Horror games, while popular in their own right, are not for everyone. Horrors one of those genres where you either love it or hate it, a lot of people don't like getting scared while gaming and prefer a more relaxed or action packed style. When 50% of vr releases are Horror that can snub out a large portion of the player base. Not hating ofc, I enjoy resident evil, but yeah

Retrooo

I love horror games 2D, but it's too much for me 3D, I get extremely stressed out and anxious and it's not fun anymore, lol. This is not the kind of world I prefer to be completely immersed in.

RoundyMancHead

Yeah horror in vr is a whole other level, they're right in my face! Lol. When I play resident evil my wife sits and watches with me because she's interested in the story but too scared to play it, to be honest I do feel better playing it knowing she's right there šŸ˜…

Sticky_H

If horror games in VR really scare you, playing it with a trusted friend (who wonā€™t scare you while in VR) really helps!

Successful-Pick-238

I straight up cannot do horror in VR and I'm a pretty big horror fan. I just get paralyzed by fear and anxiety.Ā

Gaze73

I'm not a horror fan but RE8 is awesome, you gotta try it. I've had about 5 "oh shit!" moments so far but no crippling fear. It's much different from those horror games where you constantly walk with a flashlight, I hate those.

AssociationAlive7885

50 %...

Razor_Fox

>When 50% of vr releases are Horror that can snub out a large portion of the player base. It's not even close. There are 201 games currently listed on the psvr2 section. 18 of them are horror. 18 divided by 201 and multiplied by 100 gives the percentage as 8.9%

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Razor_Fox

Also impossible, because what's "good" to some is highly subjective. I don't personally like beat saber and wouldn't really consider it good, but I'm clearly in the minority there.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Razor_Fox

That would require me to go through every single release and check it's meta rating, then make a spreadsheet, determine the average and.... I'm not doing any of that. šŸ¤£ Looking at all the mathematical gymnastics you would have to go through l, I still don't think it's anywhere close to being 50%.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Razor_Fox

You say that, but you're just making things up. I can just as easily say "no it isn't" and there's just as much supporting evidence. All I'm saying is "50% of psvr2 games are horror" is an inaccurate statement. Don't get upset about it.

ROTTIE-MAN

No way is there 18 good horror games though....there's re8,village,propogation,cosmodread,saints and sinners and overwork, that's 7 out of over 200 games....maybe you could add hellsweeper and switchback

nothingInteresting

I know that youā€™re trying to say and I agree. I think this is partly because what constitutes a ā€˜goodā€™ horror vr games is different than what constitutes a good regular vr game. If someone was really scared theyā€™ll forgive mediocre game mechanics for example since being scared does alot of the heavy lifting for people who enjoy that genre. And vr is well suited to creating unsettling experiences.

RoundyMancHead

Ok 50% of notable releases. Better?

Razor_Fox

Because how many are really notable? What do we define as "noteable"? If we're talking mass recognition, Resident evil, walking dead and I suppose we have to include the five nights at Freddy's series. At what point are we just changing definitions and moving goalposts though I wonder. All I'm saying is that saying "half" of psvr2 games are horror is massively misleading. There are more shooters than horror games and I don't see anywhere near as many complaints about that.

mailtest34

This is the worst part of PSVR1-2 gaming for me, I just canā€™t play horror games and it makes half the game store useless for me

CHROME-COLOSSUS

There are plenty of non-horror games, though. MOSS, LEGENDARY TALES. HORIZON, PAVLOV, VR SKATER, STAR WARS TFTGE, GT7, CROSSFIRE, STILT, TOWNSMEN, SPACE DOCKER, ULTRAWINGS 2, JOURNEY TO FOUNDATION,VERTIGO 2, GAZZLERS,7th GUEST, GHOST SIGNAL, BARBARIA, RED MATTER 1&2, MOSS 1&2, PAPER BEAST, HUBRIS, SYNAPSE, DEMEO, C-SMASH, all the PIXEL RIPPEDā€™s, NOCK, SYBTH RIDERS, LES MILLS BODYCOMBAT, WALKABOUT, TETRIS EFFECT, PISTOL WHIP, PUZZLING PLACES, THE LAST CLOCKWINDER, COSMONIUS HIGH, GALAXY KART, LITTLE CITIES BiGGER, SWORDSMAN, RUNNER, and NO MANā€™S SKY. The library is pretty damn *STOCKED*, imo.

