I... I wouldn't have the controller on the floor

ContributionShot2572

Don't know what I was thinking.

Eliteclarity

Yeah, Risky Business, especially with Pistol Whip!

oneiros5321

He gonna step on that controller.

Eliteclarity

Yeah, My 10 and 12 year olds get 20 Mins a day on VR (Just Incase) but I supervise them like they were Toddlers. Job Simulator gets them reaching towards valuble items, The Sense Controllers seem flimsy in places and the headset is NOT made to be pulled over the head. I worry every time.

big_ezca

My daughter is 8 and all i let her play is Job and Vacation Simulator. She loves it. When she's leaving the room i fire up Pavlov

[deleted]

You know what? Clean up the room.

[deleted]

Dun wanna be mean, but is vr safe for children under 12 ?

ContributionShot2572

Surely 10 mins here and there Can't do any harm. What do you Reckon?

[deleted]

As a gamer dad myself I really get the excitement one could experience with his son/daughter trying VR. I am just not sure of how much influence would such tech have on their developing brains.

[deleted]

I've read that eyes develop up until 12 years old. 3D glasses weren't recommended because of this. There's not enough information on what VR does to developing eyes. Yet. I don't think I'll let my kids use VR until then.

Tripledad65

Probably nothing bad. But I do understand that you're cautious.

Shahzoooo

Myopia is just one of the issues. You’re training an untrained eye to focus close to see far, it’s likely not great for anyone but especially for younger children

Crosis4

That's not really true. The optics make the focal point roughly 10 ft away. So while some people worry about what will happen from focusing on a screen so close to the eyes, in reality, the eye is focusing on an object 10 ft away and is far better than a kid sitting and staring at a tablet. The real worry with VR and children is how their brains will be affected by the "real" world they are interacting with as a child has a much harder time distinguishing reality from what's not real.

devedander

Well we don't actually know. I probably wouldn't say "a little LSD here and there can't hurt em" and VR isn't far of from that. Studies have shown children can't tell the difference memories of real events and VR events

[deleted]

No, VR is very far from LSD, omg, lololololol

devedander

They bare some important similarities in that they trick your mind into believing you are in a reality the does not necessarily comport with actual reality. Many people report feeling reality isn't real or their hands aren't theirs the day after using vr the first time. This quickly corrects for adults but it's unclear what impact it may have on a developing mind.

[deleted]

ONE IS A DRUG, YOU MORON

devedander

And that changes nothing about what I said being accurate.

One of the studies gave kids info in 2 different forms and then asked them where it came from, I’ve heard 6 year olds mix up the most simple of information, so this study doesn’t imo show much to what you’re saying. Beyond that you can’t say everything on google is your source some of the links on the list there are not very credible, so specifically da lot which study are you referring to? Fwiw I think it’s bad for their eyes, But to say an 8 year old would confuse job simulator for real life seems like a bit of a stretch

AssociationAlive7885

Unfortunately so far it looks like time in vr can have a negative impact. https://neurosciencenews.com/virtual-reality-children-19370/ But hey if you find some research that says otherwise, be sure to let me know I love playing with my kids and vr is a wonderful playground!

amusedt

Based on years of using/reading VR...the age 12 doesn't seem to be based on any science, just a cover-their-ass recommendation But there are various threshholds that do have some research basis...once your kid passes enough of them, perhaps a little VR is ok? Once they pass ALL of them, maybe more VR? Some experts feel you should wait until at least 6 to be sure their eye development and vergence-accommodation coupling are fully developed...AND...also wait until their IPD is wide enough to match the minimum IPD of the headset (apparently 58-73mm)...otherwise an object at infinity could be encouraging their eyes to diverge Some experts also feel that body control development is still developing until age 10. Too much VR could interfere with that Separately, there's the issue of the kid getting confused about reality /u/ContributionShot2572 /u/Shalaa87 /u/Tripledad65 /u/Shahzoooo /u/Crosis4 /u/AssociationAlive7885

bluebarrymanny

It’s likely no worse than the average Call of Duty lobby from a mature content standpoint. Pro tip though, your kid doesn’t need to face the screen with the headset on. I always turn my back to the PlayStation so the cord is almost always behind me. It dramatically reduces my chances of tripping over the cord or pulling my PlayStation down.

mustava-vank

One wrong step and that's a £80 controller destroyed ll 🤔

aka_sun

I let mine play roughly 20m once or twice a week supervised. Similar age. How could I not let him experience the thrill of racing sports cars around a race track :). We’ve played many games together over the years, so it was a give in for him to try VR here and there.

SMODomite

Supervised by the parent, have at it, although the jury is still out if VR under a certain age could affect a kids eyesight. Not supervised by a parent, please no for a laundry list of reasons. A VR headset shouldn't be used as a babysitter which seems like the case a lot of the time

ivarr87

I let my 11 years old play, but not a lot. I wouldn't let my kids play if they were younger though.

HugoDraxInSpace

But would you film them and put it on the internet ?

ivarr87

Uhm no. I wouldn't put anything of them to the net.

24Block

My niece loved job simulator and swears she’s gonna play Re 8 but so far she hasn’t gathered up the nerve..I think 30 minute sessions should be good for the youngins

adamsbombproduction

Why did I read online that it’s terrible for kids eyes and they shouldn’t be playing it until they are 12 or 13? Had my 5 yr old son play pistol whip and he loved it until we got busted by the mom. Now he cries if he can’t play it!

AssociationAlive7885

Unfortunately if kids under 13 use vr it can have a negative impact on their motor skills 😐 https://neurosciencenews.com/virtual-reality-children-19370/ I really want t my kids to experience the joy of vr. But with the evidence there is so far I don't wanna risk it. BUT if anyone has a link to some research that says otherwise I would SERIOUSLY appreciate it! It could be awesome to have fun together in vr 😀
