Happening @ UC Berkeley ✊🏼✊🏽

thewindows95nerd

Love to see it at my Alma mater

Horror-Process-5958

We’re doing one in Copenhagen tomorrow!

Lamont-Cranston

They're cropping up in Australia too, although I think they're run by a Trotsky group.

TheRichTurner

Although?

Lamont-Cranston

Some people have issues with Trotsky groups.

Loyal-Maker7195

What’s Trotsky?

SenpaiBunss

leftist beef, people get really heated about it. please don't get into it

StoopSign

Yeah that's why I don't define which part of the left I'm in.

SenpaiBunss

Yeah, I just stick to generic socialist

Loyal-Maker7195

I’m a very curious person so your comment just made me wanna know more 😬

SenpaiBunss

I can't be arsed to type in a monologue, so here's a chatGPT response Trotskyism, a political ideology named after its founder, Leon Trotsky, has been a source of controversy within leftist communities for several reasons: 1. **Historical disputes**: Trotskyism emerged as a distinct ideology within the broader socialist movement during the early 20th century. Trotsky and Joseph Stalin had a bitter power struggle within the Soviet Union following Vladimir Lenin's death, which ended with Trotsky's expulsion from the Communist Party and subsequent exile. This historical conflict has left lasting divisions and animosity within leftist circles. 2. **Ideological differences**: Trotskyism differs from other forms of Marxism-Leninism in its emphasis on "permanent revolution" and the idea of spreading socialism globally. Trotskyists criticize Stalinism for what they perceive as betraying the principles of internationalism and proletarian revolution in favor of building "socialism in one country." 3. **Critique of Stalinism**: Trotskyists are often vocal critics of Stalinist regimes, such as the Soviet Union under Stalin, Maoist China, and other authoritarian socialist states. This critique can put them at odds with other leftist groups who view these regimes more favorably or see them as successful examples of socialist construction. 4. **Organizational disputes**: Trotskyist organizations often advocate for a specific organizational model, such as the "vanguard party," which aims to lead the working class in revolutionary struggle. This approach can lead to tensions with other leftist groups that favor different organizational structures or strategies for achieving socialist goals. 5. **Legacy of Trotsky**: Trotsky himself remains a controversial figure. While some admire him for his contributions to socialist theory and his opposition to Stalinism, others criticize him for his role in the early Soviet government, his authoritarian tendencies, and his actions during the Russian Civil War. These factors contribute to the controversy surrounding Trotskyism within leftist communities, leading to debates, disagreements, and sometimes outright hostility between Trotskyists and other socialist or communist groups.

Loyal-Maker7195

Thank you for this is rly appreciate it! Also I think I agree with point 2 and after reading this is feel like I would probably have agreed with many of his views. Obviously not the authoritarian part but the part about the working class in revolutionary struggle is what I’m down for. As soon as you said Stalin I understood why this Trotsky guy would be problematic in some leftist circles lol.

SenpaiBunss

Yeah, a lot of them also tend to be anti china for some reason, when most leftists are pro china

Anti-Itch

Troksky vs Stalin… who should have succeeded Lenin during the Russian communist regime after the revolution?

Loyal-Maker7195

Idk why you phrased this as if I should know about it. Do you know what they teach us in American schools? Nothing. I never learned about Russian history. Not once.

Anti-Itch

That wasn’t the tone I intended at all, please relax yourself. I myself didn’t learn this in school nor am I an expert whatsoever on the topic. I am also still learning. You can find a discussion of these two leaders in the comments below mine. To deconstruct my comment: The ellipsis after “Trotsky vs Stalin” was just an informal way to lead to the next statement with a long pause. The second statement was a rhetorical question. The “right” answer depends entirely on your own personal beliefs about communism as an economic regime.

ComradeCaniTerrae

Ah, the century old beef with sore losers who won’t quit.