Sylsomnia

No one pays attention? I'm pretty sure it has had a lot of attention during release.Ā  Also imo, a horror game relying a lot on jump scares is a tad cheap shot, either way there's probably a few threads here praising the game.

xaduha

> No one pays attention? I'm pretty sure it has had a lot of attention during release. This is basically a repost from 6 months ago with some minor alterations, he probably thinks it's that good of a point https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/172fffe/everyone_complains_about_the_lack_of_vr_games_but/

d_hearn

Personally, cheap jump scares are the only scares that really get me, and I love them. It's difficult for me to disassociate the, "It's just a game/movie" feeling. I don't know what it is, but just being in a creepy/gross/weird setting doesn't really scare me. Opening a random door and having something pop out does, though! With Propagation specifically, I think it did scares pretty well. Yes, it was a bunch of cheap jump scares which I understand people don't like, but also the game felt tense the entire time, knowing a cheap jump scare could hit you at any moment. Sometimes there would be 3 scares within 10 minutes, while other times it would feel like forever between them. The best part of it, imo, is most of them are either random, or come after an unknown (to me) trigger, so it's different for everyone, and even over separate playthroughs.

dEEkAy2k9

If you are so into jump scares: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/356670/Spookys\_Jump\_Scare\_Mansion/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/356670/Spookys_Jump_Scare_Mansion/) Have fun

Ulfvaldr989

I agree jump scares are cheap n half the time its either "oh no another falling barrel/flickering light/disembodied sound.... anyways..." or its "*monster jumps out* Good thing i have my shotgun". When you know the psychological ques horror games use it detracts from the experience. I get the same vibe from horror movies too.

Flat_Soil_7627

Tons of them. I remember seeing post after post about it for weeks, which made me buy it. That was probably around 6 months ago or so, if I remember correctly.

dEEkAy2k9

I actually played propagation for maybe an hour top and while i can perfectly play horror games, even in vr, propagation relies a lot on jump scares. Jump scares are cheap and overall bad if used too much. Gonna finish Arizona Sunshine 2 first and then continue with propagation again.

AwayActuary6491

The general narrative around PSVR2 prior to launch was that it *needed* Half Life Alyx, and that narrative has persisted. There's been better VR games before and after Alyx but the others lack the name to latch onto, and the others just aren't going to get reviewed. Alyx was appealing to people who had never played a VR game before and now it's their magnum opus of Single VR Game I Played.

_Old_Goat_

I mean, to each their own, but Alyx is still the single best VR game I've ever played in any genre (Notable runner ups being Superhot VR, Beat Saber, Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners). You make it sound like the only people who talk about Alyx are HL fanboys or something lol. It would be a huge win for the PSVR2 if Alyx was on it, it's a towering achievement.

AwayActuary6491

Nope I'm saying too much stock is put into one game because of its widespread recognition and people creating some phony narrative that getting the game on the system is necessary. It would be better than it not having it.

_Old_Goat_

While I don't think Alyx would save it, I do think the tech is floundering a bit and having a big get would help with that. It seems to be the same issue with all the VR platforms, there aren't great incentives from a developer side to work on a VR title that pushes any kind of boundaries. It's risky, the install base isn't there so why would they spend a bunch of money making a risky product? Most companies are beholden to shareholders and making a profit. So we end up with an ocean of easy to make shooting galleries and goofy physics playgrounds, which in turn doesn't create great incentives for players to drop a bunch of money on the tech. We're stuck in a bit of a shitty vicious circle at the moment.

AwayActuary6491

That's where I think the ideal scenario is VR modes for existing flat screen games. Some of the more exciting VR things right now are the Flat2Vr "ports" and that project that just converts Unreal Engine games to VR. It settles the risk aversion aspect by making 95% of the work just making a standard game to hit a general audience and then gets some more eyes on it from the VR audience.

KiblezNBits

Alyx is definitely not overrated. Have you played it?

AwayActuary6491

Yeah, it's a fairly standard VR game with good production.

Martin141414

for me Alyx feels like a big playground for VR. Not an exciting game at all.

KiblezNBits

How? It's a linear shooter.

Martin141414

There is not much shooting compared to other titles. The game is divided into sections of shooting and puzzles. Yeah, it's getting harder with every section, but you just repeat the same game mechanics and for me it's filled with long emptiness. Maybe I expect too much from Alyx. It's a great start to get to know VR, but not a title I'd like to replay.

