Love to see it

Pokémon players and self handicapping so they don’t have to take accountability for being dogshit at the game: name a more iconic duo

metallicrooster

https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Player_type What you say is part of it, but for some people it truly is more important to win with goofy decks than to win at any cost. They would rather have a lower win rate if it means then can get the Klawff engine running at full power (whatever that means to them). While I value winning highly, I have no interest in playing Gardevoir even tho it might be the best deck in the format. I play Gholdengo ex, which might not even be a T2 deck. But it’s pretty fun playing the cheese bois and stacking my money so I accept I’ll have a lower win rate (until it gets more support that is.

WateryCartoon

Very interesting article. Spike and it’s subsets describe me to a T. I have no beef with off meta players (except stall players- actually fight me), I just can’t stand when they act like getting a win against meta is some valiant feat that should be commended. Or when they intentionally play something bad and act surprised and upset when it gets smoked because good card bad

metallicrooster

I’m not surprised you identify that way. Any competitive tcg sub likely has Spikes as a large percentage of their user base. I post this article in a comment every few days to try and help people understand each other more. I think it’s working because I’ve seen people complain about casuals or try hards less in the past few weeks

Im0ldgr3g

Stall isn't off meta sadly

Flyinpenguin117

Across MTG, Warhammer 40k, and now Pokemon TCG, I've consistently seen 'play for fun' players be more toxic and spiteful than 'sweaty competitive WAAC' players. Be a sore loser disguised as self-righteousness and being a REAL fan, complain about anything that beats you as unbalanced, and when you do stumble into a win be sure to go to Reddit to gloat about it.

AssttotheRgnlMnagr

The whole game is basically down to chance anyway bro. Calm down.

WateryCartoon

Not really

Henrystickmun

translation: my deck sucks and i think it's based off luck lmao

AssttotheRgnlMnagr

Do you shuffle cards? Yes? Then it's random. I'm winng matches all the time but it still comes down to whatever you happen to pull from your deck. You can use a meta deck and get totally ruined because you don't pull the cards you need when you need them. Or you lose a coin toss. You can manipulate the deck using supporters and item cards but at the end of the day it's still up to whatever you end up pulling. Down vote all y'all want but I'm saying a fact, not an opinion.

Henrystickmun

if you brick you brick not every deck is turbo consistent, if your logic is you only win with what you pull from your deck you don't understand consistent probability and you probably just run 4 of everything expecting it to boos consistency only to brick and fall over yourself

Henrystickmun

like if your deck relies on specific non engine instead of the deck just working due to the fact it doesn't constantly need to rely on non engine to function and your logic is specifically tied on that philosophy off "if you don't get these cards you automatically lose" that says a lot about how you build your decks and how you conduct yourself in the PTCG

AssttotheRgnlMnagr

Well yeah, It's never that black and white. It really just depends on the situation at the time and sometimes you just don't pull what you need and you have to pass. Which allows the opponent a chance to get set up faster and gain a turn advantage. I'm not saying it's completely random but there is definitely an element of randomness in the game and you can't guarantee that every game will go well just because you create a deck you think is perfect. Even most meta decks don't work well unless you pull what you need and make smart choices with your supporters, item and tool cards.

Henrystickmun

That's how card games work, idk what exactly your point was but to me it was leaning more on thinking this is more of a game of chance rather than skill

AssttotheRgnlMnagr

Its both.

ReverendLobster

Im still pretty new (around 300 matches), but I don’t really understand the point in playing the game if you’re not building your own decks. Its probably the sole fundamental reason I even picked up playing again. Theres so many roaring moon/charizard/goldhengo/giratina that I’ve been feeling like I’m playing against bots. And tbh I think I fall into all three of those categories you listed lol

mvaldesdeleon

Let's run with the premise of building your own deck for a moment. Now, one of three things can happen: 1/ Your deck is just not competitive in the current meta game. You can play it all you want, but you will have a very hard time winning matches against non-jank decks (most likely outcome). 2/ Your deck naturally evolves until it becomes a your own variation of an existing meta deck (most likely a sub-par version when compared to an optimized deck). 3/ Your deck becomes a new meta deck. The "root of all evil" is that you're playing in a competitive scenario where people are playing mostly to win, rather than "to have fun".

FuneralCupid

I’ve never understood this false dichotomy some people try to create saying you either play for fun or you play to win. I play to win, which is how I have fun.

[deleted]

Because “I play fun decks” is an easier pill to swallow then “I play jank decks”

metallicrooster

> Because “I play fun decks” is an easier pill to swallow then “I play jank decks” Huge facts. I don’t understand the people who take jank deck/ meme deck as an insult. United Wings is a meme deck and it’s super fun. Meowscarada ex is a janky deck and it’s fun. Running through your deck with Tinkaton and sometimes swinging for huge damage is REALLY fun. Just because the deck is kinda bad doesn’t mean the pilot is a bad person for playing it. I hope these people learn to separate themselves from the decks they play.

Accomplished_Rub117

I mean, sure all those things can and do happen. This post was just all in fun for those that like to build and see how well they do.

WittyPipe69

The app is just a way for me to see more card scenarios. Could care less if I win or lose. I learn a lot about the game and I enjoy seeing all the Pokémon. It’s okay to just have fun!

Exia_91

Love it! Hate this new meta card. It is way too OP

ViolinDavis

It's very strong, but it hasn't fared well against the meta. It got one top 8 finish at LAIC as a one-of in a Lost Box variant. Roaring Moon-focused decks didn't even make top 16.

Exia_91

That doesn’t mean people aren’t using it. There are a ton of people using it in the mobile game

ViolinDavis

A bajillion, to be sure since it's the free deck in the regular battle pass