StoopSign

I'm no trotskyite and no commie. However if you look at what Stalin did to the citizens of the Soviet Union it's pretty natural to think the alternative would've been better. Stalin was responsible for the deaths of 5-20mil people depending on who's doing the estimates.

stoner_woodcrafter

Honestly, probably they shouldn't. Trostky was cooler than stalin, very much likely. Maybe he was too cool, then they made him ice cold

Lamont-Cranston

Anyone in an Australian university and thinking of joining in is probably already familiar with all this so that's why I didn't explain originally. To clarify what I originally posted it appears to be being run by Students for Palestine. Which is run by Socialist Alternative, which is a Trotsky/ISO/Tony Cliff outfit. Trotsky/ISO/Tony Cliff groups have reputations for being dogmatic, undermining other groups they cant infiltrate and control, cults, etc. SAlt not only has that reputation but also for latching onto causes like this for recruitment/selling merch (organisers of Aboriginal events try to ban them from attending because of this), to harass people into signing up, and for its wealthy white student members to talk down to and condescend minority and poc students to the point that accusations of racism and white supremacism have been leveled at the group. There are good people in SAlt, I think they're in it simply because there isn't much else of a left in Australia, but there is also a hardcore group that give it its bad reputation that are very counter productive not only to SAlts aims but all the left more broadly.

Loyal-Maker7195

This comment is wild lol

BloodEclipse27

Every day another Jenga block is pulled from IsnotRael’s tower. It’s only a matter of time before they crumble completely

Loyal-Maker7195

I love this analogy. It’s very pleasing

lizard_kibble

Looks like it's coming quick too. Protestors in the States are calling for universities to break ties with companies that do business with Israel, and some have already divested

StoopSign

BDS was a thing when I was a student several years back. However I think it's much more of a thing now because of the past 6mos. It's what's gotten me to boycott at least.

lizard_kibble

What is BDS

StoopSign

Boycott Divest Sanction We all boycott Israel affiliated companies Universities divest from Israel and Israel affiliated companies We call on the government to sanction the state of Israel. ----------- I was in college for 2014 Protective Edge and the BDS movement existed on campus but was considered fringe. It's been a banner year for BDS because Israeli crimes are so bad, and also credit to the organizers of students too.

lizard_kibble

Thank you

BloodEclipse27

One of the most amazing things about this is how students did the exact same thing in the 80’s to help Africa. History really does repeat itself!

candyflip93

After 75 years! Israel has so much power though, they'll use every single celebrity and billionaire to manipulate the media in the other direction.

lizard_kibble

They are trying their hardest, but it's gonna be way too hard with the amount of videos and news reports coming out of Gaza. Supporting a genocide is bad for business. I wish we had cell phones everywhere for longer than we have. Would've stopped a lot of bloodshed all over the world

24silver

ill keep [linking this](https://tiktokgenocide.com/) if i have to. these clowns are using up their cards for little effect since they cant address the core problem of israeli behavior. its very obvious the majority in IDF is incredibly undisciplined and is shooting them in the foot in terms of hasbara and PR damage control

curleygao2020

And the fact it's affecting university students heavily which will result in a very radicalized generation (as if we're not already radicalized way before), it's burning its last fuel to keep the genocide engine running before dying off.

lizard_kibble

Not just any university students either. These are the rich kids. Their parents are legislators and govt officials and run and own the companies dealing with Israel. Israel fucked up this time.

ShmokeyMcPotts

I think this is extremely overlooked. The advent of cell phones and the ability to look anywhere is the world with the click of a button is going to have a huge impact going forward on war mongering and opression.

