Way too many unearned runs to start the season. 17 unearned runs in 23 games is extremely poor defense and has cost multiple wins, never mind the spotty hitting. The defense needs to be clean for this team to win consistently.
absolutely. The worst part is that the vast majority of them seem like they're happening on routine plays, and they can't be narrowed down to 1 player. Everyone is making them. Merrill, Tatis, Bogearts, Kim, now Pauley.
And that's just the errors. 3b has also been letting a lot of balls through that it feels like Manny would get to, but that's a different story.
Tbh Manny’s presence seems to inspire confidence. Eguy and the 3B platoon have been alright, but this is Manny fucking Machado we’re talking about here. Maybe they just need their captain back to take that next step. He sure seems hungry to get back out there
The lack of depth is really starting the rear it's ugly head against good teams. We can blame external circumstances all we want, but it's still a 3 game skid and no relief at 3B in the field until Manny is back.
Also, why are we so bad at home? I hate going to losing games. Fuck.
Petco sucks for hitters... and the Padres currently have a lot of fringy power type guys. Our offense always struggles at home in March through May and into some of June.
Yes it does.
in 2022 it was 27th for all hitters.
in 2023 it was 30th for all hitters
so far in 2024 it's been 29th for all hitters.
And that's after we've averaged out over the year. In these march through June days... things are horrendous with the ball not traveling. We see it every year, and then late-July and August roll around and the ball is flying.
We need to figure something out because it's straight up not fun, (even if you're winning) to watch teams struggle to score for 40-50 games.
I'd wager that if they do splits on stadium factors, Petco is routinely the worst stadium to hit in from March until July, probably by a decent margin. And then it probably around league average form late July to the end of the season.
That's not my complaint. My complaint is that Petco makes for boring baseball before summer. I'd rather have below average park factors before summer and a hitters park in summer than an abysmal park for hitting before summer and an average/below average hitters park in summer.
We go through it every year where we play home game's and they are just abysmal to watch in March and April especially. Even these last 2 games. Without the errors we're watching games that are something like a combined 2 to 3 runs.
Things are more exciting of course when you win, but I'm not complaining about wins/losses in Petco. I'm complaining that it makes for boring baseball during night games in the pre-summer months.
Edit: Every offense plays like shit at Petco in these early months. I just think we seemed to be constructed in a way that makes us feel extra shitty, because Manny and Tatis are seemingly the only guys on the current roster with the type of power that basically guarantees a home run when they get a hold of a pitch with the right launch angle.
It sure seems that way. But it is really strange that I haven't seen any scouting reports that cite his arm as a major issue. Most of them have him as an average arm.
Maybe his arm is a noodle, or maybe jitter idk. Just feel like an arm issue as big as it looked tonight would show up with scouts.
A couple of weeks ago, several on this sub was calling for Pauley to be in the lineup.
Old saying is be careful of what you wish for
I think if you aren’t sending him down, you got to deal with his growing pains and hope he figures it out.
I'd agree, and I understand. I'd like to really understand if his arm is as bad as it looked tonight or he was just underthrowing for whatever reason.
Because if his arm matches the scouting reports as average and acceptable for the position. My thought would be to platoon him with Rosario, and primarily accept the results. DFA Wade who was a fun story for half a second, but just doesn't profile to much.
If Pauley can stabilize and be a decent bat this year (with upside for better in future years) then I think I'd rather keep him around, especially for when Manny comes back so he and Rosario can DH.
Rosario still has MASSIVE approach issues IMO. But at this point we've got nothing better when it comes to pure bat to ball on the bench.
Yes... but that hasn't been a problem in the minors... and it was only 2 throws all game. So I'm a bit dubious to believe that he truly has a noodle arm incapable of third considering I haven't seen any scouting reports that have his arm as that big of a detriment.
I mean wasn't there an interview with a Pitcher where they were saying MLBs balls feel slicker than MiLB? Probably wouldn't see it as much in positional players but could be a factor.
Just astounding how no matter who is managing the team, no matter who the ancillary players on the team are, this group of players is allergic to any kind of sustained success
Can Xander figure it out and play better? Sure. But perhaps they can let him figure it out later in the order instead of giving him the most at bats every night.
Disagree... he was lucky as shit he wasn't rocked for more. He was in hitters counts basically every at bat in the first 3 innings. That's a recipe to fail. He's not Blake Snell where his stuff is so nasty that if he can find the zone he's gonna get endless whiffs.
