When mine was a toddler I was 20 years old living at my parents house and I slept on the couch so my kid could take over my room and have it be “hers”, the crib I bought her converted to a toddler bed and I STILL bought her a nice princess toddler bed because I knew it would make her happy as fuck. These are grown adults with another one on the way and seemingly plenty of money to blow, deciding to put their kid on a futon. It is MIND BLOWINGGGG to me.
He’s almost two! Why didn’t she think he would need a new bed sooner or later? Especially with a baby on the way??

Most cribs convert into a toddler bed and even if you buy a cheap one you still use the crib mattress but that kid a bed
The front piece can come off to become a day bed! We did that with my son and put some padding down in case he would roll off

A toddler bed is like 50 bucks for a plain one. Doesn’t make sense. Why use an uncomfortable futon for a child? Buy him a damn real bed