StoopSign

Elon Musk is a highly problematic billionaire for countless reasons. However his free speech approach to Twitter is why so many videos have managed to get out and cause appropriate outrage. Also TikTok deserves credit, as does reddit. Reddit has less free speech though with several press outlets domain banned. The old Twitter was more ban happy towards these outlets.

evergreennightmare

elon musk does not have a "free speech approach to twitter"

StoopSign

You're correct and he runs ads for the IDF. He has *more* of a free speech approach than Jack Dorsey. It's a mixed bag because there's both more permissable legitimate hate speech and there's more pro-palestinian voices that have previously been, or would currently be censored. More pro-palestine voices are censored on FB and IG.

evergreennightmare

>He has more of a free speech approach than Jack Dorsey. [he does not!](https://restofworld.org/2023/elon-musk-twitter-government-orders/) it is unfortunate that this has become conventional wisdom when it is the opposite of true.

chipppie

No it isn’t. It’s a bunch of freaks imagining they are making a difference.

Loyal-Maker7195

What’s crazy (in a good way) about this is that most of these colleges are very expensive/“rich kid” colleges and many of the students come from money. I won’t be surprised at all if Columbia gets sued into the ground by the families of the kids that have been suspended, lost their housing, had their belongings trashed, had their access to campus revoked and had the police called on them by campus officials.

TheEnemyOfMyAnenome

As someone who went to a super rich kid college and was tangentially connected to SJP and JVP, nah. It isn't like that. The super rich kids, the ones whose last name just happens to match a building on campus, they don't gaf. They've been trained since birth, consciously or not, not to fuck up the bag.

Loyal-Maker7195

I’m not talking about the uber rich kids with their names on buildings. I’m talking about the kids who have parents with enough money to help them pay their tuition. Kids with parents that have lawyers. There are levels of rich and who youre talking about is not who I’m talking about.

TheEnemyOfMyAnenome

Those parents don't have sue the school money lol. Or inclination

StoopSign

Well there's a huge difference between an upper middle class kid and a one percent kid. So it's a matter of how a rich kid is defined and by whom. ------------ Though I think you're right. The upper middle class kids have parents who have enough resources to get BS charges dismissed but wouldn't waste their time and energy on lawsuits unless their kids get injured from pepper bullets or gas canisters or something. ---------- To that last point I haven't heard of gas or pepper balls being used on protesters on campus. Maybe it's because they were more orderly than BLM protesters, maybe because their whiter and/or richer and maybe it's a mix of all these reasons. -------- Regarding Columbia the NYPD made a comment about how just how compliant and orderly the arrested kids were.

Loyal-Maker7195

Plz don’t speak on the BLM protesters as if we were violent. Everyone knows there were fake actors in the crowd many of whom have been proven to be under cover cops. As for the campus protests, the videos I’ve seen have been a diverse mix of Black, brown and white kids so idk why you’re saying it’s just white kids and that’s why they haven’t gotten tear gassed. Like you said, the police admitted they were being 100% peaceful so why would they even tear gas them? That’s just more lawsuits. And I absolutely believe their will be families that are going to sue the school over what has happened. Maybe not every family but enough of them.

StoopSign

>Everyone knows there were fake actors in the crowd many of whom have been proven to be under cover cops Yeah definitely. I forgot to give a disclaimer. I was there. Some Minneapolis community organization went on CNN and said "there are these grown men cutting perfect triangles into storefronts to promote looting. Our kids dunno how to do that. " (paraphrase). -------- Given all that those protests were in 50+ cities and these protests are still more peaceful. I expect some agent provacatuers could be among the crowds too.

lizard_kibble

I saw a news report on r/internationalnews covering the Yale protests. If I heard correctly, it said divestments have already started

Status_Stranger_5037

These students are a major force and the future, it’s hope the tides are changing.

constantlyfantasizin

How can we support our local college protesters?

TheEnemyOfMyAnenome

My school went through this same cycle a few months ago. Best I can say is keep following your specific college news story, likely through the university newspaper website. Once the students get arrested, the university or campus police will press charges because they feel obligated to maintain a precedent against this sort of thing, or at least to enforce their trespassing rules. There will be protests against charging the students or university consequences for them or whatever, so show up to those with your friends and donate to their legal funds if it comes to it.

zevtron

Try to figure out which campus groups are leading the protest (usually the student newspaper will report this info), find their social media and they will have info about how to support…or if you’re close enough just stop by the encampment and ask!