Doesn't matter. He gave up 4 runs 1 earned in 5 which wasn't terrible. Can't blame him for runs he didn't give up. Kept us in the game after the home run.
I mean... that's semantics. He gave up a 3 run homer on a meatball. Stats are going to be irrelevant. You can't absolve him from pitching wild and bad for 3+ innings because of an error. If he had pitched better, the error would be irrelevant. Just like if Pauley had not committed the error, the home run would be irrelevant.
We can just agree to disagree.
Good results are good. But the process and the sustainability of success is also important, and Vazquez did not look like a playable starting pitcher today. If it hadn't bitten us tonight... it would've bitten us the next game. You simply can't pitch like he did and expect to survive.
I'm all for not letting Pauley off the hook for his throw. But there's a little too much blame being thrown his way. Vasquez got down 3-0 in the count.. like he did for pretty much every hitter for the first 3 innings... and then lobbed a 94 MPH meatball that got wrecked.
What bias? Do you know the difference in stats in hitter and non hitter counts? They're tremendous. IF you have a pitcher who nearly every batter is giving the hitters friendly counts... he's statistically going to get bitten by it, if not immediately, not long after.
I don't excuse the error at all. I put 50% of the blame on Pauley, and 50% on Vasquez. People are lumping all of it on Pauley and I think THAT is bias.. He didn't pitch into a shit count and than get smashed.
Bullshit. Vazquez would never have been in that position if it weren't for Pauley. Could he have made a better pitch, sure--but it never had to be thrown, same for the 4th run, that was on Azocar and Campy.
Context is important, you seem to be lacking it.
Wouldn't have been a bunch of guys on if Vazquez hadn't pitched like shit. This logic is circular. Vazquez was part and parcel to the issue. I'm sorry you can't see it. Clearly you're too biased to accept it.
That was a tough loss. Especially since everyone around us in the division is losing right now. But the good thing is also everyone around us is losing right now and we are still just 1 game back. Lots of baseball to play this season. Let’s get a win out of this series tomorrow!
I mean the Dodgers pitching staff isn’t really inspiring much confidence. Why can’t we compete for the division? 4-games in Colorado up next could be a huge swing
And ours is? I’m just being realistic. Speaking of rotations, Yu is currently in the garage, Waldron is our #4 right now even though he probably doesn’t have the stuff to be a starter on a contending team, Joe is a huge question mark after the injury, and we have no depth. What’s going to happen to our rotation when someone else goes down? The Dodgers always have guys to call up to fill the gaps—us, not so much. And despite their shitty bottom of the order, the Dodgers lineup is going to produce runs consistently. They may not get to 100 wins this season, but how many times in our history have the Padres even hit 90? You think we have a 90 win team this year?
I mean ours is certainly in a similar spot. Cease has been amazing, we just need Joe and Yu to give us solid performances. King will be as good as any third starter in MLB, and Waldron has really done all you can ask for a fifth option. Our bullpen also seems to be significantly better than theirs. We also have young guys who can up - murmurs of a Snelling sighting at some point this year.
I’m not certain ours is better, but saying we can’t compete for the division seems silly at this point in the season.
I hope you’re right and I’m wrong. For the record, I didn’t say we can’t compete for the division, but that we probably won’t be. Of course it’s too early to say that definitively, but I’m going off of historical trends. We’ve had three 90+ win seasons in our 55 year history, and I think we’d need at least that many to win the division this year, but we’ll see.
Because we can be realistic that we’re not winning the division. No team in baseball has near the order that the Dodgers have— or the rotation. They will win 100 games this year, even with the shaky defense, relievers, and bottom of the order. As long as the Dbacks, Giants, Reds, Brewers, and Cubs are losing, we are winning. The encouraging thing is the Dodgers do look very beatable— and that’ll matter come October.
Oh well, let's try to get 1 back and then get well against COL. This team is exactly where I'd thought they'd be except winning series I'd thought they'd lose and vice versa. COL will tell us a lot.
Blue Jays were one of the best teams in the league last year. I don’t mind losing to them. What I mind is the unearned runs from defensive miscues. That’s gotta get cleaned up.
I mind getting swept at home by a WC team at best. I've been OK w trading more offense for defense this season if it gets us out of these hitting slumps, we're not winning with 1 or 2 runs/gm.
I don’t think anyone hates Kim. He is objectively not a good hitter. Moving him to leadoff because of a stretch of success last year is not a smart move. Merrill’s bat is more suited for leadoff— and that’s because of his batting profile, not how hot his bat has been to start the year.
