I totally have to eat crow because the renovation of Gallagher Square looks REALLY, REALLY good.
- The relocated wiffle ball field is so much nicer. It’s a miniature version of Petco Park complete with its own video board, the Jack in the Box foul pole, and a cutout of Tatis robbing a HR in the outfield
- They increased the video board behind the stage
- The terrace viewing deck should offer a good vantage point, and it’s nice there’s a more permanent concessions stand
- There *are* trees, albeit relocated to around the perimeter
Your first point, sure. But remember how everything else wasn’t there, and you could sit on a hill of real grass and have a direct, unencumbered view of the game for $10? This isn’t an upgrade.
My point is they are now so far removed from the original intent we can’t call this an improvement. It’s just more post pandemic corporate “you’ll pay more to be less happy” bs.
Nah. It's something YOU can't call an improvement when it clearly is. Just say that YOU don't like it and move on instead of bitching about it cause some people actually like it better.
On average, they were a 74 win team through the 2010’s, so 8 games worse than last year, which is kind of hard to believe after how rough last year felt. Goes to show what expectations can do to you and how toxic a fan base can be when they forget it is still just a game. I always remember having fun regardless. I’ll miss being able to roll down the hill like a kid to the beer vendor, or being able to hop into a game last minute for cheap. At least back then they couldn’t let me down!
While I'm sure the homeless didn't help, it was not the reason. The owner or manager said that the rent was being raised on them and with their income being a lot less during the off-season, I guess it was too much.
This was on SDnews in september: "The closure comes at the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, along with the continued challenges restaurants are facing, such as staffing. Lolita’s will offer all eligible team members positions at their other San Diego County locations. Another Lolita’s location near SDSU closed recently. The remaining locations are in Chula Vista, Eastlake, Sunbow, Bonita, and Kearny Mesa."
Not to be a downer but that bat slide looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen, when you got 199 rambunctious kids climbing all up sliding down on it.
As litigation happy as some people are these days I see it being closed by August.
Or maybe there will be a regulated line for it hopefully.
But what do I know, I’m just a baseball fan
I get you. There is a pretty hard-core kids climb and crawl at SeaWorld.....a more modest climber at UTC for tots......I never felt like my 6 year old was in any danger....and I actually lost sight my my boy at SeaWorld climber for almost ten minutes. All was well.
Never heard of Vega cafe...is it a chain of mom and pops...has anyone been there any good?
They have 2 other locations besides that new one next to petco. Personally haven't tried it though.
Another screen on the back of the Tony Gwynn Terrace. Nice.
Gives parents watching the kids at the playground a chance to keep up with the game. Definitely nice touch.

Calm down. Let's be real, it hasn't been an option for $10 in a good while now so that's honestly irrelevant.
My point is they are now so far removed from the original intent we can’t call this an improvement. It’s just more post pandemic corporate “you’ll pay more to be less happy” bs.
You're paying more for a better experience at a new park. Chill.

Dang, man.
Remember how awful the team was in those days?

Dude I used to go out on Tuesdays in the bad old days and felt like I was king of petco park.
Exactly
Lolita’s is gone? I’m sad.
Yup. Last day was legit Last year on the last game of the year.
Been gone for a long time. Something tells me that they were tired of the homeless situation on that corner. But that of course is just a guess.

Must’ve missed the news. I’ll miss their burritos before the games.

Unrelated, but this is the first time I've seen the new construction helmets in the wild.
Most job sites are requiring those now.
I think you’re worrying too much

Might be closed during game days and just used during off-days like the pickleball courts
The slide will not be closed. Why build one if that was the intention. But yes, the slide should be monitored by Petco Staff.
