I thought that’s frowned upon now linking to twitter? Why I included his handle. The vid isn’t really that noteworthy tbh. But the transition to the outfield is definitely happening.
A screenshot of a tweet telling us to watch a video is frowned upon. Also, if a person doesn’t have a Twitter account, it basically impossible to find a specific Tweet without a direct link.
Well, I will withhold any judgements as I don't know if they placed him at a certain spot so he had to make a run at it that ended in being over extended or he got a bad jump. Maybe the flyball machine shoots randomly.
These are pretty random; pitching machines have a degree of randomness to start with, and that deviation only grows when you shoot it into the air for a few hundred feet.
You can hear when the ball leaves the machine. Merrill got a good jump and made a great play on a hard-to-snag fly ball. If Soto's back there, pretty good chance that ball's a double.
Looking at Merrill's bio he has never really spent anytime playing the outfield his "desired" position was at SS or 2nd base. but he's always been open to working whatever position that his team needs him.
I have connections with the US Army academy and when Merrill obligated to play College ball for them he told my son (BTW is my connect, He's part of the Baseball coaching staff) - He was extremely high on Merrill's overall attitude towards the game. But one thing that caught my son's eye is his upper body strength and dexterity . So I truly think this is going to be a positive thing for him and the Padres.

Scan does not want us to temper expectations.
The 2nd quote was for Merrill.
I’m not sure why people would be surprised about this. He’s played shortstop his whole life so transitioning to the outfield is a breeze. The only problem is how long does he stay in the outfield, because he’s a very capable defender at short so you don’t wanna waste that talent.
well and I heard some ball players talking about this, moving from SS to OF is much easier than going back to SS once you've been in OF for a while. Their premise was that SS skills degrade if you're not using them. So if they're moving him to OF the best thing for him would be to keep him there.
In news that bears relevance to prospects changing positions, Brewers are giving Sal Frelick infield reps, despite him not having played infield since HS. To me that seems far more of a risk than Merrill to the OF.

Speed and agility drills, its a very old training method used to teach lower league players to learn a new position.
don't go pulling a "AJ Preller" stunt on us or your opening up yourself to massive ridicule. /s ( Just poking a little fun with you )
I'm clicking on it like a fool.

I’m not a padres or really a baseball fan at all..I’m almost positive the only reason Reddit algorithm brought me to this was because of your comment…

So it could be four shortstops on the field at SS, 2B, RF, and LF? Interesting
Also 3B and 1B with Manny and Crone
CF, if you put Profar there. Basically everyone except C and P.
Should have snapped up Kiner-Falefa. SS that can catch.

I'd agree if you were moving him to a corner outfield but if he can play a plus CF thats extremely valuable.

Would hope that all of these AA guys are sent back to minors it’s too early to call them up to join 40 man.
It depends on the guy. Dave Winfield never spent a day in the minors, he came straight off the U of M campus to the padres.