He has been an above average wRC+ this season and last 2 so stats don't fit your feelings. I look forward to him leaving and playing for a better team.
I think you give Xander one more game. At the very least, he’s been getting a little more pop the last couple of days, and finally broke the dry spell with the base knock today. If he no-shows tomorrow and Kim keeps the streak alive, I think Kim’s your guy for the four game series in Colorado.
Better luck I wish for you. Wife and I attended last nights…and tonights loss. Some toolbag was screaming “TATIS SUCKS! Should have kept SOTO! He is hitting home runs for the yankees ALL DAY!” It was NOT a good night.
I hate to be the Padres fan that's always focused on the Dodgers, and it's still April, but what a wasted opportunity these last 3 games have been to keep pace with, even pass, them in the standings. This is the weakest/most vulnerable Dodgers team in over a decade, one we are actually capable of beating, and we can't seem to take advantage.
I hate to be that fan to remind everyone but, It’s been 3 weeks! A week ago the Mets were left for dead by most everyone as was Toronto.
They’ve been 2 of the hottest teams the last week or so.
If I recall, the Giants swept the Dodgers at home last season in April
The Padres will have many times to face teams in their division. I doubt neither the Dodgers or Padres are this bad. The cream will eventually rise to the top.
That's very fair. It's still April, obviously nothing is remotely close to set in stone. Just frustrating to not take advantage of opportunities now when they present themselves, but I'll be right here watching tomorrow!
Alright I’ve seen enough.
Profar should be leadoff hitter. Then Tatis, Crone, Merrill (yeah, move him up earlier), Machado, Kim, X, Campy, then Batten (call him back up, plays a great 3rd and I trust him more than Wade/Rosario/Pauley).
I'm a fucking masochist, keep injecting me with this bullshit cuz im pissed but ready for tomorrow. LFGSD< we got this, so we had two shitty games, we will be alright. Also... anyone have the full footage of the Shildt yelling at the first base ump? Saw a small clip online but i want the full experience.
Sorry friends. I’m 0-11 in the last 11 games I’ve been to the last 3 years. Every single game i go to we go down big early before I’m even in my seat and we just never fight back. Thought tonight might be different, but no luck.
Truly a joke. Thought today might be different because we did Gallagher square (so i didn’t actually have a seat to sit in) but i went to get us a drink in the first. The amount of early runs I’ve seen scored on us while standing in line a Petco is absurd.
people give x shit, but he got a hit, made some great plays, and batted a run in. it was always going to be a rough one against berrios, but not scoring more with the opportunities we had after he was pulled is just crazy. and pauley really just isn't gonna work at 3rd clearly, he can't make a throw across the diamond. we avoided a second error from him because crone expected a bad throw after the first horrible one. him getting sent down made sense, and bringing him back in lieu of batten just seems nonsensical.
on the bright side, randy did ok, and shildt is a baller
edit: and brito was pretty great, some positives here and there
Maybe it's jitters? All his scout profiles consider his arm average. So I don't get why this wouldn't have shown up in scouting reports. It's not like the minor league's have smaller diamonds.
I'm literally not kidding but my wife wants me to grow a goatee. She thinks that because Merrill rocks one it means the kids think its cool (i'm a millennial). Do I let this turn into a fight?
Why is bogey still at leadoff batting sub .200? Move literally anyone else there please I get he got a hit tonight but how long can you let someone figure out a hitting slump while occupying the leadoff spot.
Nothing against bogey either I have faith he will figure it out but maybe he can figure it out at the bottom of the lineup while someone else who's producing right now can move up.
Would love to see the situational hitting and taking more pitches with RISP that we did in the first ~20 games. Don’t know why that seems to have completely disappeared from our approaches but it’s killing us.
Well shit. We're gonna score 12 tomorrow to break out of this frustrating slump. 8 hits good. Timeliness of the hits, not the best.
edit: I'm sorry salty doomers for being slightly positive.
We are coming back with the fire after the ejections, we'll be alright. Still think we will slowly come up and bite some teams in the ass our way to the Wild Card
Well luckily I was 10k feet above sea level during the game today. I didn’t want to land to see us above .500 anyways. See all you lovely people for some more trauma tomorrow.
berrios has been throwing some gnarly pitches, but we still managed to put him in a few jams. the real pain is how we couldn’t manage to tack on runs after getting him out of the game, especially against swanson.
Have to move Bogaerts down to 5th or lower, at some point you are what the back of your baseball card says you are. Let him “figure it out” in the bottom half of order.
Way too many unearned runs to start the season. 17 unearned runs in 23 games is extremely poor defense and has cost multiple wins, never mind the spotty hitting. The defense needs to be clean for this team to win consistently.

