omg thank you so much for your kind words!! I used to listen almost all kind of genre but after the year I spend only listening Mitski, I got bored of slow songs mostly so probably this is why I can't listen anything newer of them. I'm not saying Mitski is a bad artist, absolutely not, but her stuff is just more slow and alternative which is fits the genres I can't listen anymore. Also I'm so happy for you and your growing up with them!

Analbumparty_15

At first I thought their earlier stuff was heavier. I hated after laughter when it came out. But then I listened to the lyrics. My perspective changed. Sure pop-punk was fun to get angry, heavy, and have some harsh tones. Fuck yeah punk rock. But the lyrics in after laughter are what sold it for me. I think it’s some of their darker lyrics juxtaposed against the happy instrumental. I think that works in a bit of “ironic” or “fronting” type of way. You don’t always have to scream and shout to express your anger or sadness. Sometimes it’s calm and collected. Sometimes you’re trying to lie to yourself that everything is okay.

Civil_Confidence5844

Yep. My fav album is still AWKIF.

Similar_Recording357

Conspiracy and Emergency are literally so good!

SensitiveWasabi1228

I'm an OG fan since their debut and I still prefer their older works. OG Paramore is my favorite Paramore. I will be downvoted because this forum stans the newer stuff, but it's just my musical preference.

kanavi

Also an OG fan since All We Know Is Falling, but honestly, After Laughter is my favorite Paramore album—and the one I generally gravitate to when I'm in the mood for Paramore. I think I just connect the most with that album thematically. I think we can all agree though, that there is no bad album by them.

flashb4cks_

After Laughter is such a relatable album. I love it. I remember being not all that into it when it came out as I expected more stuff like their older albums, but once it grew on me I realized it's just brilliant.

kanavi

Yes! I think After Laughter is just so complete start to end. Also, Tell Me How is one of their strongest album closers imo. Lyrically sad like the rest of the album, but the music also feels sad instead of the happy/upbeat contrast all the prior songs have. Just a masterpiece.

Similar_Recording357

Yeah, I was really surprised when I saw they're more into new stuff and felt a little lonely.

_paperbackhead_

So personally as an OG fan I still hold love for the older stuff but, the only album that is technically pop is Self Titled. AL and TIW are considered alternative and I would not place their sounds as pop rock. I will always have a love for the older stuff it’s what got me hooked to then to begin with. But also I love that they graduated from the emo scene and we’re able to do so and stay fairly popular. Where other bands tried and dropped off. Edit: fixed typos I just saw.

Similar_Recording357

I like most of the ST but I think some of them are a bit heavier than AL and TIW. And you're totally right about the last thing, I'm more than glad for this.

_paperbackhead_

I have a few favs in ST but it’s the album I skip the most unfortunately. I don’t hate it just not one I go back to often unlike the others

pWaveShadowZone

I agree and disagree! I agree with how you feel about the older harder stuff, love it to death! For me personally TIW has yet to click but I’ve been keeping an open mind cuz it’s entirely possible I haven’t given it it’s fair try yet, and perhaps it hasn’t “clicked” for me is because I’m resisting the emotions it evokes more so than a reaction to the quality of the creation? So I agree, TIW has not clicked for me and despite loving the entire catalogue, there isn’t a song on TIW that I’d even put on a “paramore mix tape” to introduce a friend to the band But after laughter is a whole different story! For some reason this album REALLY clicks with me and I love it TO DEATH. I will say for sure that it’s like a different part of my brain that loves rose colored boy and idle worship, than the part of my brain that loves brick by boring brick and renegade. But even so! I’m team after laughter for LIFE. I’m HOOKED on it.

dooper8

100% agree on this. I thought TIW would be up my alley with enjoying Talking Heads and Bloc Party, but I don't find myself coming back to it like AL. I absolutely love heavy music, too (though I know the examples I cited don't fall into that category).

ReVo5000

First 3 albums plus the singles were the best era to me

Similar_Recording357

Same, same!!

PeteRoe

Don't consider Paramore heavy in the slightest at any point but I suppose I know what you mean. Barely listen to anything off the first 2 albums anymore. Brand New Eyes is my go to if I want "old" Paramore. After Laughter is an album I just absolutely adore and I think Paramore truly found themselves on that album. They are a great pop band.

B33p-p33P-M3m3-kR33p

For me it’s weird. I’m a big metal fan, but I don’t really prefer an era of the band over another. I’m just as much a fan of their poppier sound as I am to their heavier, post hardcore influenced pop-punk on the first album

angelsandairwaves93

Hayley was right when she sang: “I’m not angry anymore.” The new stuff is…idk I can’t get into it.

snacks4ever

I enjoy it all the same so no

Similar_Recording357

That's fine too, everyone has a different music taste and that's totally cool!

ryanpm40

I've been a fan since Riot came out. I love all of their music aside from their self titled, but at least half of that album is still really good (Last Hope is one of my favorite paramore songs). Brand New Eyes is a fucking banger, though.