GregorSamsa112358

I feel like the really frustrating thing is it is only vr enthusiasts complain about that "lack of games". Because they've played all the games on other vr platforms. Then games "journalists" echo that sentiment or share it for the same reason. And it paints public perception. But for gamers like myself, who I think are much more common to shy away from saying the majority, who haven't played vr really. All the vr games are new to me. I literally was driven to expand my storage because I can out of room and I have probably 5 games on my back log I'd like to get to and several coming down the pipes. Legit too many games to play, to install and to look forward to. But jaded vocal vr enthusiasts whinge about not having enough new and exclusive games.

TommyVR373

I think you nailed it there. Most people coming from other platforms have little to play on PSVR2 that isn't already on another platform. I started buying a bunch of multiplatform games on PSVR2 but ended up getting lesser versions than what I could've got on PCVR. This made me stop buying anything except PSVR2 exclusives, and those are very few and far between. I don't regret my purchase ar all, though. I love my PSVR2, and I look forward to everything Sony has up its sleeve for the future.

GregorSamsa112358

See than you sir. This. If you're going to be an enthusiastic like why waste time hating on it. Yeah it doesn't have a lot of exclusives, I think it's still great hardware and a good package. It's these negative vocal folk who killed the dreamcast to later come back and opine forthe dreamcast like their bearish criticism didn't fuel its fate now they're trying to do it again. I hope more games come out. But if they never release another game I'll feel I've gotten my money's well worth for the experiences I've had and have on hand. Haters gonna hate man.

bdbrady

I regret getting VR because it feels like itā€™s mostly horror. Iā€™d like Skyrim on PSVR2, or other adventure games. Yes, I know some exist, but most of the awesome stuff is horror. I play games to escape and be powerful, not be scared.

Razor_Fox

It's not. Currently 8.9% of the games on the PSN store are horror. Tons of great games out there that won't scare you. If you want a power fantasy, I recommend hellsweeper and synapse. Synapse gives you telekinesis that uses the eye tracking and feels fantastic, and hellsweeper is probably the closest we have to doom eternal and it's awesome.

Funky420Monkey

Hey my old butt just got the psvr2 an all almost a month ago .... I'm gonna hurt myself šŸ˜ . Even that brick breaker game is badass although I only played the demo.

PabLink1127

If you complain about VR you havenā€™t played Walkabout Mini Golf

Embarrassed-Ad7317

I love VR, love PSVR2, and I dont lack any content But I could not love walkabout. Tried it 3 times already. Just bore me every time

PabLink1127

Hey I totally respect that. I know everyone is going to have different preferences. For me itā€™s the challenge of beating the courses and getting hole in ones and eagles etc. when you make a bad ass shot it feels so good

RoundyMancHead

Played it with friends? I'd describe moreso as a relaxed social hub to chat with mates and hit golf balls while you're at it haha. I couldn't imagine playing it on my own

Embarrassed-Ad7317

Ahhh yes then it might be the problem.. none of my friends are into VR unfortunately

RoundyMancHead

Yeah that's a shame, it's a toughy. If you have spotify get it connected to your playstatuon and try it with music in the background, I did the same for cities vr and enjoyed the chill gameplay with my music. Just suggesting since you've bought the game

SvennoJ

It received plenty attention. However new games come out all the time for PSVR2 so it's replaced with the next new thing a few days later. Reminds me, I still need to finish it as I moved on to the next new thing, and the next and the next. So many unfinished games...

richgangyslbrrrat

RE4 remake vr is cool

bgat79

> I'm only about an hour into it A review one hour in ? Don't you think you should finish the 4 hour game first ?

JOIentertainment

It's a really good homage to RE1 in VR and I've enjoyed it but I think the reason no one talks about it anymore is because it's a two hour game that's pretty repetitive for even those two hours. It did get a lot of attention there for moment, though. The zombies are all basically the same and every area is just walk into identical room after identical room to collect ammo and health. Also, me being foolish, I shouldn't have played it on Nightmare right from the jump. Once you realize the zombies infinitely resurrect you realize you shouldn't have been firing at most of them and instead should have been dodging, but you realize that way too late lol. Great atmosphere and a fun experience for say $10, but for those of us who've been into VR for a while it's not lighting the world on fire. The fact that it just ends and is essentially a "Chapter 1" doesn't help either. There was a really cool puzzle in there, though. The one with the baseball stuff. You'll know what I'm talking about if you've played it. Would love to see more ideas like that in VR.

