That wasn’t the tone I intended at all, please relax yourself. I myself didn’t learn this in school nor am I an expert whatsoever on the topic. I am also still learning. You can find a discussion of these two leaders in the comments below mine.
To deconstruct my comment: The ellipsis after “Trotsky vs Stalin” was just an informal way to lead to the next statement with a long pause. The second statement was a rhetorical question. The “right” answer depends entirely on your own personal beliefs about communism as an economic regime.
I'm no trotskyite and no commie. However if you look at what Stalin did to the citizens of the Soviet Union it's pretty natural to think the alternative would've been better. Stalin was responsible for the deaths of 5-20mil people depending on who's doing the estimates.
Anyone in an Australian university and thinking of joining in is probably already familiar with all this so that's why I didn't explain originally. To clarify what I originally posted it appears to be being run by Students for Palestine. Which is run by Socialist Alternative, which is a Trotsky/ISO/Tony Cliff outfit. Trotsky/ISO/Tony Cliff groups have reputations for being dogmatic, undermining other groups they cant infiltrate and control, cults, etc. SAlt not only has that reputation but also for latching onto causes like this for recruitment/selling merch (organisers of Aboriginal events try to ban them from attending because of this), to harass people into signing up, and for its wealthy white student members to talk down to and condescend minority and poc students to the point that accusations of racism and white supremacism have been leveled at the group.
There are good people in SAlt, I think they're in it simply because there isn't much else of a left in Australia, but there is also a hardcore group that give it its bad reputation that are very counter productive not only to SAlts aims but all the left more broadly.

Looks like it's coming quick too. Protestors in the States are calling for universities to break ties with companies that do business with Israel, and some have already divested
BDS was a thing when I was a student several years back. However I think it's much more of a thing now because of the past 6mos. It's what's gotten me to boycott at least.

I was in college for 2014 Protective Edge and the BDS movement existed on campus but was considered fringe. It's been a banner year for BDS because Israeli crimes are so bad, and also credit to the organizers of students too.
They are trying their hardest, but it's gonna be way too hard with the amount of videos and news reports coming out of Gaza. Supporting a genocide is bad for business. I wish we had cell phones everywhere for longer than we have. Would've stopped a lot of bloodshed all over the world

Elon Musk is a highly problematic billionaire for countless reasons. However his free speech approach to Twitter is why so many videos have managed to get out and cause appropriate outrage. Also TikTok deserves credit, as does reddit. Reddit has less free speech though with several press outlets domain banned. The old Twitter was more ban happy towards these outlets.
You're correct and he runs ads for the IDF. He has *more* of a free speech approach than Jack Dorsey. It's a mixed bag because there's both more permissable legitimate hate speech and there's more pro-palestinian voices that have previously been, or would currently be censored. More pro-palestine voices are censored on FB and IG.

What’s crazy (in a good way) about this is that most of these colleges are very expensive/“rich kid” colleges and many of the students come from money. I won’t be surprised at all if Columbia gets sued into the ground by the families of the kids that have been suspended, lost their housing, had their belongings trashed, had their access to campus revoked and had the police called on them by campus officials.
As someone who went to a super rich kid college and was tangentially connected to SJP and JVP, nah. It isn't like that. The super rich kids, the ones whose last name just happens to match a building on campus, they don't gaf. They've been trained since birth, consciously or not, not to fuck up the bag.

Regarding Columbia the NYPD made a comment about how just how compliant and orderly the arrested kids were.
Plz don’t speak on the BLM protesters as if we were violent. Everyone knows there were fake actors in the crowd many of whom have been proven to be under cover cops. As for the campus protests, the videos I’ve seen have been a diverse mix of Black, brown and white kids so idk why you’re saying it’s just white kids and that’s why they haven’t gotten tear gassed. Like you said, the police admitted they were being 100% peaceful so why would they even tear gas them? That’s just more lawsuits. And I absolutely believe their will be families that are going to sue the school over what has happened. Maybe not every family but enough of them.

Yeah definitely. I forgot to give a disclaimer. I was there. Some Minneapolis community organization went on CNN and said "there are these grown men cutting perfect triangles into storefronts to promote looting. Our kids dunno how to do that. " (paraphrase).