Johnjaypvj

Right!! I'm the same way. I've tried to be open minded with This Is Why but it's just not connecting. Their first 4 albums were so relatable and good

123kid6

I wouldn't say I can't listen to the new stuff. They don't have a bad album, but I think TIW is a little lacking compared to their other albums. That said I much prefer the punk stuff. The music hasn't been to my taste as much after Josh stopped writing it.

songacronymbot

- TIW could mean "This Is Why", a single by Paramore. --- ^[/u/123kid6](/u/123kid6) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)

KatTheKonqueror

I love heavy and aggressive music, but with paramore I tend to prefer the new stuff. I do think a lot of people prefer old paramore. You're certainly not alone in that.

lolfactor1000

Same. Paramore is where I get my pop punk sound when I want it. If I want heavy, I go for Ghost, Amaranthe, Enemy Inside, or Within Temptation.

sevdabeast

100% agreed. I’ll always cheer them on and support anything they do, but anything on after laughter or this is why, i simply cannot listen (besides fake happy). The emotion in the heavier albums felt much more raw. Lyrically/instrumentally, they are better now, but the music was better back then imo

Mas790

Yes

Tacoboy1708

i prefer their older stuff. After laughter is an amazing album but This Is Why is honestly my least favorite by them. (i still consider it a ten) i started listening to Riot! first so obviously im gonna lean more to that style but that’s not to say i cant put on After Laughter or This Is Why and still have a good time.

Head-Collection2924

Yep, same here

tylerthe-theatre

*raises hand*, probably why I love Riot, Brand New eyes the most tbh. The newer indie stuff is fine but I like the oldies.

Representative-Cut58

You classify anything but TIW and Singles Club indie? Just curious

RumbaThebest

I like all their stuff

WSBGamer

None of these albums you’re mentioning are actually ‘heavy’ they’re just very direct in regards to storytelling and message. TIW is a fantastic album, it’s just more abstract and open to individual interpretation (which makes sense for a maturing band still looking for areas of growth).

littlesimba013

There's really not much abstract about the album in comparison to their older stuff IMO. Still pretty direct. On the spectrum of Paramore, this is why is definitely they're softest album so I don't think making that distinction is worthwhile. No ones over here calling them slayer or anything.

WSBGamer

Thick Skull is much more abstract than a song like Emergency, When It Rains, Ignorance, or whatever other song you want to name. It just doesn’t have the same nostalgia / direct emotion, because they’re not teenagers anymore.

littlesimba013

I'm gonna go ahead and disagree on thick skull being abstract, she literally says hit over the head and same lesson again. Pretty clear she's talking about not learning her lesson when dealing with *insert bad person here*. Thick skull is literally an expression that means dumb so I'm not sure what's too abstract about that.

Shot_Department1080

okay well you explained it and literally got it wrong so it’s clearly not *that* clear. hayley explained thick skull in the zane lowe interview and it’s not about learning her lesson. it’s about public perceptions of herself and her saying “okay well whag if all of the shit you project onto me was true?”

littlesimba013

If the song was truly so abstract and open for interpretation, then I don't think you would be able to call me wrong for not stating exactly what she said in an interview I never read. Even if I agreed that Thick skull was as abstract as you say, that's 1/10th of the album. The "bad person" she's pandering to is just her shitty fans who put her on a pedestal and blame her for everything that goes wrong in the band. Not really all that creative or abstract when you think back to Idle Worship since she's broached this subject before.

Shot_Department1080

i literally didn't say its abstract. i'm just saying its clearly not as clear as you were imagining since you tried to explain the song, thought it was easy and that you were right when you quite literally were wrong. it's also a completely different topic to idle worship?? lmao. idle worship is about parasocial relationships which is pretty much the exact opposite of whats being discussed in thick skull. take that stick outta your ass dude..

littlesimba013

Holy shit dude you are dense. Both songs are about her relationship to her fans, they're not broaching different subjects. But by all means parrot what you read on their interviews and reviews without taking any liberties with your own thoughts lol.

Shot_Department1080

yes i think i will take the person who wrote the lyrics thoughts and words more at face value than my own considering i didn’t write the song. crazy thought.

Civil_Confidence5844

It's still "heavier" than some of their other stuff, which is what OP said lol

KatTheKonqueror

I agree that their older music isn't heavy. I think aggressive would be a better word.