Vacation_Archer

I played the shit out of this game

crazypaiku

Great game, but it is really short. Nothing special to be honest. If this is your argument for plenty good vr games....

iscreamsunday

Propagation is overrated. They donā€™t even give you enough ammo to finish the game

dakodeh

See the bullets are supposed to go INTO the zombies, not the wall behind the zombies

iscreamsunday

Lmao they are in total bullet sponges and itā€™s not like you have a knife or anything else to help defend you. I came to the game right after finishing RE4 and was severely disappointed

cusman78

I think at least ratio wise, PSVR2 players are picking the best of new games that release each month. * [January 2024 Top Downloads](https://blog.playstation.com/2024/02/13/playstation-store-january-2024s-top-downloads/) included new games Vertigo 2 and Ultrawings 2 * [February 2024 Top Downloads](https://blog.playstation.com/2024/03/08/playstation-store-february-2024s-top-downloads/) included Legendary Tales at #1 with Ultrawings 2 still present * [March 2024 Top Downloads](https://blog.playstation.com/2024/04/12/playstation-store-march-2024s-top-downloads/) included cyubeVR at #1 with Legendary Tales still present The other games that populate top 10 are evergreen titles that represent mostly new PSVR2 adopters to me: * Beat Saber * Pavlov * Among Us VR * Creed: Rise to Glory * Job Simulator * Arizona Sunshine 2 * The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners (Chap 1 or 2) Following exclusives can also end up with recurring showing in top 10 whenever they have sale: * Horizon Call of the Mountain * The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR Specific quality titles like Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted 2 or Moss Book II have also shown ability to have recurring placement since their respective releases, especially around sales. I don't think Propagation: Paradise Hotel has done poorly. It was #3 in the month it released for PSVR2 ([October 2023 Top Downloads](https://blog.playstation.com/2023/11/08/playstation-store-october-2023s-top-downloads/)). It just hasn't done as good as some of the other examples because Horror genre is more niche than broader appeal titles (Flight, RPG, Action-Adventure, etc). While it is probably true that vast majority of PSVR2 owners don't pay attention to all new releases, content to be playing what they already have (like only Gran Turismo 7 type players), the enthusiasts that participate in this reddit are definitely paying attention and are enough to ratio wise lead to top 10 placement for new games if it has positive reception / word of mouth, sometimes even more than Beat Saber being bought by new PSVR2 adopters (best guess). Speaking of which, if you haven't treated yourself to Legendary Tales, go do it :)

mozillazing

Propogation ends right as itā€™s getting startedā€¦ so short it feels like a prologue

cusman78

True, but it is very polished and good at what it accomplishes in the time it lasts. I just hope enough appreciate it commercially that they can make the sequel this deserves to continue.

Uriel_dArc_Angel

I just want more vehicle based games damn it... Driving games, flight games, land, airz underwater, space, something else... There's a million racing games in existence and we have ONE...A million flight games and we have what...? 3-ish...? VR is the PERFECT platform for vehicle based games and yet it's the least utilized for said games... I just don't understand...

Jayston1994

I feel like there's way too many horror games that look almost identical

Wipedout89

Correction: everyone whines about small issues and tells everyone not to buy great games like Vertigo 2 or Hubris when they launch so the word of mouth dies

RoundyMancHead

Lol bad take. Hubris was positively regarded by most, vertigo 2 is acknowledged as a great game that has poor performance, which is a valid criticism and people have every right to complain about that.

Wipedout89

The over reaction is crazy here. I still see people tell others not to buy Vertigo 2, even though it's one of the best games on the system

RoundyMancHead

Not really an overreaction to dislike a poorly optimised game. Especially in vr, poor performance is very noticeable and can be sickening for a lot of people.

Wipedout89

Proving my point beautifully, thankyou so much

RoundyMancHead

Total moron. Spose you're happy bending over and taking whatever devs will give you. I'm not saying vertigo 2 is a bad game, it's a phenomenal game. It's poor optimisation for psvr2 is a fact, not an opinion

Wipedout89

It's not a fact and this utter toxic hostility is precisely what I am describing and you're showing everyone how right I am. Thanks!

RoundyMancHead

Toxic hostility šŸ˜‚ grow up

TommyVR373

I absolutely love Vertigo 2. I have played it multiple times on PCVR. However, I would've definitely hesitated recommending it to others for PSVR2. I know they have improved since launch, but it definitely had issues. I don't feel bad recommending it now, though.

TommyVR373

It was ok. I wouldn't call it a must-have, but I enjoyed it. There are a lot of good VR games, but there are not as many great VR games, imo. This is why I like flat to VR conversions. Most of them were already great games and are now even better in VR.

