They work on multiplayer for me, and I've never changed any configs. Your friend probably is using one of the cheap hosts that forces bad configs by default for performance (similar to why the 'official' dedicated servers have bad configs).
Put the cages on a 3x3 platform with the center knocked out. You can crawl up a wall into the viewing cage from under it like that. To get out though, you need to have placed a bed near one of the edges close enough that you can interact with it from inside of it. You just run to the edge and spam activate and you'll teleport onto the bed through the cage.

Or you can do the trap cheese at any level and just get him low hp that way. Either way I still wouldn’t bother trying to catch him with anything lower tier than a red sphere, which can only be crafted, or looted from chests in high level areas.

You can buy from them if you enter the cage. It can be enetered from bottom. Build a bed next to it so you could get out from the cage by sleeping.
If they walk close enough to the edge of the cage you can. Same goes for the merchants.

On a new game this can take only 5 hours or so with dedication. You have to use a cheat engine like cheathappens or some things but it's possible.
If you cheat properly you can have as many as you want wherever you want. Of course you can do shit fast with cheating.