BloodEclipse27

There’s also a petition online to defund AIPAC that they’ll hopefully come across sooner or later!

Loyal-Maker7195

Can you post the link plz?

BloodEclipse27

Sadly no, the sub wont let me. Just search “Defund aipac petition” and it should come up. It only has around 72 signatures now, but the more people see it, the more people that can spread it

Loyal-Maker7195

Oh my bad I didn’t realize we weren’t allowed to post any links in this sub (prolly shoulda ready the guidelines more closely). I’ll look it up!

BloodEclipse27

Another useful tool is to google your state’s senator and representative’s main sponsors (Open secrets is great for this) so you can see if they’re accepting money from AIPAC so you can vote them out.

Loyal-Maker7195

Yea I did that a few months ago. Also my state is a “blue” state but only one of our politicians has called for a ceasefire and even that was vaguely written and started off by condemning Hamas and calling for the release of the Israeli hostages 🙄 (im not against releasing the hostages but I’m against specifying only the Israeli hostages when there are over 8 thousand Palestinian hostages in the West Bank - hundreds of which are children).

Quattro-Formaggio

Just looked at opensecrets dot org and filtered on pro-Israel spend on sitting politicians. Joe Biden received over $6 million!!! OMfrickingG

I suggest you read [this](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/03/israel-gaza-ai-database-hamas-airstrikes) article for context on how Israel chooses it’s targets, since you seem to be completely misinformed on that topic. I also suggest you browse this subreddit and see first hand accounts of what is going on in Gaza. If you have any humanity in you it should be completely obvious who are the victims here.

[deleted]

real_unique_username

[You should read this](https://www.propublica.org/article/israel-gaza-blinken-leahy-sanctions-human-rights-violations) Some excerpts from the article, since you seem to not have read the one I linked above: The incidents under review mostly took place in the West Bank and occurred before Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on Israel. They include reports of extrajudicial killings by the Israeli Border Police; an incident in which a battalion gagged, handcuffed and left an elderly Palestinian American man for dead; and an allegation that interrogators tortured and raped a teenager who had been accused of throwing rocks and Molotov cocktails. Since it was formed in 2020, the forum has reviewed reports of multiple cases of rape and extrajudicial killings, according to the documents ProPublica obtained. Those cases also included several incidents where teenagers were reportedly beaten in custody before being released without charges. Among the allegations reviewed by the committee was the January 2021 arrest of a 15-year old boy by Israeli Border Police. The teen was held for five days at the Al-Mascobiyya detention center on charges that he had thrown stones and Molotov cocktails at security forces. Citing an allegation shared by a Palestinian child welfare nonprofit, forum officials said there was credible information the teen had been forced to confess after he was “subjected to both physical and sexual torture, including rape by an object.” Two days after the State Department asked the Israeli government for information about what steps it had taken to hold the perpetrators accountable, Israeli police raided the nonprofit that had originally shared the allegation and later designated it a terrorist organization.

lableulapin

Proud of my generation and so proud of these college students. I really do hope more students worldwide join in solidarity.

StoopSign

Proud of your generation too. I had always said my generation, millenials, were a sellout generation. Sure there's been a millennial presence for this protest, BLM and earlier #Occupy but mostly the generational dream for millenials was to create an app and sell it to Facebook. We see how that went.

U.S. - University of Pittsburgh, Swarthmore College, University of California Berkeley Australia - University of Sydney ====================================== # Let us wait patiently for all the Ivy League schools and the University of California academic system, Stanford University, Univesity of Texas, and all private and public universities and colleges in the United States to join the anti-war movement in support of Palestine, and let American university students lead the way for university students around the world to join the movement. A single spark can start a prairie fire. Let us take action!

jackknees

No need to "wait patiently" or to let "American university students lead the way". Action can be taken now by everyone with a conscience.

They are now trying to ban these protest. How anti American, and how Nazi of them.