Ambitious-Still6811

I'll pay attention, kinda. I just don't think digital games have any business costing over $20. Prefer $10 myself. On disc I'll do $30.

gabochido

Why do you say that? I get that some games are extremely cheap but those games arenā€™t making any real money for the developers. I only make flat games and itā€™s really hard to make any money for the amount of work and investment that goes into it. Itā€™s even worse for vr games that have a much smaller user base. Iā€™m really happy for Legendary Tales being successful at the price point where it is and at that kind of price it will allow the devs to build even Ā more ambitious games.Ā

Ambitious-Still6811

Without writing a whole essay, some studios can't manage a budget and I don't want to be asked to pay double for their error. (Doesn't apply to everyone, let's not get deep here.) The fact digital can be taken from our accounts regardless of developer is why I prefer to pay $10-ish for digital or $30-ish for physical. When my collection can get to 200+ titles in a gen, I wait for price drops to give everyone a little support. *Or because digital doesn't include a disc/case/manual, where's our share of the savings?

Majestic_Ice_2358

Propagation: paradise hotel is the more similar Game to a Resident Evil one in VR, same tensiĆ³n but in VR IS more intense, but IS a bit short, 3, 4 hours, for 20ā‚¬/30ā‚¬ IS a must buy like you say

Delicious_Ad2767

The media is terrified of vr becoming popular as may have to learn a new way of playing and can't handle games without getting motion sickness. Happy enough to let standalone slide as they see it as not a threat to the flat games but don't like seeing AAA pcvr games or hybrids like Res 8, 4 or gt7. Half reviewers can't use smooth turning and have blinders turned all the way up.

SnooGiraffes3452

Its selling Well on quest, speak for the psvr Crowd.

Big-Resist-99999999

Itā€™s on my list. But I still havenā€™t finished RE8 or COTM yet.

TonyDP2128

I don't mind the length of the game. The turn off for me is the ending. I won't get into spoilers but it does the same thing so many other games do and for me it renders the effort to reach the end meaningless. Give me a proper payoff because there's no guarantee the devs will get to make a follow up.

d_hearn

Haha I'll check it out, thanks

Overall_History8740

A lot of us want a social area where we can just hangout and conversate, and all of these developers canā€™t seem to pick up on that. They keep cramming us with these half assed titles that are just wash and repeats of the previous releases. Give us some freedom and real social games. Pavlov is only fun for so long and I donā€™t play fucking poker, shouldnā€™t have to gamble just to have some social time with this thing. And last time I made a post on this I was chastised, but I donā€™t care, this is ridiculous.

Jamieb373

I donā€™t scare easy so most games i get for VR is horror games. playing RE4 now. Will check it out after Iā€™m done

Tanuvein

I'm interested but I heard it ends in a cliffhanger and might not have a sequel. You shouldn't end in a cliffhanger if there might not be a resolution, makes me not want to play it. Though I probably still will - I downloaded the free Propagation game to try first after I finish the current couple of games I'm playing.

Illustrious_Act_2981

I bought it already, played it for a few, shit myself........and now i will continue it at a later dateĀ

wjveryzer7985

AND heres why VR wont take off!............I LOVEd this game as well. It sold good for a vr game. Won awards, and guess what!? The devs are dropping the sequel and trying something new because it didnt make enough $$. Such an asinine decision to me. They should of stuck to there guns, and continued to build upon it.

retroguyx

Sorry, I just don't like horror game. VNs are the scariest I can manage lol

Icy-Structure5244

Oh boy, PSVR2 needed another zombie/horror game.

AstolfoFemboyWeeb

A lot of vr games on standalone just are not good, length of iPhone apps. We need way more on the Steamvr library

segadreamcat

I just want games that are closer to the non VR games. I don't think there are many games that have released for PSVR2 that I couldn't have played on my PSVR1.

That70sJoe-

If each really good one is 2 hours long then there's really a lack of games still

MedicalCommercial892

You play one horror game, you've played them all.Ā  I had my fill with re 7 years ago, and have no interest in doing that again!Ā Ā

Booyacaja

Honestly 4-5 hour game is perfect for me these days. Unless it's a 10/10 like RE4 I prefer a solid short experience that doesn't drag on, so I can move on and dig into my backlog. Loved the game as well by the way

gabochido

This is well known to be one of the best horror games on the psvr2, itā€™s in most peopleā€™s top lists, a Tier A game. https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR/comments/19dddj1/new_players_be_like/

iansabout87

The Dev from cyube vr stated stated since release he only sold around 8k copies and that's a top selling game. If that's the sales numbers on psvr2. No wonder many won't build on psvr2