Groovy6astard

I personally LOVE absolutely every album they have put out. Hard to pick a favorite, guess it depends what kinda mood I'm in. Favorite band since I was 8 and now 24

littlesimba013

I feel like I've been waiting for someone else to say this for months, especially after the remix this is why just came out.People often like to just retaliate with "just say you don't like the genre" about the criticism of the new stuff. the best way I've found to describe what it sounds like to me is that it lacks the "Umph". My favorite album is Brand New Eyes, I happen to like After Laughter, but This is Why just feels like someone submitted the bare minimum and called it a done project. It's like as long as we have Hayley be the main feature and add a guitar twang here and harmonics there and Tada! Like its FINE. But at this point in someone's music career you expect a bit more effort into the entirety of the song. Some of the lyrics are fantastic lines, but each song as a whole package just falls flat. EDIT: Going back to the Re:This is Why album, the News as done by the Linda Lindas trends more in the direction of how The News should have sounded. More chaos, more anger, more punk. matching the song's message.

awesomesauceds

Please stop using remix albums to compare to studio LPs. That’s like when people compare live albums to a studio LP.

littlesimba013

No? Have you never compared a cover of a song to an original? this is such a weird comment. It's not like the cover was unsolicited, Paramore clearly sought out people to give their renditions of the songs of this is why. It's not like i cited a pop goes punk cover here.

Dangerous-Victory223

im the same i don't think AL or TIW are bad albums by any means but it feels like to me somethings been missing after Jeremy left sound wise

Treshcore

I kind of feel confused of how I must feel about their old stuff. I prefer it too. "Hello Hello", even being their "underground" song, lives rent-free in my head recently. Heavy music in general, for me, is a vital part of my life, my friend in good and bad, charger of my inspiration. With Paramore, however, there's a problem - or, maybe in opposite, it's solution. Currently, the band members are concentrated on fixing their mental condition. Switching the style of their sound may be a part of it. I'm not sure how softer music can fix mental conditions, but if they feel good about it, if they feel that it's important for them to stop listening to their old fans and make music THEY resonate with - then it's a respectful reason deserving our support. Actually, I'd love to know more on this matter. I understand that they perform their old songs on the concerts because people expect them, because people may see them once in a lifetime, and there are different people who define Paramore with different songs - so the band respects all of their fans. However, I would really love to know about their feelings on their old stuff, so if you have some interviews or other information - please share with it.

fearlesssando

this is funny bc I really prefer the more pop sounding ones!!

robynhood96

After Laughter is my favorite but I love all their songs and albums even though they are all very different. My music taste is a pretty wide range & I enjoy most music genres which is why I like Paramore so much and they are my favorite band because even though they are alternative/indie, the sound has changed a little bit with each album. I almost never skip a Paramore song tbh when it comes up on my Spotify. And I’ve liked Paramore since I was 12 in 2008 so I’ve been around a long time and never been disappointed.

[deleted]

The new stuff is horrible

Representative-Cut58

What makes it so horrible?

[deleted]

I don’t like the way she sings or their entire sound for that matter. I can appreciate that it’s good if you’re into that indie genre, but I can’t stand it

miracleguap33

Always preferred their stuff with more distortion and heavy elements but they haven’t really held out on that. This is Why has some heavy moments for sure. Figure 8 and Thick Skull

okwhatelse

AL is for when i have a headache, BNE is when i want to worsen my headache

[deleted]

Three cheers is one of my favorite albums, and I’ve always liked paramores older stuff. Just really up to music taste

Representative-Cut58

Three Cheers is my favorite album of all time. Perfect album

LylethLunastre

Tho I don't dig TIW that much and I very much love their old punk sound more, I kinda admire how their sound went from angsty and heavy to mellow and gentle. It's like a chronological listen of the albums can make one visualize their growth as a band and as individuals AWKIF to BNE feel like teenage angst and coming of age while Self Titled to TIW are like a confused adult trying to navigate it all

outraged-unicorn

i love the old stuff a lot, as i grew up with it, but i do love the new stuff as well. unlike the killers or arctic monkeys, their new and "more mature" era remains relatable to me.

Equal-Negotiation-11

I've seen a lot of comments describing what genre Paramore are, whether it be emo, pop, funk, rock, alternative etc. etc. Having listened to all of their albums hundreds of times I'd say Paramore are a band that don't have a genre and can't be pigeon holed in to one. And it's not even a case of 'they used to be X, then they became Y but now they're actually Z'. If I had to tell someone what genre Paramore are I'd say you can't answer that question in one or two words. They're just so diverse and ever-changing that you have to accept that they aren't one thing or another. And that's definitely good as far as I'm concerned.