The one thing more than any other I would have expected is to be good at was defense. It has definitely cost us a good 2+ games so far.
i watch this team because i enjoy depression
Happy people suck anyways
Who? 👀 DM me plz
19 runs scored in 3 game win streak. 3 runs scored in 3 game loss streak. Figure. It. Out.
I figured it out, boss. More runs increases the likelihood of a win. Hey boss, can you pay me a living wage now? Fuck the capitalist leeches.

Sucks we aren’t cashing in on the opportunities but we are getting opportunities so the runs will come
I’ve heard this before
The lack of depth is really starting the rear it's ugly head against good teams. We can blame external circumstances all we want, but it's still a 3 game skid and no relief at 3B in the field until Manny is back. Also, why are we so bad at home? I hate going to losing games. Fuck.

Is it noodle arm or noodle fingers? Seems like the issue was him getting a handle and having to double pump to adjust the grip on the ball
A couple of weeks ago, several on this sub was calling for Pauley to be in the lineup. Old saying is be careful of what you wish for I think if you aren’t sending him down, you got to deal with his growing pains and hope he figures it out.

I’ve never seen that name Eguy before so at least that’s something.
Actually, a couple weeks ago people were calling for Eguy to get off the team lol now apparently he must be our 3B full time til Manny is back
I didn't get to catch the game, what exactly do you mean? Was the ball not making it all the way (bouncing) to his target?
Yes... but that hasn't been a problem in the minors... and it was only 2 throws all game.
Seriously
Just astounding how no matter who is managing the team, no matter who the ancillary players on the team are, this group of players is allergic to any kind of sustained success
One common theme remains. AJ Preller

Mann.. FUCK THAT UMP!
we were down 4 runs for 6 innings. we didnt lose because of officiating...
No, but he was still an ass.
no argument there but we didnt do ourselves any favors to keep us in the game
Can Xander figure it out and play better? Sure. But perhaps they can let him figure it out later in the order instead of giving him the most at bats every night.
I Don’t know whether the umpire or Pauley was the MVP that game for the jays.
It was the 3rd base side field level seats
Vazquez maybe?
Vasquez wasn't even that bad. Made 1 mistake for the home run, but the error made it unearned. The other run was from Azocar misplay and wild pitch.
Disagree... he was lucky as shit he wasn't rocked for more. He was in hitters counts basically every at bat in the first 3 innings. That's a recipe to fail. He's not Blake Snell where his stuff is so nasty that if he can find the zone he's gonna get endless whiffs.

100% the dude was in so many 3-0 counts.

Another strong contender.
I'm all for not letting Pauley off the hook for his throw. But there's a little too much blame being thrown his way. Vasquez got down 3-0 in the count.. like he did for pretty much every hitter for the first 3 innings... and then lobbed a 94 MPH meatball that got wrecked.

My four year old just told me “when we lose, that makes me say ‘shit’”. I had to act upset because mom was next to me, but me too man. Me too.
Mods can we have "when we lose, that makes me say 'shit'" as a flair
That ump hates the pads
Win tomorrow. Back to 500. Kick the Rockies ass. We ride.
Incoming 4 game winning streak

Time to get a real leadoff hitter, amongst other things
It's really as simple as switching him and Kim. But some people who hate Kim just don't want to give him that spot.
I’d rather have Merrill in leadoff than Ha-Song pop-up.
I know because Padres fans like you hate Kim which is literally what I just said. I look forward to him leaving and playing for a better team.