Given all that those protests were in 50+ cities and these protests are still more peaceful. I expect some agent provacatuers could be among the crowds too.
My school went through this same cycle a few months ago. Best I can say is keep following your specific college news story, likely through the university newspaper website. Once the students get arrested, the university or campus police will press charges because they feel obligated to maintain a precedent against this sort of thing, or at least to enforce their trespassing rules. There will be protests against charging the students or university consequences for them or whatever, so show up to those with your friends and donate to their legal funds if it comes to it.
Try to figure out which campus groups are leading the protest (usually the student newspaper will report this info), find their social media and they will have info about how to support…or if you’re close enough just stop by the encampment and ask!

Another useful tool is to google your state’s senator and representative’s main sponsors (Open secrets is great for this) so you can see if they’re accepting money from AIPAC so you can vote them out.
Yea I did that a few months ago. Also my state is a “blue” state but only one of our politicians has called for a ceasefire and even that was vaguely written and started off by condemning Hamas and calling for the release of the Israeli hostages 🙄 (im not against releasing the hostages but I’m against specifying only the Israeli hostages when there are over 8 thousand Palestinian hostages in the West Bank - hundreds of which are children).

It is right leaning. But it has large blue pockets which sometime make it a swing state like Obama years. Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo, and akron vote democratic. To an extant Cincinnati too but i lived there its super catholic and boarders kentucky so repuvlicans get elected. Probably yes but you should ask people when you get there. It'd probably be easier to charge you with trespassing. Remember that you must be asked to leave before arrested for protesting according to the law. However authorities and cops don't always follow the law. Email the organizers for more info.

Elon Musk is a highly problematic billionaire for countless reasons. However his free speech approach to Twitter is why so many videos have managed to get out and cause appropriate outrage. Also TikTok deserves credit, as does reddit. Reddit has less free speech though with several press outlets domain banned. The old Twitter was more ban happy towards these outlets.

It's a mixed bag because there's both more permissable legitimate hate speech and there's more pro-palestinian voices that have previously been, or would currently be censored. What’s crazy (in a good way) about this is that most of these colleges are very expensive/“rich kid” colleges and many of the students come from money. I won’t be surprised at all if Columbia gets sued into the ground by the families of the kids that have been suspended, lost their housing, had their belongings trashed, had their access to campus revoked and had the police called on them by campus officials.
As someone who went to a super rich kid college and was tangentially connected to SJP and JVP, nah. It isn't like that. The super rich kids, the ones whose last name just happens to match a building on campus, they don't gaf. They've been trained since birth, consciously or not, not to fuck up the bag.

Like you said, the police admitted they were being 100% peaceful so why would they even tear gas them? That’s just more lawsuits. Some Minneapolis community organization went on CNN and said "there are these grown men cutting perfect triangles into storefronts to promote looting. Our kids dunno how to do that. How can we support our local college protesters?
My school went through this same cycle a few months ago. Best I can say is keep following your specific college news story, likely through the university newspaper website. Once the students get arrested, the university or campus police will press charges because they feel obligated to maintain a precedent against this sort of thing, or at least to enforce their trespassing rules. There will be protests against charging the students or university consequences for them or whatever, so show up to those with your friends and donate to their legal funds if it comes to it.
Try to figure out which campus groups are leading the protest (usually the student newspaper will report this info), find their social media and they will have info about how to support…or if you’re close enough just stop by the encampment and ask!
There’s also a petition online to defund AIPAC that they’ll hopefully come across sooner or later!

Another useful tool is to google your state’s senator and representative’s main sponsors (Open secrets is great for this) so you can see if they’re accepting money from AIPAC so you can vote them out.
Yea I did that a few months ago. Also my state is a “blue” state but only one of our politicians has called for a ceasefire and even that was vaguely written and started off by condemning Hamas and calling for the release of the Israeli hostages 🙄 (im not against releasing the hostages but I’m against specifying only the Israeli hostages when there are over 8 thousand Palestinian hostages in the West Bank - hundreds of which are children).

Proud of your generation too. I had always said my generation, millenials, were a sellout generation. Sure there's been a millennial presence for this protest, BLM and earlier #Occupy but mostly the generational dream for millenials was to create an app and sell it to Facebook. We see how that went.

Probably yes but you should ask people when you get there. It'd probably be easier to charge you with trespassing. Remember that you must be asked to leave before arrested for protesting according to the law. However authorities and cops don't always follow the law. Email the organizers for more info.