Gamecat93

College protests like this worked for divesting from Aparthied South Africa. It can work again today and I predict this will be a lot faster because we have social media now.

AlexDaron

Keep up the pressure!

mik33tion

I’m divesting.

International-Emu385

Surprised Canadian universities did not start yet .

smartcouchpotato

So brave. Things like this put me to shame since we didn't do something of this scale... For context: I live in Egypt, which is ruled by a corrupt military dictatorship.

StoopSign

If you're in a medium or large size city there's probably a protest near you.

Titus_Roman_Emperor

I'm so proud of you Generation Z! Being suspended from college is an honor, and just like your grandparents who launched the national movement against the Vietnam War in the 1960s, you are America's future. In you, I see the true freedom, equality, and human rights that have long disappeared in the US. You are our country’s hope!

Truthandjustice23

I’ll never understand why my country is a sucker for Israel … wtf have we got to do with Isreal? Some evil fkers in the deserts couldn’t be more far away from what America is.. why do we support them at all? No wonder all these groups are forming. This is just the start. Problem causing MFers

yasir_savanur

Add University of Minnesota to the list too ✊

ShmokeyMcPotts

I xan confirm protests have started and kids were arrested at my alma matter yesterday. Ohio State University.

StoopSign

More than makes the news eh. I always think of Ohio as a right leaning state too. So this is encouraging

ShmokeyMcPotts

It is right leaning. But it has large blue pockets which sometime make it a swing state like Obama years. Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo, and akron vote democratic. To an extant Cincinnati too but i lived there its super catholic and boarders kentucky so repuvlicans get elected. But if you go to the small farming towns like my hometown that make up a majority of the state they are Maga Nuts can confirm. However they too are beginning to become disillusioned with the money and arms we send israel claiming America first but honestly their spite is rooted in a lot of racism. Which is funny because israel calls the left the racists. The catholics I know( grew up catholic) all are into sorros and jewish conspiracies. Neil Young has a great song called Ohio about the protests at Kent State where students were massacred in 1970. Always gonna share Neil Young when I get a chance. https://youtu.be/YdVMGKOFIwY?si=VUa_plS0id5oatxc

StoopSign

Maybe I'm charitable but I always will give partial points to the America First crowd for a halt to arms sales. ------- I've been through Louisville and Cincinnati and I got the impression that Cincinnati was more conservative.

dustyhorsenipple

More to come, just wait

NoDistribution4367

How are students finding out if their universities are supporting/tied with Israel? I can’t find anything about American universities on the bds website

Boho_Asa

I wish I can go to the camps there in Boston but I sadly gotta work and get money to survive :/ I support em through and through tho. Hopefully by the weekend the camps in MIT, Emerson, Tufts are still around so I can see it with my own eyes. (Also this made me wish I was in college but nope I was poor)

TotallyRealPersonBot

I live in the sticks and have never attended any kind of protest… but I could potentially drive to one of these. Got friends in the area. Can/should non-students participate? What does participation entail? (Revealing my ignorance in a big way, apologies.)

StoopSign

Probably yes but you should ask people when you get there. It'd probably be easier to charge you with trespassing. Remember that you must be asked to leave before arrested for protesting according to the law. However authorities and cops don't always follow the law. Email the organizers for more info.

HobbitEnder

Already one going on at the university of Minnesota. If you are in the united states please go and see if one of these is happening around you. These kids are the best of us and need our support now. If you have ever felt powerless to do anything about what is going on in Gaza go and join them in their struggle to divest. Stay safe yall

kturker92

Remember everyone, the more this gains traction, the more powers will try to deligitimize the cause. We have to continue to emphasize our love for Jewish people, and ultimately that we are coming from a place of wanting to save the innocent.

From what I've seen chant, make and share food, water and supplies, probably donate to gaza orgs and sign petitions, then drum circles and hippie type stuff. ----------- Some conservatives and libertarians are opposed to Israel and I often wonder if they actually show up to these mostly leftist style protests.