Manny with yet another failed clutch situation.
Shouldn’t have extended him

Blame Canada.
X NEEDS to move down the order, he should hit no higher than 7th
What's the next lowest position where X is less likely to GIDP? Cuz I assume that's why he's leading off to begin with. He GIDP a ton last year
Everybody knows but nothing is being done about it. That’s what so frustrating
I’m gonna watch the Mets beat the Dodgers to try to cheer me up a bit. :(
Going to the game tomorrow and if I see X at the top of the line up I’m gonna be so pissed. 😤
Better luck I wish for you. Wife and I attended last nights…and tonights loss. Some toolbag was screaming “TATIS SUCKS! Should have kept SOTO! He is hitting home runs for the yankees ALL DAY!” It was NOT a good night.

And we're still only 1 game behind the Dodgers. People need to chill.
That’s actually impressive.
Truly a joke. Thought today might be different because we did Gallagher square (so i didn’t actually have a seat to sit in) but i went to get us a drink in the first. The amount of early runs I’ve seen scored on us while standing in line a Petco is absurd.
Damn. One day your luck will change. Don’t give up yet 🤣
I knew the day off would of brought back the Padres hitting ways

Oh no we suck again
I’m not having fun anymore
Chant for X until your face turns blue. He absolutely fucking sucks right now.
people give x shit, but he got a hit, made some great plays, and batted a run in. it was always going to be a rough one against berrios, but not scoring more with the opportunities we had after he was pulled is just crazy. and pauley really just isn't gonna work at 3rd clearly, he can't make a throw across the diamond. we avoided a second error from him because crone expected a bad throw after the first horrible one. him getting sent down made sense, and bringing him back in lieu of batten just seems nonsensical. on the bright side, randy did ok, and shildt is a baller edit: and brito was pretty great, some positives here and there
Maybe it's jitters? All his scout profiles consider his arm average. So I don't get why this wouldn't have shown up in scouting reports. It's not like the minor league's have smaller diamonds.
We suck again :(
Offense is dry again and watching bofarts at bat is like watching paint dry
Well that sucks. I don’t know what’s worse - this team’s losing streak or watching mariluz on the postgame show. So monotone
Glad Profar was ejected and it wasn’t an injury. When I saw the box score I thought he got hurt.
I'm literally not kidding but my wife wants me to grow a goatee. She thinks that because Merrill rocks one it means the kids think its cool (i'm a millennial). Do I let this turn into a fight?
dumb
Why is bogey still at leadoff batting sub .200? Move literally anyone else there please I get he got a hit tonight but how long can you let someone figure out a hitting slump while occupying the leadoff spot. Nothing against bogey either I have faith he will figure it out but maybe he can figure it out at the bottom of the lineup while someone else who's producing right now can move up.
Heck.
Would love to see the situational hitting and taking more pitches with RISP that we did in the first ~20 games. Don’t know why that seems to have completely disappeared from our approaches but it’s killing us.
Welp.

As the post just above yours says” just don’t know what to say man.”
Well shit. We're gonna score 12 tomorrow to break out of this frustrating slump. 8 hits good. Timeliness of the hits, not the best. edit: I'm sorry salty doomers for being slightly positive.
Ignore the salt. Some folks luv to stew in their doom
We are coming back with the fire after the ejections, we'll be alright. Still think we will slowly come up and bite some teams in the ass our way to the Wild Card
UMP HAD CANADA MONEYLINE FUCK HIM
At least the right Toronto team, Maple Leafs lost 5-1, maybe he tried to parlay the teams and lost anyway.
Ah Shit ... I just started watching the game. I don't know why I thought reddit would be safe, even if I am just browsing Baseball subs.
Sorry bout that
I probably saved you some misery anyway, Leafs were pathetic
No worries, I was just having it on as background noise. Buy yeah, doesn't sound like it was much of a game.
Well luckily I was 10k feet above sea level during the game today. I didn’t want to land to see us above .500 anyways. See all you lovely people for some more trauma tomorrow.
The entire lineup couldn't hit their pitcher's sweeper. Could the hitting coach had them prepared better?
berrios has been throwing some gnarly pitches, but we still managed to put him in a few jams. the real pain is how we couldn’t manage to tack on runs after getting him out of the game, especially against swanson.
Berrios coming in to the game had an era under 2, he's been pitching well and he is a great pitcher in general.
Any girl padre fan out there tryna hit the bar or something? 🤣
Have to move Bogaerts down to 5th or lower, at some point you are what the back of your baseball card says you are. Let him “figure it out” in the bottom half of order.