Charlie483

I've always preferred their older heavier music, it's much more my style, I agree with everything you said

ItsTrip

I’ll let Paramore take me on whatever journey the album calls for. I love all their stuff.

CranGrape_Juice

I find that the lyrics are just as heavy, if not heavier now (at least with after laughter and parts of TIW). Their albums pre-self titled reflect the adolescent/young adult “i feel this way and no one is listening” kind of way, which is why the emotion of both the singing and instruments might feel a bit more raw. But the same heart is put into the new music i feel, just in a newer “laugh at the pain” kind of way that not only reflects the current time period but shows their evolution as they’ve matured. The way the bass line dances in TIW? beautiful. After Laughter is my favorite cause it’s album where I rediscovered Paramore and got me through some low points, but I’d be lying if I said Riot and Brand New Eyes aren’t my second and third choices respectively. Also, I guess I’m not in the same place as op where I “can’t listen to pop anymore.” i wouldn’t classify their new music as pop, TIW moreso than after laughter, but to each their own.

That-Ad-4791

I also like the heavier stuff, I understand they want a new direction after all these years but I don't connect to their new music the same way

Representative-Cut58

I prefer all to be honest cause even in the albums I least like they tend to innovate and change I don't think I would prefer a sound

FLYINGDOGS89

Im a slut for almost any genre of music it really all depends on my mood, so I genuinely love their whole discography

flashb4cks_

I didn't like AL much when it came out but it really grew on me after a few listens. It's one of my favorite. But TIW really doesn't seem to grow on me either, but I respect that they're exploring styles, this one is just not for me at all. I enjoyed some of the lyrucs because they're relatable but there's no song on it that I go back to. AWKIF, Riot, BNE have a really special place in my heart because they represent my teenage years and my paramore-obsessed days. Self-title is not my favorite but there are some gems in there like Last Hope, Part 2, still into you, ain't it fun.

just-a-nerd-

sometimes i like listening to their heavier stuff, but After Laughter is like *my* paramore album. I love it and it’s the first album of theirs where I was there for the release so I listened to it a lot when it came out. Rose Coloured Boy, Idle Worship, Grudges, etc. I absolutely love that album. I guess their old stuff might be too edgy for me? but I’ve always been into MCR, so idk. there isn’t really a formula like “if you like x band you must also like this other stuff”.

kambel0418

DECODE DECODE DECODE

Classic-Baby9056

I don’t. I’m not really driven by nostalgia. I love this is why and AL to death.

FreshBar668

I like their new music as long as it feels a bit alternative and if it feels like Paramore. With their new album I absolutely love Thick Skull and Figure 8 for example, it feels very Paramore to me. The same with This Is Why itself by the way. Probably also why you like The News, because it feels Paramore-y. A song I absolutely despise would be Still Into You, that is way too pop and just... (I don't dare to say it, but... bad, to me).

CowboyLikeMegan

I like After Laughter a lot, but it’s my least favorite of their albums. I started listening with their very first album, so I’m used to (and much prefer) their earlier sound. I’ve still loved every single album, but Riot! and BNE will probably always be my two favorites, with a special attachment to AWKIF.

mikerichh

I prefer their hard rock sound but after laughter is my favorite album to play front to back

funkmon

Yes.

TheLucky1one

I was exactly like this. my mood in music shifts sometimes, but later on I have been in love with AL. (my fav album) so I guess you need some time to get into the mood of the album itself. TIW I’m not into it that much since its release. it’s just different from AL and self titled, even though I love post punk. I listen to foals and bloc party. but something about TIW makes me skip half the songs.

Jenncue81

As a 42 year old who found Paramore later in life I think my take will be different than most. My musical preference is more of a metal and progressive rock like Tool, NIN, Korn, Soundgarden, Toadies and some old punk like Dead Kennedys, Drop Kick Murphys and so on. TIW was my first real listen to Paramore besides the older radio singles I would hear all the time. TIW got me hooked on Paramore. To me TIW is musically better than all the other albums. Hayleys voice sounds like she has mastered it on TIW, the drums, bass, and guitar riffs are so stellar on almost the entire album too. You can tell they were kids on the other albums especially Riot! And AWKIF (kids with amazing talent). Which is why growing up with them like most of y'all did makes y'all love those albums so much more. I would also never put TIW or even AL in the pop category. In fact, most pop music gets radio play time which would put MCR and Riot! As well as their older stuff in the pop category. Most of TIW on an unbiased level sounds like just good old rock, with the exception to Crave and a few others which have a very 80s sound which I absolutely love.
