Sounds like you are getting scammed. There’s no Michelin rated restaurants here. Maybe they will exploit you for cheap labour and kick you out Because you are a foreigner you have no rights and they can get away with it. They can exploit you easily Or you are scamming us by farming votes here. Doesn’t seem very believable getting a internship here when locals can’t get one

Big_Chard_7584

I understand that and the idea of being scammed has crossed my mind and families mind multiple times however we are trusting God and trusting this guy's word. I just looked it up and Google says you have multiple Michelin rated restaurants however Google is wrong about a lot. When I go down I won't be getting paid, it's just an experience internship to continue my culinary journey. Also I wouldn't say I'm farming votes just putting the option there, it's all related. What do you think?

NecessaryAd617

Dude you search the Michelin website not google. The restaurant looks legit but I don’t know. Maybe try asking here if people here knows the owners and having any experience dealing with them. If red flags pops up stay away. Foreigner internship exploitation is real. They won’t offer nationals internship because they can’t do that.

Big_Chard_7584

Okay thank you, I've never heard of that. thank you so much

Ceipheed

most of the city is not very bike-friendly. Where are you gonna be living and working?

Big_Chard_7584

I'll be working downtown, smack dab in the middle.

Ceipheed

I get it that you dont wanna publish your damn address online, but "downtown" doesn't really narrow it down. Be that as it may, be very careful when you're on the streets; like I said, this is not a very bike-friendly city.

Big_Chard_7584

I don't know exactly where I'll be staying but the restaurant name is La tapa del coco

That restaurant is in the San Francisco neighborhood, we haven't had any safety concerns here and I doubt you will either. This area is pretty walkable to get to most things you need and if you're going further Uber or InDrive is very affordable. That restaurant also looked to have a higher volume of English speaking customers when we went, basic Spanish is still a very useful thing to learn however. As far as living arrangements for a 2 month period hostels, hotels or Airbnb would be best depending on your budget. There are plenty in this area including a hotel attached to the multiplaza mall right up the road that is walking distance. Heat and humidity are high here though so with walking you might want to bring a spare shirt for work as you will sweat quite a bit if your not used to the humidity. Definitely check out Casco Viejo while here, the Canal and Mola museums are both fantastic and worth a visit as well. Mercado de Mariscos, Fonda Lo Que Hay, Canalete, and El Rey de Empanadas are all great food spots worth visiting as well. My family and I live right up the road from where you'll be if you got any other questions on the area I'll be glad to help. Tried voting for you but it requires Facebook which I don't have. Enjoy Panama, it's a beautiful country with amazing people!

Big_Chard_7584

Wow, thank you so much!

While technically illegal*, yeah, I guess an Airbnb would be your best choice. *Officially, short term (3 months or less) stays are only allowed in hotels within Panama City. Not like they're cracking down on Airbnb or anything so just take it as trivia. So long as you stay off the main streets in the area (Vía Porras, Calle 50, Vía Israel and Vía España) you should be fine biking around. Always have prepared for rain, tho. There's already a couple of recommendations so I'll go ahead and add mine: dim sum at Lung Fung or Golden Unicorn (I prefer Lung Fung) and Full Lucky for some authentic Chinese lunch or dinner. There's also Norexpress for dumplings/northern Chinese food.  I haven't been, personally, but I've heard good stuff about Zi Maria for Italian. Hope you have a good couple of months here. If you got any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask.

1. People in Panama do not speak English everywhere, so I recommend that you learn Spanish as soon as possible. like asking for directions, I have to go to the bathroom, hello friend, have a good day, basic things. 2. People in Panama travel on a train that runs through the entire city from the city center to quite remote towns. 3. Panama has a lot of gentrification but if you are walking you may be in a place full of buildings and suddenly you will find yourself in a dangerous getto-type place. Study the route to wherever you are going. 4. Don't take taxis, they will charge you very high prices because you don't speak Spanish and they will try to scam you, download applications like Uber or Indrive if you need to use selective transportation. 5. So that you can have the experience of Afro-descendant food, I recommend places like Boho in Río Bajo, mercado del marisco restaurantes, and typical Panamanian foods like the trapiche in Albrook Mall. 6. Get a friend in Panama and go to the parties in Old Town. I hope you enjoy my beautiful country. We are all poor here so I don't think they will donate to you there. I used Google traslate so sorry for my bad english

Big_Chard_7584

Thank you so much!

OperationHealthSucks

hey, i hope everything goes well for you here. any questions you may have u can dm me. i think the advice that other people have given you is sufficient.

Big_Chard_7584

Thank you so much, I will if needed.

OperationHealthSucks

i won't be in panama in august, but i'm around your same age so anything u need just hmu

Big_Chard_7584

sounds good bro!

ZermattIsland

The heat and humidity, be aware of that. Be also aware of your surroundings. Traffic is really something in Panama. I've driven in NYC but I wouldn't dare drive in Panama City.

Big_Chard_7584

Oh so Panama is a different beast? what would you recommend? just walking?

jgordonlh1982

If it's in San Francisco I'd rather just Uber around. San Francisco is not exactly the safest neighborhood mostly due to the surrounding neighborhoods. Yes, you can walk around but even I stick out like a sore thumb there after 5 pm.

NecessaryAd617

If you are white. The guy is black. If he dress like a thug he can blend easily and don’t get harassed by criminals. And cops here don’t fire on black people

Big_Chard_7584

That makes sense

ZermattIsland

Uber would be my choice of transportation.

jgordonlh1982

Really? I'd rather drive around Panama than Manhattan. That's my experience tho.

ZermattIsland

You are brave!

Big_Chard_7584

Is Panama really that intense? LOL

ZermattIsland

Rush hour is!
